    Spot on Malcolm. As a snowboarder who only boards for a week 1-3 times a year, I find that the heel-side to toe-side edge change is something have to work on the 1st few days back at it after a long hiatus. Phone filming is so useful. Great episode with advice that's gold - as always!

    @Malcolm Moore, can you do a video on what we can do at home to practice our snowboarding technique and build muscle memory? No for tricks, just better body positioning, control, heel to toe switches, the basics. I live in the desert, so i don't get to go up and board often enough to pull a lot of your exercises together during the seasons.

      Same here (Tempe, AZ) and I go to CO 2-3x per season, but with so much gap in between, I often lose track of building (and maintaining) good habits until my next trip to the mountains.
      But it would be great to understand/have a practice routine that I could do at home (in 70 degree weather ;) ) before an upcoming trip.

    Thank you so much, spent the day on the mountain mentally focused on my pelvic position for and aft, it has improved my riding style so much, toe side carves, I'm now laying trenches. I had gotten into some bad habits, lazy riding style and using too much upper body weight leaning into it too hard. Spot on Bro, thank you, you have upped my style. desperately want to catch up with you on the glaziers or next season for some advanced lessons.

    Great tips! I was getting sore calves and it was because I was using my calves too much on my
    Edges. I’m now bending me
    Knees more on my heel edge and using my thigh muscles more
    Which has helped relieve my calf pain!

    Awesome video! Sadly we cannot snowboard at the moment here in California. The majority of the resorts are closed due to the past days we had some rare snow/rain weather. The mountains got many feet of snow but the road conditions are not suitable for driving, patiently waiting for it to be open hopefully soon

    When I’m staying 90 degrees to the slope, it always felt like I’m falling over my board and doing a 180 flip if I go over a small rock or something. Not to mention the feeling of the weight being too far in front and I’m literally falling 😂 not used to it

    Thank you very much for this video, exactly what I needed! Although I do have a phone, I board alone so noone to record me :(. If you don't have proper platform before you initiate heel to toe change (you traverse slow on a green piste with skidding), aren't you going to catch an edge if you move your weight to the outer edge of the board? I am skidding mostly because my back leg is getting pushed out and it's breaking... If I traverse with a bigger angle my board picks a lot of speed and I manage to control my back leg but with bigger speed I am afraid to take leap of faith and move my hips across the board (afraid to catch an edge with bigger speed thus injuring myself).

    hi malcolm!
    3:02 i was always giving my friends the indication: 'stay on your toes' or 'get on your toes' meaning to stay on the toe-edge. in my head it was logical and knew what to do, but for my friends it was awful. they were litteraly forcing themselves to stand on their toes thus lifting the heels... you can guess the outcome. i changed it to 'lean on your shins' or 'push the knees forward and lean on your shins' or 'stay on your shins/boots', their turns improved drastically.
    How is the snow btw?

      I think I need to dedicate some more time to it, for certain things I quite like it, but I feel like in other conditions the negatives outweigh the positives. So for all mountain riding I'm not sold yet...

    Im a huge fan and have lots of troubles to go from heels to toes, I am usually flat (horizontal) and when I try to go straight im not on the edge.

    Hi Malcolm, I've been thinking about this and did a search of your channel to make sure you didn't cover this before. I am at a resort for about a month and so the issue of physical bodily recovery comes up. I am at a beginner-intermediate level, can do all Greens, just started with easy Blues. After 2 days of riding, or maybe just 1 day of hard riding, I would feel aches at ankles, and inner thighs (lifting legs becomes hard) and other places. By hard riding I mean training techniques I learnt on your channel like going low for carving, or going low to practice down unweighted turns. I noticed going low is significantly more tiring than riding high and casual, using up unweighted turns. Do you have any advise on recovery in all aspects? Maybe take a day off, maybe its about nutrition and eating more protein, maybe doing 1 run of casual riding between 1 run of "hard riding", or maybe my boots/bindings are too tight causing ankle pain etc. Those are some of my ideas but appreciate your input here. Not sure if pros get aches and pains much tho, I assume y'all are more fit and skilled at the moves and maybe don't have such problems.. Thanks for all your great content btw, I spent the whole of today doing the switch/reverb drill mixed with down unweighted turns and am amazed with the progress!

    Hi Malcolm. I'm trying two days to practice wide S on edges, but feels it's still not good. Does the way I'm having my bindings on the board fixed or that my board is 9-years old ;) and bit curved, so no straight edges from front to rear of the board. Tomorrow last day for practising ;)

    I believe a simplest fix (even simpler then the hip fix, it implies a bit the hip fix automatically) when changing edge from heel to toe is: bend rear knee to snow (board does a bit torsional twist then) and wait until the edge comes. I noticed this during switch carving training and it was the simplest fix of all. It helps if weight is a bit on tail during edge change. On toe to heel edge change : lift rear toe and press heel of rear foot into snow, bend your rear knee/leg while pressijg the heel. Didn' t find anywhere these simple fixes. Getting hips then overall more mobilized switch is then next step. Same applies for beginners in regular direction.
    What is your opinion on that?
    you had it once in a torsional video, but was missing the part for the rear heel edge. In regular direction everything is now so natural, that I really lost idea which method to apply when starting to improve switch.

      Yeah I think that for sure will help. I think your tips will probably best help people who already have good edge control though, which is no bad thing at all. As with any advice there's always the possibility of doing the advice and managing to also get something else wrong meaning that it doesn't work, I 100% see what you're saying, but I think it also requires a pretty solid foundation already to go along with it. For example I've even found that from working off of my torsional twist videos alot of people are bending their knees but are completely crumpling at the waist when doing so, thus negating any positive effects!

      @@longebane the front of the board follows automatically if the board is flex 5 or above. On lower flex board there is also front foot edging up necessary. Once the edge grips you shift also the body weight into the turn downhill to make it dynamic and make it hold the edge better. But if you can immediately lock the edge after changing edge one important building step of.carving is already resolved. Next js then carving in and out of the turn before next edge change. Next then Radius control. And carving on steeper terrain. There are many building steps. And keeping the posture /pelvis in right motion position and rhytm (addressed in this video) ist also a building step. At beginning to keep upper body silent and upright and pelvis in right position it helps also to stretch rear arm into a upward position ( like pushup arm position, but just raising hand above your head) . That helps so much in keeping right body position. And as Malcom said, film yourself by another guy using your smartphone. Check upperbody is silent and upright, pelvis in right position. Rear Knee initiating the turn, start on mellow slope, not the steep ones. Good Luck

    @Marcom Moore, why should you not use your calf muscles on toe side turns? Wouldn't you get more fine tuned control over the angle of the board, instead of just using your knees?

      If you're using your calves that means you're pressing your toes down or doing a calf raise which opens up your ankle and allows you to have heel lift. It's not proper technique and has bad control. If you use angles or a closed ankle on heels or toes you could actually carve with no heel lift with very loose boots. Technique is everything. Also if you're using your calves your knees aren't vent enough also.

      @@JPTinioMedia what if you have pretty soft boots? The boot won't have enough rigidity to tilt the board when your knees bend. You will have to contract your calves, not necessarily to the point of causing heel lift, but at least to lift the heel side of the board and increase the angle no?

    This is how I figure good snowboarding technic :

    The upper half of the body, above the center of gravity, mustn't move. Everything is happening below the center of gravity, as you say : from the hips. And chickens heads are best at that 😄
    I practice it going straight in the slope, looking at some point away, and my sight mustn't move while I'm doing small turns from an edge to the other, I must keep my eyes on the chosen point without needing any head or eye movements. Of course it doesn't work for wide turns, but it's interesting to feel the idea, doing small turns in a raw.
