- I went out to have some fun while trying to show off how capable a cyclocross or gravel bike is when you point it downhill or ride more technical terrain. Join me as I ride up and down Sidewinder and Forest Grove trails that are both located on the west side of Burnaby Mountain. Burnaby Mountain (SFU) is located in Burnaby, BC, Canada and about a 25 minute drive from downtown Vancouver.
Learn what to expect on the trail, what bike to bring and how to navigate around the mountain.

Why did CZcams wait a whole year and a gravel bike purchase to show me this video? It shows the essence of what a gravel bike is made for so well! It took me so many reviews etc to understand what gravel bikes are good for. This one single video could have saved me many hours in front of the screen!
Haha! Hope you're enjoying your new bike :)
Beautiful scenery, great footage!
Great stuff Matt. Looking forward to riding with you in Squamish.
“It doesn’t matter what two wheels you have, just get out there and enjoy the ride.”
Hell yea man
Absolutely!
thanks for the ride 🚲
Great trails and footage, Subed
Thanks very much!
Good ride.
Yes it was!
This video is perfect... I mean it was a great footage the scenery was good so it wasn't boring and you are a great person... I like guys who greet others and be social to the other bikers... I mean there are not many you wish other bikers a "great ride". These are some little things i like.
Greetings from Germany
Thanks very much! Glad you liked it.
@@TrailPOV i didn't liked that video...
I loved it
@@TrailPOV 5 days ago i pre ordered my first gravel bike (cube nuroad race 2021) it will be in the shop where i pre ordered it on 15.september and now i am thinking mhhh is this the perfect bike for me? Or is a hard tail mountainbike better? But this Video showed me yes gravel bikes are really cool.
Thanks bro
I hope you understood everything, as I said, I am german and I am 17. So maybe there are some mistakes xD
Great video!
Thanks!
Great video 👍🏆.
Thanks!
I've never watched another person ride from this viewpoint and enjoyed it until now, very well done and it looks like so much fun! On the edge of getting a gravel bike to commute with, getting too dangerous with my road bike and the gravel can be used in other ways as well, like this for example. Thanks for the video, helps me decide to get a gravel rather than a hard tail XC.
Haha thanks. Enjoy the new ride if you decide to get one!
Defs get a gravel bike. It's the most versatile bike I believe and is a lot of fun
@@mountfairweather thanks for the advice! It's leaning towards that and the ride home today I maintained 35-40km/h on the road for quite some time with a cheapish gravel on the loan to me. I think I would get bored on the road with an MTB even if it's a light XC. I also got some nice trail and rocky downhill on the same ride and must say that although parts were bumby, they were ALOT of fun!
I am almost done building my Lynskey bike... and this is almost my back yard.....(you almost biked to my house... LOL)... look forward to trying this out!! (Probably be going down hill at 1/4 your speed though... LOL)
Awesome. Hopefully the weather stays sunny and bearable for a few more weeks for you
Ha... nice! I rode my commuter down Sidewinder once (had 26" BMX tires on it with barely any tread at all). The upper part was ok, but lower part was utterly haywire... glad they shut it down finally as it turned into a drainage ditch!
Which part did they shut down...Forest Grove area?
@@TrailPOV lower sidewinder
@@bctrailbaggerInteresting.....last time I rode it seemed ridable
@@TrailPOV oops, I meant gearjammer. Lol. Lower Lower Gearjammer on Trailforks
www.trailforks.com/trails/lower-lower-gearjammer/
@@bctrailbagger Ah yes that makes total sense. Yes that lower portion was a generally disaster when they finally closed it.
awesome! i love riding technical terrain on my gravel bike! get some 650b rims and wider tires and it will go even better.
Nice!
Great video , thanks for sharing.
What's your tires size ?
Thanks. I'm running 33mm tires, Schwalbe X-ones
the drops, the drops, THE DROPS!!!! Why won't you use them? Lovely vid, cheers buddy!
The SRAM hoods are much taller than the Shimano ones so I actually enjoy the hoods because it puts your weight a bit further back and allows you to bunny hop the bike much easier without your forearms hitting the bars above.
Good to know gravel is awesome lol flew past them mtb dudes
Love the vid, I’m trying to buy a Brodie Romax Carbon 2X 700. Trying to get outta the house more often, I wish I knew people to go biking with :/
Nice bike. Hope you can find a community of gravel riders to head out with before winter hits!
Great video! What was the name of the trail you started your descent on? Around 3:56?
It's called either Watermain trail or Watermelon Trail according to Trailforks. Happy trails!
Nothing like bombing back mountain bikers ona drop bar bike. This trail woud be so mellow on mt enduro bike but look fwd to hitting it on mt Gravel rig. Amazed Matt rode this all on the hoods. If find my bike much more stable in the drops. Nice work!
You're gonna love it on a gravel bike as long as you have the tire pressure low so you're not skidding 👍
nice vid and love the background music. ill stick to mtb :D
Thanks. Everything with 2 wheels is awesome :)
Question.... Where exactly is the trail after 9:00 in the video? Looks like a great beginner trail for my daughter. Great video btw, looks like a blast!
Probably doesn't have a name. It runs parallel to Shellmont St between Underhill Ave and Greystone Dr
nice!!!!!!!!! I made a custom custom custom CX bike with a Kona Snake frame, a rigid carbon mtb fork, AND......SLX crankset with a 26 and 44 set of rings, in the back I have the tiagra long cage derailleur which can (it does) work with a 11 36 casette. My shift brake set are Tiagra 3x10, and my front derailleur is also SLX, THEN you might ask "how does the front derailleur work with the Tiagra lever? well, after some testing and some failure, I finally made the 3x lever work with the 2x derailleur. The shift displacement from the 3x tiagra going to high mid low is the same as the 2x derailleur, so esentially, the lever is on high position, shift once, only slight displacement to the side, then the next shift to low succeeds in putting the derailleur on the small 26 ring. I tell you I can climb small stairs and some very steep climbs in the hills nearby.
Nice!
Do you happen to have a map for this ride on Strava? Looks like a ton of fun!
I do not unfortunately. You'd have to look on Trailforks to figure out where I went.
Can you think of any trails in Rotorua that would be good/rideable on a CX bike?
Hi Christiaan, certainly the 'Chinese Buffet' trails of chop suey, spring roll and sweet and sour would be doable. Dragons tail is probably CX doable as is 'be rude not to'. All of these trails I have done videos of if you scroll through my collection. Happy trails!
@@TrailPOV Thank you so much! Your channel is immensely helpful for someone new to off-road riding.
@@christiaanjs Hopefully you find offroad as enjoyable as I do! There's definitely a great community of riders.
Model of this bike? 😄
Great tour!
It's a Specialized Crux. Thx.
I'm wondering about the utility of your drop bars, because you are using only a single position throughout this video.
I just enjoy the hoods. Additionally, because you're off the saddle a lot of the time your body is very bent over if you're on the drops.
can you go down gearjammer with this bike next?
That would be a little more challenging!
What bike are you riding?
Specialized Crux with 33mm CX tires
What tires are you running in this video?
A set of Schwalbe X-one Allrounds
@@TrailPOV What size and pressure are they? I run mine at 65-70 psi since I like to do a mix of road and gravel and definitely struggle on any real obstacles on the gravel bits. Even Jims Jungle gives me a hard time if it's wet.
@@PerfectFromNow0n Those wood features on Jim's jungle always get really greasy in the wet. I run 33mm tires at about 30-35psi....mtb pressures.
Thanks, but can you please post a map?
Unfortunately CZcams won't allow me to comment with photos :(
What tires you run?
I've got 33mm Schwalbe X-Ones
@@TrailPOV wow that's awesome , I just upgraded from 35mm to 37mm , sadly I haven't got to test them out that good 😁
would you do the same on a gravel bike?
My CX bike could be considered a gravel bike....so yup :)
Cool video, music just too loud in the mix - but cool video
Thanks!
Anyone else know of other awesome gravel rides in Burnaby?
@@surfingmoose Thx. I had forgot about the trail north of Barnet.
@@TrailPOV Nearly everyone does. Last time rode it was a couple of years ago and it appeared not to have had any maintenance in a while.
I was fearing it would be in disrepair. Good to know.
@@TrailPOV forgot one. The Brunette river from either Burnaby lake or Braid station.
@@surfingmoose The section between Braid and 8-rinks?
Damn I thought I needed an mtb for such trails, I think my Canyon Grail should suffice for the trails near me, with minimal jumps. What tire width are you tunning and which bike is it
Canyon Grail should be all good! I've got a Specialized Crux with 33mm Schwalbe X-Ones
@@TrailPOV thanks man, wife wont let me buy another bike..I guess I should be able to manage with the grail on the single tracks near me east end of Toronto, which seem slightly easier than what you did in the video. We dont have mountains here like in BC sadly. All MTB here is actually just XC or single track.
Why he does not went downstairs? 🤔Didn't he want or the bike is NOT CAPABLE? 😱
The tire has minimal tire pressure for grip and only a CX tire so I'd damage the rim if I went down stairs
Le mec accélère la vidéo. Look at car to 7:33.
For all the downhill portions there is no time acceleration. That road has cars travelling at 80-90km/hr.
Huumm ok, don't be worry.
Mon fils de 3 ans voit très bien une accélération de la vidéo.
click bait. no dh trail. thats a xc trail at best. ive raced tribikes, road, xc, enduro and dh. i know the difference between the trails. also a cx bike is not a gravel bike. all for having fun and mixing it up. but please dont pretend one thing is another
you must be an absolute delight at parties.
