Wizards and Warriors animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Middle-Earth - Lord of the Rings universe continues with a video on the aftermath of the formation and destruction of the Fellowship of the Ring and the first battle of Osgiliath ( • War of the Ring Begins... ), the battles of the Fords of Isen ( • Battles of the Fords o... ) and the battle of Helm's Deep ( • Battle of Helm's Deep ... ). At 12:22 on the contrary! Denethor ordered Imrahil's sortie. Gandalf suggests the plan and Denethor responds with "...as to the sortie, I had already given thought to it. Let us go down...." and already had the Gondorian horsemen ready to go. Denethor DID however tell Imrahil they couldn't send troops as far as Cair Andros.
Agreed. The omitting of the Dol Amroth knights with the Grey Company severly diminished Aragorn's return to Gondor. I can see why the change in Denethor was made though, more like a slow decline into madness rather than a mental break at the first shock. It made the further actions of Denethor trying to burn Faramir even more devastating to the overall character and less like a coward's shriek.
@@shrubby-ov4yw I have to say I disagree, the grey company really didn't add too much in terms of interesting characters, if anything I'd say Aragorn's arc was better in the films (in the sense that he actually had an arc).
I would've loved to have seen the Knights of Dol Amroth, but it would've made the film much too long. You can't introduce only *one* of Gondor's Fiefs, and doing the fief's would've definitely made the film really drag. That being said though, I don't think their omission robbed the film of much development. From the perspective of the plot and character development, both the company and the knights were extraneous.
@@AeneasGemini thats fine disagree. The true genius of Gondor lay in its fiefs. Thats what made Aragorn's return such a game changer. They also only had his healing hands in the deleted scenes/extended edition which also removed a lot of the mystic from the event. So not even including a passing remark about them did the whole arc a great disservice. I saw somewhere someone remarking about Frodo never going to Osgiliath so that's at least 20mins of screen time that was not needed. You could have had Aragorn proceeding into the paths of the dead and we only see their recruiting of the Dead Army and the rallying of the Pelagir garrison with the Grey Company in a well set out flashback as Aragorn sails into the Anduin with the corsair fleet
12:21 sounds like the opposite of what happened - Denethor was the one who ordered the charge, and it came just at the right time to hit the forces of Mordor as they were disordered in their pursuit of Faramir's forces - and it was recalled in time before it'd get caught up in more enemy forces moving onto the Pelennor. Denethor was very much mischaracterised in the Jackson movies, as an incompetent and spiteful antagonist instead of a great, but proud man with a tragic end. From Book V, Chapter 4:
The retreat became a rout. Already men were breaking away, flying wild
and witless here and there, flinging away their weapons, crying out in fear,
falling to the ground.
And then a trumpet rang from the Citadel, and Denethor at last released
the sortie. Drawn up within the shadow of the Gate and under the looming
walls outside they had waited for his signal: all the mounted men that were
left in the City.
[...]
The out-companies with a great cheer turned and smote their pursuers.
Hunters became the hunted. The retreat became an onslaught. The field was
strewn with stricken orcs and men, and a reek arose of torches cast away,
sputtering out in swirling smoke. The cavalry rode on.
But Denethor did not permit them to go far. Though the enemy was
checked, and for the moment driven back, great forces were flowing in from
the East. Again the trumpet rang, sounding the retreat. The cavalry of Gondor
halted. Behind their screen the out-companies re-formed. Now steadily they
came marching back. They reached the Gate of the City and entered, stepping
proudly[...]
Overall, Denethor was a capable ruler with a strong Numenorean strain, almost equal to Aragorn in many regards. His fault was not trusting in Gandalf, and by extension disliking Faramir who was close to the wizard. Using the Palantir, while giving him useful information, cost Denethor a lot of his strength and let Sauron chip away at his hope and will until the (apparent) death of his only son left broke him. But up until Denethor thought Faramir had been slain, Denethor had led a competent defense of Gondor for 35 years and ordered a sensible fighting retreat when Sauron suddenly decided to take Minas Tirith. If it wasn't for everything he did, Gondor might well have been in a worse spot when the War of the Ring began.

The part about the low numbers the various outlying fiefs were able to send to the city reminds me of the peak of the Roman Empire when Trajan was able to muster like 200,000 legionaries for the invasion of Dacia, as compared to after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, when in the battles to retake Italy from the Goths Belisarius was typically only able to muster a few thousand men, and then his elite household Bucellarii troops had to "carry" the army like the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth. Like Imrahil jested in ROTK, the entire army of free folk that issued forth after the Pelennor Fields to challenge Mordor was scarce larger than the vanguard of one of Gondor's armies in its glory days.
Tolkien may have meant it that way. He was an academic, and probably read his fair share of history. Its interesting, because the books hint that it was a lack of strong leadership, not people that made it harder for gondor to mobilize large armies. Hence why sauron attacked so soon.
Gondor had much inspiration from the Roman Empire, and Minas Tirith is described as an Eastern Roman City
Now plenty of people already mentioned that Denethor was the one who ordered the sortie, but you also seem to imply that the 30 odd Dunedain of the Grey Company was all that was left of the Northern Realm. That isn't the case, as the Grey Company was simply the men that Halbarad could muster quickly and were the more elite of the Rangers of the North.

I have been in many discussions about the topic. And there were multiple angles from, where one could analyse how high the dunedain population was.
The Rangers seem to be the warrior class of the population and are scattered all over Eriador with some concentrations around bree and the shire. However depending on how you would interpret gathered in Haste. Halbarads company could consist of 1-10% of the rangers. Meaning their could be a few hundred to maybe 3000. Going with somewhere around the middle of let's say a bit less than a thousand.
We now have to decide how many of the population were actually rangers. But since we are talking about dunedain perhaps we have to alter the statistics.
Let' say around 50% of all Males between 20 and 90 were Rangers. That would make up around maybe 30%-40% Percent of males.
Going with the higher number, that would mean 2500 Males.
However, not counting children and possibly a higher percentage of population being women.
We know there is a settlement in the angle or settlements around the angle.
So let's say around 4000 (50% women and children)+1500 males with other occupations)live in the angle with 1000 patroling Eriador.
That would give us a scattered 5000 dunedain in really large Area of Eriador as a conservative estimation.
Depending on your interpretation of their population mix and development you can probably give a range of a population from barely a few hundred to a bit more than 10000.
This is honestly so well made. This whole LOTR lore series is just amazing. I enjoy watching LOTR related content quite a bit however this is a fresh new outlook on it. Thank you

Denethor was a competent leader who was able to wrest control of the Palantir from Sauron, and held imrahil back until the right moment, when he ordered him to charge (they made it sound like imrahil disobeyed order to save faramir) Denethor wasnt trying to get faramir killed, he was putting faramir into great danger in order to buy time and protect the city
the rangers shot the boats as they crossed, that should probably have been shown

Perfect timing. I am finally getting around to reading the trilogy after watching the movies umpteen times. Just read the portion of The Return of the King describing this battle and the siege of Gondor.
Faramir plated a major role in defending Osgiliath, as well as Gandalf and Imrahil.
Its rediculous that his father sent him out there to fight despite the odds then lose his mind after he realized his stupidity.
Minas Anor/Tirith was designed so an invading force would need to zigzag throughout the city to reach the upper levels. Plenty of time for defenders to unleash volleys of arrows or use siege engines while the opposing forces had to cross the entirety of the structure for each level. Brilliant

a) Sauron is NOT a lidless eye wreathed in flame, all indications are that he had an actual physical body but kept secluded until he could reclaim the Ring
b) Pippin's encounter with Sauron took place on the way back, while they were camped on dry land.
c) By the time the Grey Company joined up with Aragorn and Theoden, Gandalf and Pippin were already on their way
d) Imrahil's sortie was actually sanctioned by Denethor.
Sauron's physical form was destroyed in the Fall of Numenor, but over the centuries, he was able to reform it but lost the ability to appear fair and beautiful to anyone. The lidless Eye was his symbol.
The Grey company were the most battle hardened 31 rangers that Halbarad could muster quickly to go along with Elladan and Elrohir to join his chieftan. There were other Dunedian but they could not be assembled so quickly because there were so few of them and they were spread out. Most likely, these rangers came from the outskirts of the Shire, Bree and the Angle of Menethiel.

The Gondorians were well aware that the Rammas was not a effective defense against a host of that size.
It served more as a place for the garrisons of Osgiliath and Cair Andros to rally, bleed the enemy and evacuate their wounded.
Carts and members of the House of Healing stood ready for the latter.

Osgiliath is a place of ruins and a city of ghosts.
They do Faramir a little dirty in the movies. He only hesitates for a second before denying the One Ring when he realizes it's within his grasp. He actually laughs in relief and tells Frodo how he could see that the temptation would be too great for his brother. He doesnt take Frodo prisoner or anything like they showed in the movies.
I wonder what will happen next? I am totally rooting for Mordor, the Witch King of Angmar is a badass. Definitely can't be killed by any man.

Please cover the failed Invasion of Klendathu! I don't think it's really covered in the novel and the movie probably doesn't have a ton of concrete details, so it opens up room for a lot of creativity I'd say!
Ah valiant Faramir. One of my favourite characters in the series. He should have been in the fellowship instead of Boromir hence why the dreams to seek out Rivendel kept coming to him but only once to Boromir.
I know others here have said it before but I wish Jackson included the Grey Company, the Fiefdom’s troops - in particular the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth - and the defense of the Rammas Echor.
Another well done Middle-Earth video, the defense of Osgiliath and the Rammas Echor are basically similar in that Gondorian forces are overwhelmed by Mordor and its Haradrim allies but this is all a prelude to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. For that battle it would be best for a detailed breakdown of all the armies involved as well as their leaders.
This is just great. A combination of two of my favorite things. Fantasy warfare, and historical map animating mirroring the Kings and Generals style.
CZcams might be a cesspool of awful content. But it’s stuff like this that shines through it, and makes the whole platform worth it.

The battle of Farthen Dur (Eragon)
The Grey Company was "all that could be gathered in haste." So there definitely could've been more than 30 Dunedain left.
Also I agree with Ruuddevil, I can't forget how Peter Jackson made Gondorian soldiers complete cannon fodder. Those are some of the best armed, armored, trained, and disciplined soldiers in Gondor. So in reality, perhaps 2-3 orcs at least should have died per Gondor soldier. And in truth that would have meant there would've been many more orca as well.
I've watched hours worth of lore videos by now while the actual LOTR audiobook sits on my audible account. I need to find more time in the day, man.
None of that is a substitute for reading a book and forming your own opinions. Even on the less esoteric details, you will find these "lore videos" are totally off the mark, uninformed, or have a completely different impression and perspective from yourself. If you want to understand the story, start by reading the book 😄

That being said Andy Serkis' reading of the books on audible is fantastic, especially the Tom Bombadil chapters, and you should get on that

Nope nope, I intensely disliked that portrayal of Denethor that comes from P. Jackson’s movies.
Seriously in the books, Denethor’s « madness » is depression, not lunacy. And he is the strategist of Gondor, no one else, and ultimately his defense in depths strategy is successful.
Sending the civilians away and rationing the garrison = = preparing for a siege. Calling for renforcement from the fiefs and Rohan, sending his best captain Fatamir to contest Mordor armies and try to gain time for allies to arrive, something that all his captains disagreed showing their lack of strategic vision here.
And he did not just send him in anger over the hobbits and the ring.
When Faramir came back, Denethor actually asks how Faramir is. It is only because Faramir is trying to bullshit Denethor instead of owning up to his decisions that has Denethor getting angry.
The cavalry charge, also Denethor’s decision, he just waited for the enemy formations to be disorganized the end result : Mordor’s vanguard destroyed. And he also had them retreat before being overextended.
Denethor in the books is supposed to serve as a rival to Aragorn and show the greatness of the west, as well as their main weakness : their pride. And how faith allows one to succeed : Denethor, with his depression, failed / Aragorn kept faith, it allowed him to win over his fears and doubts.

Very good and intriguingly brilliant gem of a video. As it is great to see Faramir finally getting the well deserved praise that he should have got in cannon from his father for brilliantly fighting an epic defence and rear-guard action in Osgiliath and across the Rammas Echor. Buying precious time for Gondor to reinforce its capital's defences for the coming siege and for its ally'sforces and armies to gather before proceeding to the relief of Minas Tirith, just in time thanks to the time bought by Faramir's sacrifice and the city's defenders solid defence.

The grey company, as far ad I recall, was not composed of the remaining Dunedain. It was composed how however many dunedain could assemble in time to join the company. We don't know exactly how many rangers there were, but considering their deeds at keeping Eriador safe I think we can assume it was quite a bit more than just the grey company

Saruman was not Sauron's servant. Saruman was a temporary ally and both planned on betraying each other the moment the free peoples were conquered.
This is just a summary of events that are covered much more excitingly in another video by this little known creator P Jackson. It's actually a three part video series- i would highly recommend!
Fyi, he gives a slightly different account of these events which some people find contentious. Some accuse Jackson of unfairly portraying Denethor in a bad light, for example. Another being that Jackson recounts Saruman being KILLED and hurled from the tower, instead of imprisoned while the palantir is hurled down.
I appreciate both sources, but just think people should be made aware of its different takes before they look up that video series.

Tolkien never really went into great detail on Gondor's defences during the War of the Ring and for pacing reasons could not allow Mordor's forces to get bogged down. As for myself, I would have planted cheval de frise, as well as, caltrops in the shallows of the Anduin River and along the River embankments (or old quays) in depth on the Western side of Osgiliath. Several buildings among the ruins of Osgiliath could have been used as strongpoints linked by way of the ancient city sewers to funnel Mordorean forces into choke points. Turning Osgiliath's outer wall defences to face inward would have forced Mordorean forces to lay siege within the city itself. The biggest problem Gondorians faced was the fear that the Witchking and Nazgul brought with them. Gandalf should have gone with Faramir to Osgiliath. I wish Tolkien had added details of Osgiliath's defences in Unfinished Tales.

@@jasperdegraaf5254 I looked at it from the perspective that Gondor had around 4500 years of military engineering experience dating back to the Numerorean Imperialism days to draw on. Tolkien sped up the battle for pacing reasons. The Faramir defence in Peter Jackson's movies makes absolutely no sense and only shows that Gondorian soldiers were like the Red shirted Security Guards in the original Star Trek TV series.

It always seemed to me that, at least as far as Gondor and Mordor were concerned, he tried to make an alternate version of what happened between the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Turks.
Even chronologically, as hundreds of years before, Sauron's forces occupied Mordor, just as the Seljuk Turks occupied Anatolia.
Gondor almost lost its royal lineage, while after the fourth crusade, the Byzantine empire fragmented into several kingdoms (the "empire" of Nicaea, the Despotate of Epirus, the Kingdom of Trebizond, in which the original heirs ruled until 1471) . I could also add the fact that after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire saw a slow but steady decline, with few exceptions (Justinian, Basil II and the occasional ruler of the Macedonian dynasty).
Gondor is, at the time of the video, in a similar situation to the Byzantine empire around 1453 (aside from the fact that Gondor still has quite a bit of its land); its structures are only reminiscences of the past, the population is very small, as well as the troops. They desperately need outside help (in the case of the Byzantine Empire they received only scant help from the odd Italian city-state). The elite troops of the Byzantine Empire were their cataphracts, coincidentally the Swan Knights of Gondor are their elite.
During the siege of Constantinople, in 1453, a lunar eclipse occurred, of course, this event is far inferior to the magical power of Sauron.

1. Denethor was not controlled by sauron through the palantir, and Gandalf didnt even know Denethor had one when he first came to Minis Tirith
2. Denethor held back Prince Imrahil until just the right moment, he planned for him to ride out, he didnt forbid it like you implied
3. Sauron wished to rule as king of men, not replace them with orcs

Watching these videos make me remember all the small but meaningfull things they decided to leave out the films (and in some cases the stupid things they decided to add) and it makes me sad to know the LotR trilogy could have been a lot better.
