my first car was a 79 trans am with a 301, great car for sure, they're virtuously the same car except for engines and cosmetics, saw them built at the old fisher body plant in Norwood Ohio they had trans am's firebirds, and camero's literally side by side on the assembly line,half my family worked there. those were the days ! plant has been shut down about 25 years now, it sucks, the whole town went to shit when it shut down
I had an 81 firebird with the big t tops.also had the same keystone rims in back and cra gers in front.prefer hardtop cars ,the t top rattle on mine drove me nuts not to mention the water leaks.
I miss my midnight blue 79 t/a with a silver bird. It was my 1st car, bought for $700 with a bad motor. Another 700 bucks, and a few months later, had a rebuilt 455 in her. Did a lot of body work with a friend then a full 10 months after I bought it, got t-boned by a blazer and twisted the hell out of the unibody. Shed a few tears watching the flatbed drive away.
actually it is not a oldsmobile motor it is base on the pontiac platform the oil pan valvecovers valley pan under intake timingchain ect will all fit the 326-350-400-421-428-455 pontiac motors the only diffrence in the bolt on parts was heads and intake.I use to race pontiacs.the olds motor that was used in the 6.6 trans am in 79-81 was a 403 the small motor made by oldsmobile was a 260 never put in firebirds the formula used 301 pontiac and 305 sbc .

The black one is gonna be a daily driver. Im gonna put as little money as possible into it,but make minor modifications here and there,like different seats,flat black paint job,maybe duel exhaust,tune up etc..
Why would anyone put a Olds 455 in TA. I know people did it . I could see that if there was a olds 403 in there originally . There strong motors. But there were plenty of Pontiac 400s and 455s back in the day to do that. Pontiac 455s were strong engines with 500 ft lbs of torque.

I'm a GM guy all the way but lets be honest...Aside from being good looking cars with proven drivetrains, those 2nd generation Firebirds and Camaros were junk when it came to interior quality..the doors were shit too. Now that I think about it, GM as a whole was shitty in the late 70's in to the 80's
I heard that the Trans-Am(495 PS) was using a 4-Speed Automatic Transmission,the Firebird(205 PS) used a 3-Speed Automatic Transmission.Am I right?:-)(I like the 1982 model Trans-Am,5-Speed.I'm a 90's Chinese boy,so I prefer the Gearboxes more than 5-Speed!)
