  • Our 1993 Camry with the 2.2L 4cyl 5S-FE motor was having surging issues at low speed during acceleration and would sometimes be hard to start up in cold weather. We isolated the problem to Idle Air Control Valve. But you don't have to replace it, you can clean it!
    Symptoms like this, one might think it could be the ignition, fuel filter or poor starting possibly the battery or starter motor. The idle air control valve is a very easy to over look item that needs attention from time to time.

      Clarence Nash I have this issue now. It happens at a low speed, like when o stop at a light, or slow down. It went off at a light. Also, after it has almost shut the car off after I’ve slowed, when I try to accelerate, the gas peddle feel stuck, like it’s blocked or something. So I keep pressing it slightly, and then suddenly it feels soft again and the car is able to accelerate.

    Another good tip is when you’re cleaning your throttle body, spray into rag…if you spray directly on butterfly, all the carbon buildup will go down in the hole to the IAC valve and clog it up. If this happens, same thing, don’t spray directly into IAC, clean it with q tips soaked in cleaner. I say this from experience😅

    Great video! One important thing to notice is there is a small amount of silicone adhesive between the two thus Toyota considers both the electrical and the mechanical sections as one complete piece. If you continue to have problems at idle, consider adding fresh layer of silicone to the one of the matting surfaces an waiting until it has cured. Best of luck everyone

    And lastly, I think I screwed up the little cylinder on the middle of when you remove the solenoid, I tried moving it left and far right. And now our car idles on cold start at 1,300 and idles at 1,100. -_-

    Live in the UK & own a 1970s Toyota. Different system back then, but with idling issues nontheless. It's an automatic & although not fitted with a rev counter should be at 1500 rpm when starting from cold, then fractionally above 1000 rpm in Park or Neutral, fractionally below 1000 rpm when in gear at full operating temperature in those cases. Instead certain times idle drops to zero when in use warmed up causing it to kill itself stopping at junctions, roundabouts & red lights. Also can tell when it's not right when it runs uneven & lumpy. Would be a good car if idle speed stayed at the mentioned constant level & permanently so.

    Hey Anthony, I don’t know if your still responding to comments but my 97 2.2 I think has a bad iac, now I’ve been chasing my tail forever trying to figure out the problem and I feel these things are connected and I would love your help. So, quite a bit of oil gets in through my pcv and my intake has carbon buildup all over and when I take off it jerks aggressively and then smooths out in the 3,500 rpm range and up. I think it’s iac and I’ve cleaned it. It also only does it when the car has warmed up. I’ve done everything tune up and I would love it if we could maybe exchange messages so I can get some more knowledge about my vehicle because it only has 145,000 miles.

    toyota 4a-fe engine in my 97 prizm. engine boggs when releasing the accelerator, braking/idling at low speeds after accelerating some. seems like that was a similar issue to yours, however i cannot keep my car in park/neutral. it revs up and down constantly. Only when you cold start the car does it idle “normally” for about 45 seconds. Then the engine drops rpms to practically stalling and then starts revving up and down. Do you think this will help with that too? Trying to fix this problem for cheap rather than buy a new IAC Valve. Car was free 🤷🏼‍♂️

    IAC QUESTION; Do you know if the IAC Is responsible for raising the idle speed when you turn the a/c on in an older Camry? I know the computer is involved, but does the IAC do the physical work? My 99 Camry's idle spools up a bit higher, then it settles down to exactly where it was when I press the a/c button to on. What is confusing to me is my previous 98 Corolla maintained a higher idle speed when I pressed the a/c button on to help with the bigger load on the engine. Just not sure if my Camry is supposed to be doing the same thing.

      @chocolate_squiggle Před 3 lety

      Not sure if the MAF might be involved in that issue too, very quick and easy to clean that but needs careful handling (plenty of videos). Be forewarned, I just pulled my whole throttle body out, detached the IAC bit (it's different style to this one - 2002 corolla) and cleaned everything thoroughly with throttle body cleaner, toothbrush, and cotton buds for the small crevices. Runs great now BUT it idled high (just over 2k) when I first started it up again - I knew to potentially expect this so it didn't worry me. It takes a little time for the ECU to re-learn optimal settings. I let it sit idle for few mins in Drive (went to normal), took it for a drive around the block, couple mins blast along the highway, then pulled over and idled some more - it was better already but still a little high so finally I'd read that allowing it to idle with the AC/Fan running could help. I turned the headlights on as well. All this puts a little extra load on the motor (by way of A/C and alternator pulleys) and I guess requires the ECU to use the IAC to make further idle adjustments. I saw the idle drift downwards during 4-5 mins sitting with these things on. Once I got home few mins later it was idling great at just under 800rpm. You don't have to, but but watch some videos if you do decide to pull everything apart, there are some small coolant lines that go to the IAC to help it stay warm and so you need to be prepared to plug them up as you disconnect them (old spark plugs are good). It's not a difficult job if you know what to expect but each car is different and some things were mounted differently than I'd seen in US corolla videos, so it's just time consuming if you're inexperienced. But totally doable if you have some basic tools and prepared to work methodically. Take care not to damage old stuck coolant hoses etc. If you only have a couple hours just try cleaning it like this first. Good luck.

      Not sure, if you pick up a service manual like Haynes, it should tell you.

    My 98 rav4 is idling in gear at about 550 and the thing shakes like crazy. No codes. Data seeeeems okay from a layman's look other than low rpm. Think IAC? I hate to do a parts cannon on it.

      I'd also check for vacuum leaks. It's older so vacuum lines can crack over time. Also check the PCV valve.
