The Mustang Family / War Thunder
Vložit
- čas přidán 15. 08. 2024
- The story of the Mustang family started in 1940. That’s when the British Purchasing Commission approached North American Aviation to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under license. But North American Aviation came with a counter proposal: to develop a completely new aircraft for the RAF… within four months.
The plan wasn’t without risks, but the Commission decided to take it… and won big time. The British had a habit of giving aircraft proper names; this one is now known as the Mustang.

I had the incredible opportunity to fly in a P-51D named “Rebel” at the young age of 14 in the skies over Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It was the best hour of my life. Even as we taxied out, the Mustang just seemed to want to just jump straight up into the air. The fighter just seemed to come to life the second the rubber left the pavement. We formed up with and flew in formation with three other Mustangs, and we just danced in the skies. The roaring Merlin soon faded into the background as I watched with eager eyes as the horizon flipped over to green over blue as we did a barrel roll. Then flight lead wagged his wings. I asked my pilot what that meant, and he’s just told me to hang on! I watched as the two Mustangs suddenly snapped hard left, and then I realized what was about to happen. I braced as Rebel quickly rotated 90 degrees then pulled into a 4 G turn. My guts went into my feet as I fought to keep my head up. After doing a full 360, my body felt much lighter when she finally leveled out. Far too quickly, we were back on solid ground. I watched from my little jump seat as the four bladed prop slowly wound down as the Merlin powered off. My knees were still shaking as I stumbled out of the cockpit. All I could think about for weeks, no, months after that was just the feeling of soaring through the heavens in that magnificent plane. It is a moment I will never forget, and one that will never be topped until the moment I’m behind the controls and bringing a Mustang into the air myself!
Now imagine what a 109 would feel like

my son plays war thunder and says "it flies like an angel with 6 50 cal guns"
Yeah hes right. It flies really good.
Your son knows a good plane when he sees it.
I’m 11 and my parents would say the same
1. The P-51's wing profile allowed airflow to remain laminar for a greater length of the wing chord than most of the other contemporary wing profiles. This did make it efficient, but there's no such thing as a "non-laminar flow" and "laminar flow" wing design - it's a proportional difference between airflow separating at, say, 50% chord length or at 60% chord length. At which point it's called "laminar" or not is largely arbitrary. And the wing being classified as "laminar flow" was not really that significant for making the Mustang what it was. It played a part, yes, but a fairly minor one.
2. The radiator producing a small amount of thrust is called the Meredith effect and it was not by any means unique to the P-51. The Bf 109, Spitfire, Hurricane, Yak-1/3 and Yak-7/9 aircraft used it, to name but a few.
3. The P-51B/C model was just as important as the P-51D. The engine swap from Allison to Packard Merlin engine happened with the P-51B/C models, which was produced with two different cockpit models: A "birdcage" canopy, and a "Malcolm hood" type canopy. However, P-51B and P-51C were actually the same aircraft: B-models were built in Inglewood, California; C-models were built in Dallas, Texas. The P-51B/C model was equipped with four .50-caliber machine guns, just like the earlier P-51A. The British name for this version was the Mustang Mk.III, and it was probably the fastest war-time Mustang with the engine running at +25psi boost pressure, equivalent to 80.8 inches of mercury. Unfortunately, the P-51B/C models are currently not available in War Thunder - but perhaps some day in the future...?
4. The major change leading to P-51D was the introduction of a bubble canopy for better visibility. However, this caused some increase in the fuselage drag coefficient compared to the earlier P-51B/C models, but the visibility improvements in combat proved to be worth it. The British name for this version was the Mustang Mk.IV, which was also bloody quick but marginally slower than the Mk.III. Additionally, the reduced height of rear fuselage caused some loss of directional stability, which is why later models of P-51D were equipped with a leading edge extension, or a "strake" of the vertical stabilizer, similar to what was fitted on late P-47D models. This upgrade was also retrofitted on many earlier P-51D models that came out of factory without it.
5. Paint configurations varied a lot with Mustangs, regardless of the type. There were P-51B/C models that were metal-coloured - some say unpainted but that's not strictly true, the metal surfaces were painted with a metal paint to protect the aircraft's actual skin from corrosion. And some P-51B/C models had some degree of camouflage paint on them. Some were fully painted, some just on the upper surfaces. The majority of P-51D models were left with clear metal paint, but there were some that were painted over on the top surfaces. This could vary between different units. There is an anecdote about a commander of some unit being on flight, and seeing clear metal P-51s taking off and clearly visible against the dark ground, and simply deciding that all planes in his unit would have painted top surfaces during summer to make them not so glaringly visible.
6. The Aeroproducts propeller used in the P-51K was generally considered inferior in quality to the Hamilton Standard propeller. That's part of the reason why many of those aircraft were delivered to China, or relegated to training role...
7. The P-51H was originally based on the XP-51F, which was a research project to lighten the Mustang to give it more performance. This project eventually developed into a completely new design, even though it bore superficial resemblance to the P-51D. In all honesty it's not really that similar to the original Mustangs, so the validity of calling it a P-51 at all is kind of suspect. It should probably be called the F-51H instead, even though the type number is the same, the different classification would at least make it look different enough to make it more clear that it was a different aircraft. The F-82 Twin Mustang was likewise based on this project.
8. The only P-51s in the game that I haven't flown are the Thunder League P-51A, the Chinese P-51K, and the Swedish J26 (because I haven't received the latter two yet). I don't particularly like the Mustang Mk.IA and the US P-51, but I do like the A-36 Apache. Of the Merlin-powered variants, I particularly like the P-51D-10, D-20 and D-30 due to their improved stability. The P-51D-5 is capable, but difficult to control due to the reduced directional stability. The P-51H is not one of my favourites due to being limited to only 5 minutes of emergency power, and the F-82 I just straight up dislike for being a weird abomination of nature.
You gonna do these reports for everyone or just this video alone?

The A-36 was actually still called the Mustang, there was a brief effort by crewmen to change the name during the scicily invasion to call it the _Invader_ yet it was turned down to not reveal to the enemy that it was a dive bomber version of the P-51 and the invader name was already given to the A-26
The Apache name comes from what _very_ early examples of Mustangs when they were once called Apaches. This name quickly changed to the Mustang, and the name 'Apache' was attributed to the A-36 in the 80's when it reality the A-36 was always called Mustang.
I was taken for a ride in the Commemorative Air Force's P-51D-25NA just last October. It certainly wasn't combat or anything too fancy, but finally flying in my favorite ever aircraft was a great experience. Take off, flight, landing; all of it was the smoothest ever, even when pulling 4G's. It definitely doesn't sound like a lot, but when you're untrained, that can feel like you're being crushed. I can't possibly imagine what it was like to fly it so high and so far, but the time I had with it made it feel like the best aircraft ever.

I don't think it's nerfed as much as you're thinking. A lot of your veichles (specifically for American fighters) you use the boom and zoom tactics and the rolling. Tried doing that with the Lightning after watching your video over the P-38, then I picked up on what was wrong with that.

To be honest the p51 is one of the hardest airplanes to fly and requires a lot of patience and discipline to fly! I personally prefer an aircraft I can quickly climb, attack, and kill off enemies before I turn 80.
Playing Mustang is like playing the stealth class in any game. You make the game 10x longer than it has to be.

@@donovantheowl9432 B and C models are the one that had transition to Merlin engines. And they had "bird cage" canopies. B and C are just exact same variants that had two different manufacturing locations.
I support the B and C in the game. I say they should be 3.7 and since their flight performance is similar to the D-5 but they have less guns (4 brownings Vs. 6) and a slightly less powerful version of the Merlin. They could be tiered aircraft just below the Hispano A Mustang on the American tree.

I’ll tell you what it was like. The slowest roll and maneuverability I’ve ever seen. But it smacks with fire power
Fun fact: The A-36 Apache needed dive brakes because it was a DIVE BOMBER.
Somebody at Gaijin must understand the term "dive bomber", if the Ju 87, Dauntless and Helldiver are in the game.
There is surviving WWII film, and it's been on CZcams for a while now, showing an A-36 squadron on dive bombing missions in the Italian campaign.

Sad
Are we flying the same plane??
You should do Legends: P51 Mustang
YES PLEASE!
I remember when I was playing the P-51D-30, I got so used to the aircraft that I extracted its maximum potential, I used the manual engine control, and when turning I used the takeoff and landing flaps in addition to the combat flap... That secured me several victories, mainly in dogfights with tight turns, thanks to the use of the flaps, as it greatly improved lift and cornering capacity at low speed...
For those of you who are going to use these tips, be careful not to break the flaps by activating them at very high speeds.
I played the A-36 for quite some time but idk it has dive brakes
Answering the question:
P-51: Great fire power, guns jam quickly, not enough ammo
P-51C: It's alright

There are a few myths in this video about the mustang. The Mustang didn't have 100% laminar flow wings. It had laminar flow "style" wings that produced SOME laminar flow. Also while the radiator design did produce SOME thrust, it wasn't substantially more thrust compared to other nations during WWII using similar radiator designs.

Just because its a laminar flow wing, does not mean it achieves laminar airflow. The rivets/fasteners/screws all need to be flush with the body to achieve laminar flow. Most of the P-51s produced in WW2 did not achieve laminar flow because quality control of that level would be incredibly expensive.
It is such an amazing airplane. I believe it is not suitable for new people jointing the game. At least personally I found it difficult to make profit out of RB with this airplane in game with the D5 model.
To play it safe, I guess that mastering boom and zoom tactics first is a must. Also, it resists lots of speed when diving, but energy conservation is not as efficient as in a bf109 so the advice is “don’t dive into a target if you’re not certain of an escape route”. Plan your moves, be patient, and play it safe. Oh almost forgot: use the rudder! It could save you.
Mustangs in real life were not forgiving when not flying by the book. Rudder was the key factor in most of the cases. It flew like a dream in the hands of good pilots.

Instead of wasting time creating a video about planes that have been out since the game launched, why can’t you spend this time instead of making worthless CZcams vids but instead fix the in game problems like helicopter battles(30km maps what?) and improve graphical and online server performance. Not ranting because warthunder is the only game I really enjoy but still, listen to your player base.
Dude, companies have different divisions, the people who make these videos aren't the same people developing the game. It's called a PR division.
The reason for the P-51D's stability problems was not its cut back fuselage, that is one of the many myths of the Mustang. It was a problem with all early Merlin-powered Mustangs, and it wasn't until midway into D production that the fillet modification (which was fitted to both the B/C and the D) became production standard.
Technically the f82 isnt 2 p51's stuck together, it was a complete redesign and only share something like 5 parts with the p51, it was one of the main reasons it took so long to develop
...And these muppets make it sound like the Mustang didn't get a Merlin until the P-51D.
It actually had the Packard-built Merlin for P-51B, C, and D.

I love the American P-51 with 20mm machine guns. Tank bust with AP belts in ground RB and a good fighter to get easy pilot snipes if you're good at dogfighting
You missed the P 51 B (built in California) and C (built in Texas)c which was faster than the D? They were the first ones with the Rolls Royce (later built by Packard) Merlin. It didn't have the bubble canopy bot the Malcom Hood solved visibility problems. With the large in fuselage tank and the drop tanks it was able to escort the B 24s and B17s all the way into Germany. It took the measure of the FW 190s and the Me 109s. The free world owes much to them.
there are some new member of it which are postwar p51's like the turbo munstang mk3 and the pa-48
There should be more P 51’s in the game...
If you really want to fly a proper mustang, check out the P-51 D-15 in IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Bodenplatte.
That thing is AMAZING!
When they add the a-10 they need to do one of these for the thunderbolt.
James Shaw I think the A-10 would be useless. A-10 would be obliterated within seconds in a dog fight. A10 is more of a support type maybe add it in a sim but not for air arcade
Unfortunately in WW2 the P-51s were never designed to scramble from a local airfield and intercept German fighters like they're expected to in War Thunder so odds are you'll be be below your opponent and get dead very fast. Sideclimbing doesn't fix this, it divides the Allied team preventing teamwork. In short, P-51s got air spawns irl, they need it in War Thunder.
My favorite mustang is the F82. I used to attack gunpods and AP shells to do ground strike on lightpillboxes. It out ran most yaks at high altitude. Hands down best mustang out of all.
Mustang is my favorite plane so far
after all these years, you still didnt add the legendary mustang of the tuskegee airmen, id love to see the p51C with the redtails paintjob, a real missed opportunity if you ask me
either way, the mustang family is really a great addition to the game, tho i wish the p51A was still available
Thank you for the translated subtitles.
my fav was the P40 it helped me grind from 2.3 all the way to 5.3 planes coz thats the plane i use coz its so much easier and fun to fly
The P40 is an incredibly stable gun platform. She helped me grind too. Wound a bird from almost 2 km out with an arched shot, close finish.
I own 2 mustangs. The P-51 with 20mm hispanos and the first in the D line. But, I still prefer the earlier model. I fly it a lot in Sim battle and Realistic too. The Mustang series bores its place to my heart and sits there, being a beautiful and rewarding aircraft to fly.
I like the P-51 D-5 I love the 50s xD
and the 1000 LBs bombs
6 50 cals is not a heavier armament than 4 hispanos the burst mass is significantly lower
(I will concede it is definitely a more reliable armament)
Glorious age of piston aircraft indeed, i love modern aircraft to pieces. But props will always be my favorite type of aircraft.
That was the first time a Lanier flow wing was used on an aircraft btw..!
Bf109 b's C's and E's: So we were a dark empty void???!!!
Back in the day there was the P40 and like one P51, and only Britain had the badass Premium Mustang
Freedom, what does it mean? 14 50 cals! (twin mustang)
and dont forget the red tails d and c varients!
I love P-51 with 4 20 milimeter cannons. It's one of my favourite aircraft in the game.
The top variant is great when inexperienced jet players decide to try to turnfight.
Robert Hamman
Griffon spit mk24 too lol
The mustang and spitfire are like some of the iconic piston engine aircraft
I fly the A-36 Apache with gun pods and it is AMAZING
It feels like haven!
Warthunder Gotta update this Video.
They forgot the P-51C-10 model & they gotta put the P-51B-15 “Old Crow” model in the game.
