Coconut Mall from Mario Kart Wii just...hits different than other courses, why is that? Support me on Patreon so I can do this for a living! I'd really appreciate it! / zoomzike
Most tracks feel like a racetrack that's themed like whatever and given a thin coat of mushroom kingdom paint. Coconut Mall feels like what a mall would feel like if it were in a specific, pre-established Mario location and then adapted slightly to become a racetrack.
Yeah, Mariokart Wii has got the best tracks and its all due to just this fact here, that people like them as a place in the mario universe rather than just a race track.
@@lol-ih1tl I mean, I always found it fun seeing my miis in coconut mall, it's more that people are more likely to speak when a fun feature is removed, compared to a fun feature being added.
Koopa Cape also captured my heart for some reason too. I think the dynamic music mixed with the atmosphere of entering the tube (filled with janky shock thingies) probably did it for me
I also love that huge ramp at the start of Koopa Cape. Koopa Cape, Coconut Mall, Maple Treeway and Mario Kart Wii's Rainbow Road are some of my favorite courses out of any Mario Kart game!
I think it’s safe to say that Mario Kart Wii has the best line up of tracks to race on. I hope that the MK8D Booster pass includes the Rainbow Road tracks from Wii and DS as those are the most dynamic tracks ever.
You know, this makes me think that it's a real missed opportunity that there's no New Donk City stage in Mario Kart. I could imagine it being like the festival section, with New Donkers cheering you on and a track suspended in the air that twists around the skyscrapers or even goes inside some of the buildings.
The idea of driving in a mall is super cool to me. And the music is probably the first theme I think of when someone talks about Mario kart wii. Riding up elevators too? That's never been done before and I love it.
You can ride up escalators with a bicycle or motorcycle in GTA San Andreas, though. I'm sure there's a game before that where you drive up an escalator. Also I like assuming you're Dutch because you made the classic Dutch mistake of saying "to ride" when you meant "to drive", since "driving" is "rijden". :)
The music alone sounds like something used in a comedy skit of someone skipping through the mall and doing a shopping montage before getting on an elevator before 'restarting' the same routine.
Coconut Mall was always my favorite growing up, there's so much to do oh yeah I chose the escalators on reaction, I didn't know about the Pianta pointing until recently

The metal curves you talked about, I believe the were shutters. Like when one of a mall's shops are closed and the either have metal bars os something akin to a garage door shutting it off.

ZoomZike omg thanks for replying!! :’) And I believe that MK7 made the Wii tracks bland and boring. And the did my favorite wii track, maple treeway, so dirty.
Man, me and my brother loved spending time just hanging out in the courses on vs mode. Going in reverse, checking every corner of the tracks, creating our little stories with the characters... I'm pretty sure that we have more time spent in this game playing "our own way" instead of just racing normally. Coconut Mall is without a doubt one of my favorite courses in the entire franchise. Great video, Zoom, it's really impressive that you made such a cohesive analysis on your first take! It's says a lot about your talent.
Something I like about the music is that it usually syncs with the sections of the track, the piano in the main room, the sax in the Coconut Garden, and the accordion for the food court and the parking lot
i would love to hear your thoughts on the new one, i see you've already acknowledged the new comments talking about it i have... a lot of personal gripes with it. i think they sucked a lot of life out of the original here's what i discovered: -new one removes the huge scale of the original, with no visible lower floors or higher floors and any higher balcony shown is empty with no spectators and you can BARELY see inside any of the stores, making it REEEALLY feel small. it is weird.. -no miis -parking lot is static -elevators have huge arrows on it showing which way to go, which sucks because it diminishes the immersion of driving through a mall and it ruins the fun of choosing the wrong one. not to mention, the og had a pianta actually pointing at which one to go, which the new one does not have for SOME reason -all the plants look artificial, especially the flowers. they made all of the flowers super small... the coconut/palm trees dont even have coconuts in them anymore, they look like inflatable decorations due to the flat patterns on them -they removed the "have a nice day!" and "thank you!" signs, really ruins the warm feel of the original -the "coconut mall" logo on the front now just has the Super Mario font with less colors, also removing the pianta above it -a lot of the color feels botched...it focuses on orange WAY heavier than the original with highly saturated colors. it makes the mall not feel as widely appealing -that BIG coconut mall beach ball in the middle is just GONE??????? ...that's all the main gripes i have with it to not be 100% negative, i will mention changes i like MKTV trucks are aplenty outside, all those red arrow signs from mariokart wii present here are replaced with actual things! few examples: vending machine in the food court area, more roomy walls at the entrance of the stage, there's an actual parking lotto thingy in the parking lot area the shortcut areas look nicer, you can actually see how you drive through a clothing store and the one at the end has new flooring which helps make it feel like a different path the ocean within the parking lot area has rock formations and a cruise (i wonder if its daisy cruise? just a thought.) that's it

Coconut Mall makes you want to go back and actually visit/explore the mall and shop. It almost has this theme park feel to it as well, in the sense that it would be an event to go visit.
Its colorful, vibrant, and as a kid, the idea of driving inside a mall seems super cool and a fantasy you realize you dont want until you see it. Also that little mario touch is just neat.
Some things I think are quite underappreciated are the ramps and how they're positioned, whether it's the water fountain or whatever, there's lots of different opportunities to trick off it, you could either just drive around, go over the top, or do a side trick. Plus, the music flows so well, I played the course on time trials a lot, so I remember where every part of the music fits each part of the course, such as when the accordion kicks in at 45 seconds, which always happens when I reach lap 2. I get that feeling with other courses, but none feel quite as satisfying as this one.
Same but the more I think about it the less sense it makes. Like who's lap does it consider? What about online mode? Knowing that it's just set intervals makes way more sense
Coconut Mall's music is a meme for a reason. It's so open yet also so detailed and lively! That and it captures the most memorable parts of malls like the multiple floors that allow you to see the ones below and above you, water fountains, escalators, plenty of posters, people who drive carelessly, etc. When playing Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart that has this track modded into it, everyone votes for Coconut Mall. It's a track that makes me so happy and one I hope continues to encapsulate the craziness of malls and Mario Kart. Besides, cars driving around in malls isn't unusual.

Its just adorable sometimes I wouldn't say emotions are forced in scripts but they definitely feel suppressed to maintain a "professional" presentation
Coconut Mall, Maple Tree Way and Koopa Cape were my favorites as a kid. On the whole, Mario Kart Wii had some solid race courses that are just fun to race through while also providing some interesting aesthetics.
I never actually buy anything at malls but I love going to them. And I have a lot of memories as a kid and a teenager going to malls and hanging out with friends and stuff and they were nostalgic and fun and usually designed pretty well too. I think they captured that well as well as bringing in a fantastical element and the music fit perfectly
Once, to lighten the mood of a particularly competitive MKW session with my siblings, I drove up to the burger place near the end of the course, parked, and pretended to order a huge fast food meal as Funky Kong. My place in the race sucked, but my siblings were laughing, so my plan worked perfectly. Also, Coconut Mall's music is 👌
Just the amount of people who drove through the mall and that music that refuses to be hated just coexist perfectly here, and who else but Mario to capitalize on such a winning formula?
I love the love the little things of things in games I reamber sometimes I just looked around in sonic adventure levels I just adore the ashetic. I'm really glad people talk about many of these little design stuff, I thought I was like the only one. srry for spelling.
I think Coconut Mall is probably the most iconic Mario Kart track. The combination of its unique concept with the popularity of Mario Kart Wii makes it the one that I think the most amount of people would choose when asked to name a Mario Kart track. The only counter I've heard is Rainbow Road, but there are so many Rainbow Roads that it would probably spread a specific one too thin.
To be fair, most other tracks are tracks first and settings later. Coconut Mall feels like it was made as just a mall, but is being used as a race track.
I fell in love with Coconut Mall because there's just so many ROUTES to take. So many that the course almost feels non-linear, like an open-world game of sorts. I actually want to take the time to quantify just how many options it gives... First escalators: 3 options (up-escalator, down-escalator, or ride the ramps) Top floor: 3 options (left side, right side, down-escalator) Top floor, right side: 3 options (normal route to escalator, shop shortcut and jump from mezzanine, double-mushroom shortcut) 2nd escalator: 3 options (go down the escalator, ride the ramp, or drive off the mezzanine) 3rd set of escalators: 3 options (up-escalator, down-escalator, or ride the ramps) Courtyard: 3 options (left boost panel, right boost panel, center route with fountain/tree tricks) Food court: 2 options (upper ramp and lower ramp) Before parking lot: 2 options (go narrow with turn or go wide to get item box from the mini ramp) Parking lot: 2 options, sort of (play it safe and stay on one side, swerve to hit all boost panels without hitting cars)
Coconut Mall is literally so charming. They captured the feeling of vacation and fun, with the colors, sounds, and scenery. Literally, I've spent a lot of time exploring Coconut Mall throughout the years. I would like to visit this location in real life!!! It's very bubbly and warm. It would be nice to have some remakes of this map!
I agree but the reason I like it is for the memories of playing it and messing round the area trying to find shortcuts or pretending to be an actual customer.
Speaking of meat in Mushroom Kingdom, there are cows in Moo Moo Meadows that could potentially serve as a source for meat, and if we're counting the Paper Mario series, there would be pigs too.
I'm not usually a fan of unscripted stuff, most people come off as rambly and low-effort. but I've really been enjoying these, you still communicate your ideas really clearly while getting to be more off-the-cuff. good shit man!
Imagine Nintendo creating an actual coconut mall where you can buy Nintendo products like their New York store, but at the next level. Like if you agree that idea.
I can't believe how great you are at doing things in one take. The fact that this video was done with no editting is seriously impressive. I found a lot of your behind the Zike video very entertaining also and those were also done in one take.
in most Mario games, it's usually set in this bizarre abstract world with giant mushrooms and floating blocks. But coconut mall is set in our world with our things, so it just makes it more fun to watch the Mario characters interact with our things (kinda like the appeal for Luigi's mansion 3) in my opinion
Pretty sure the metal pipe is just supposed to be like a modern art kind of staircase, malls often have sorta modern art types of staircases so i think thats whats going on there
I remember as a kid, just exploring coconut mall on my DS in ghost mode. It was absolutely magical to me. There was so many little details and cool things to just stop and look at. It was marvelous.
Coconut Mall gives off the same personal feeling as Royal Raceway from Mario Kart 64. Both courses makes me want to explore the course rather than racing. Really bummed that you couldn’t explore the castle grounds in future versions of the same course... Also fun fact: some vegan burgers actually replace the patty with a portobello cap! Got that info from my favorite weeb, Demolition D!
I would absolutely love to visit a Coconut Mall inspired level in a 3D Mario game. Racing through a mall is amazing, but imagine walking through and platforming in one!
11:50 OK so here's a pointless little thing. I never really went out of my way to read all of the signs in the mall or anything, but just now when you stopped in front of the "Moo Moo Dairy" I actually read it as "Moe Moe Diary", and even mistook the cows on the sides as small portraits of Hatsune Miku smiling cheerfully. I may or may not have a problem.
One really cool detail I recall is that any usage of Miis in courses like Coconut Mall would never be a Mii currently in use as a racer. Speaking of Miis, if you were using one, courses would get some extra Mii details. One example would be the giant Luigi Statue on Luigi Circuit becoming a statue of a Mii in a Luigi costume. Once again, the Mii racer(s) in use wouldn't appear as background Miis. They really went all in with the details in this game.
I’d say this is video was a lot more engaging than the tick tick clock one, you were very in point all the time and it was just a great video, good job! I always look forward to another June Zoom video every night lol

I always loved urban/social places ( mushroom city/toad harbor/super bell subway/sunshine Airport etc) turned into tracks for the mario kart series
I never realised that pianta points at the right escalator. This course has so many details!
I love the love the little things of things in games I reamber sometimes I just looked around in sonic adventure levels I just adore the ashetic. I'm really glad people talk about many of these little design stuff, I thought I was like the only one. srry for spelling.
As a kid I thought the metal things the piñatas added were domino inspired walls
First escalators: 3 options (up-escalator, down-escalator, or ride the ramps)
Top floor: 3 options (left side, right side, down-escalator)
Top floor, right side: 3 options (normal route to escalator, shop shortcut and jump from mezzanine, double-mushroom shortcut)
2nd escalator: 3 options (go down the escalator, ride the ramp, or drive off the mezzanine)
3rd set of escalators: 3 options (up-escalator, down-escalator, or ride the ramps)
Courtyard: 3 options (left boost panel, right boost panel, center route with fountain/tree tricks)
Food court: 2 options (upper ramp and lower ramp)
Before parking lot: 2 options (go narrow with turn or go wide to get item box from the mini ramp)
Parking lot: 2 options, sort of (play it safe and stay on one side, swerve to hit all boost panels without hitting cars)
These are all really great points and observations but the real reason people love it is just because of the music
I agree but the reason I like it is for the memories of playing it and messing round the area trying to find shortcuts or pretending to be an actual customer.
Coconut mall feels like the perfect level for everybody from beginners to speedrunners.
Speaking of meat in Mushroom Kingdom, there are cows in Moo Moo Meadows that could potentially serve as a source for meat, and if we're counting the Paper Mario series, there would be pigs too.
Good thing it’s coming back in MK8D as DLC this March 😊
I'm not usually a fan of unscripted stuff, most people come off as rambly and low-effort. but I've really been enjoying these, you still communicate your ideas really clearly while getting to be more off-the-cuff. good shit man!
I REALLY enjoy the one takes and oh my gosh this was fun to listen to
Ty, I needed this to chill out tonight
Why do we love Coconut Mall?
*Yes.*
It looks better in Wii's version than mk8 one
The best thing about Mario Kart Wii and Coconut Mall especially is the Miis you've created being seen throughout the track.
Imagine Nintendo creating an actual coconut mall where you can buy Nintendo products like their New York store, but at the next level.
Like if you agree that idea.
I like the small details and I can notice because I am always in last place
I can't believe how great you are at doing things in one take. The fact that this video was done with no editting is seriously impressive. I found a lot of your behind the Zike video very entertaining also and those were also done in one take.
in most Mario games, it's usually set in this bizarre abstract world with giant mushrooms and floating blocks. But coconut mall is set in our world with our things, so it just makes it more fun to watch the Mario characters interact with our things (kinda like the appeal for Luigi's mansion 3) in my opinion
Pretty sure the metal pipe is just supposed to be like a modern art kind of staircase, malls often have sorta modern art types of staircases so i think thats whats going on there
on the wierd silver stairs i've always thought of it as a cheese grater when i was younger. idk what stuff my brain was on back then
1:57 That looks kinda like Tari's jacket!
9:15 I always considered the lower route the main route and the upper route the fancy route for adventurers.
When I was 5 or 6, and my little sister was 3 or 4, we'd roleplay in Coconut Mall just for giggles
I knew about the Miis in the cars but I never noticed the Miis on the posters. Thats cool!
This video has that childlike quality of someone just going on and on about something they really like.
I like it.
I would absolutely love to visit a Coconut Mall inspired level in a 3D Mario game. Racing through a mall is amazing, but imagine walking through and platforming in one!
You make me want to buy a wii more and more with each video you make.
Imagine how awesome a massive Coconut Mall battle track would be
Dude, I've owned this game for such a LONG time and I've literally NEVER noticed the Miis on the posters until now
Zoomzike: goes down the escalator in the beginning
Competitive mkwii player: wait thats illegal
dude i have no idea how youre able to do this so well unscripted its a great talent
I’d say this is video was a lot more engaging than the tick tick clock one, you were very in point all the time and it was just a great video, good job! I always look forward to another June Zoom video every night lol
These one-take videos are so impressive, and they're undoubtedly training your commentary very well. This style is very much appreciated, I can't wait to see how your commentary improves in the future.
This video really goes into detail about things I never took into consideration. It’s amazing! ❤️
