The traditional Basque tune is associated with Sabine Baring-Gould’s colorful translation of the carol recounting the Annunciation of Mary from Luke 1:26-38. In this “pensive” SATB a cappella setting with moments of soprano divisi, MacDonald also includes “Ave Maria” and “Magnificat anima mea Dominum” in the accompanying voices.
