    I graduated in 78 and the 79 T/A was the car to have. I would have picked a 79 Trans Am over a 79 Vette and I love Vettes too.

    I'm 100% this is the Trans Am that was used in the recent movie Empire State. If you notice the 1 headlight that's out of alignment, you'll see the exact same one in the movie.

    Bill Smith the "Z" stands for Pontiac 400 engine. It's right in the owners manual for any 1977 -79 Formula or Trans Am.

    thats kinda weird because the smokey and the bandit car was a 1977 and the smokey and the bandit 2 was a 1980 with the 301 and another thing is if the numbers do match on the motor and car then it would be the 6.6 liter 403 olds engine because 78 was the last year for the pontiac 400

    I just had mine restored and did a video on it too. I love these cars and I just had to have one!! However some history Smokey and The Bandit was in 77, 77TA T-top special edition. Smokey and The Bandit 2 was a 1980 T-top 301 turbo special edition car. This is another great T.A., nice car for sure!!!! Did it sell and if it did, how much???

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp Před 5 lety

      The first S&B movie car was actually a 1976 Y82 SE car fitted with 1977 parts. When the movie came out, the producers (and Pontiac) didn't want an "old" car being shown so they fitted it with 1977 parts. The car was actually a 1976. This is evidenced by a scene in the movie when he's driving down the road and one of the four headlights is out. 1976 was a two headlight system, 1977 had four (first year for it), and someone probably made a poor connection when converting it and the light went out.

    Unable to respond to michael schoelhamer (below) about how these numbers can't match due to the fact that the Pontiac 400 wasn't offered in 1979. Clearly the pontiac 400ci engine was available when coupled with a 4-speed. (See below) There is also question about GM using a surplus of leftover 400's from 1978. I myself have seen an original california car. 1979 with TA/6.6 with a Pontiac 400 and an automatic. Unmodified.
    *wikipedia - The 400/403 options remained available until 1979, when the 400 CID engines were only available in the 4-speed transmission Trans Ams and Formulas (the engines had actually been stockpiled from 1978, when PMD had cut production of the engine).

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp Před 5 lety

      A lot of people confuse the "California" car in these years. #1, these were assembled in Van Nuys, CA although they were not offered for sale there. With #1 being said, there were some 400s that slipped and have been registered in California. However, the 400 did not come with an automatic in 1979. Only the Borg Warner Super T-10 4 speed.

      @cars929 Před 5 lety

      Yep like the 454 in my 1977 Chev c 20, it is registered ( on my current registration and when in the US ) as having a 350, but was modified by GM as a motorhome in 1977 with a 454

    There are a number of incorrect points made by this speaker. I am the original owner of 3 Trans Ams - 79, 83, 02. The 79 Black 400 Special Edition Trans Am came with gold call outs around the front grill, the engine turned instrument panel with the RPO Y84 option was a true Bandit. The car also had as an option an AM FM Stereo Tri Band 40 channel CB. VIN should read 2W87Z9xxxxxx..... 2W87=2 door, W87 (Firebird), Z=Norwood, OH plant, 9=1979 model,xxxxxx=sequence no. Mine in shop 2.5 years SFO

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp Před 5 lety

      The VIN for a 400 1979 Trans Am could be either 2W87Z9N123456, or 2W87Z9L123456. It goes like this: 2 for Pontiac Motor Division, W for Trans Am (10th Anniversary cars got an X instead of a W for the 2nd digit of the VIN), 87 is 2 door plainback coupe, Z is for the Pontiac 400 engine (which only came with a 4 speed manual transmission in 1979), 9 for 1979 model year, N was for Norwood, OH assembly, L was for Van Nuys, CA assembly and the last six are the production sequence. Yes, you have to have a Y84 on your PHS report or build sheet to authenticate a true Black Special Edition car.

    I made a typo above: Should be Z=400 (not 403!), 9=1979, N=Norwood, OH assembly plant. All 1979 SEs and 10th Anniversary Silver Editions - Federal Cars (not California) were Hurst 4 speed STICK 400s with Borg Warner Super T-10 Transmissions. California ONLY got Oldsmobile 403 automatic engines (no sticks). This is a FEDERAL car, but not a Y84 Special Edition (Bandit). He should have looked at the options plate above the brake booster. I've converted mine to rack and pinion w/Edelbrock parts

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp Před 5 lety

      Not all cowl tags have the Y84 stamped on them. Van Nuys, CA produced cars typically did not. The definitive way is to look at the Pontiac Historical Society (PHS) report or the build sheet to find the Y84. No Y84? Not a Black SE from the factory. Many dealers sold customers the parts over the counter or "converted" them with SE parts (as many folks were willing to pay for that back in the day), so that is why you see a lot of non SE cars with SE parts. Also, several of the SE parts (engine turned dash, stripe kits, etc) have been available in the aftermarket for years, making it easy for someone to "SE" a car that wasn't one originally.

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp Před 5 lety

      Not all SE cars were stick in 1979. Only if they were the 1,107 that were equipped with a Pontiac 400. You could get a Black SE car in 1979 that was a 301 (either as an automatic or manual transmission). Both were certified for Federal use. You could also get a T-top delete on an SE in 1979. They are rare, but they are out there. I've seen ones for sale on Ebay with the PHS reports to back them up.

      Juan Guillen The second Smokey and the Bandit was filmed in 1980, Two 1980 Turbo Trans Am's were used with Nitrous injection added to tale up the slack for Turbo Lag. The one used in Rocky was an automatic therefore it was an Olds 403.

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp Před 5 lety

      @@moutnlovr2 which is hilarious because if you remember in the second Rocky movie, there's a scene where he attempts to drive it and it's stalling and bucking (like a person that doesn't know how to drive a manual transmission). It's clearly a 403 equipped car. I actually paused the movie to check. LOL.

  • @bezerkkk

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp Před 5 lety +1

      There was never a GM/factory 'Bandit" car. The correct term is "Black Special Edition". Trans Am Specialties of Cherry Hill, NJ produced an aftermarket "Bandit" car, but it was not GM authorized. The long arm of the EPA started knocking asking about engine mods and they eventually went out of business.
