My elementary lunch lady was so kind to me. I had switched schools a few times in first grade and it was so hard! She was the first person that really made eye contact with me on that first day and could tell i was having a rough time. It made all the difference just to have someone take a second to just acknowledge my feelings then. Once we got to know each other better she made sure to stash a chocolate milk for me in case they ran out. Thank you Ms Rachel, wherever you ended up, I hope your life is amazing!

IMO the custodial & cafeteria staff are the hardest working & most underappreciated folks in a school.

The lunch lady at my elementary school was the best. One year I had a really bad panic attack during field day and had to sit in the office most of the day because I Could Not Handle the chaos of all the games and whatnot, and she came in to make sure I got an extra ice cream treat because she was worried about me and wanted to make me feel better.

I remember begging my mom for school lunch. So finally one day she broke down and gave me 35 cents (I’m 67 now) and said “hope this is the last time you ask”. And it was. I thought it would be like eating in a restaurant. Boy was I wrong. Dry slice of bread, something that had coagulated long past it’s prime, some brown apple slices and a warm carton of milk. And the lunch ladies were scary. Somehow my mind sees them with a cigarette hanging out the corner of their mouths.

Your experiences are valid. I think too often in TV shows, lunch folks are seen and shown as crabby because it's apparently a shameful or bad job to be working in a cafeteria, when it's pretty similar to any other chef job. Plus, dealing with entitled folks, children, adults, ect, can be pretty draining and lead anyone to possibly becoming jaded. And while I don't imagine it was too long ago, when you were a kid, lunch folks weren't often treated very well, because of their position, which lead to this cycle of being a lunch server being seen as shameful, which would lead to more poor treatment. Hopefully, as humanity matures, this cycle will fade out

I used to be on the “lunch lady crew!” The district I worked for had a food truck that went around to a handful of high schools in the district (one school each day). It was so awesome and the kids thought it was so cool to get to eat from a food truck on campus. Anyway, that was one of my most favorite jobs! Our crew was awesome and even on the most stressful days, we always had a great time!

For creating a space all day long that's safe for children and then coming on here and giving me not only a smile and a good feeling but something that makes me want to do better and be better 🙂God Bless!

I'm so glad you realized the lunch crew isn't all crazy haired ladies that slap your food in a plastic tray and go on about their business or grunt and do that too. I loved my lunch ladies. They always took good care of us kids who didn't have much and need a little extra food.

I am 51 years old and still remember the lunch ladies names. Even knew where one of them lived ( right behind the grade school, over the fence, one of the nicest people ever. The grade school was full of low income students and lunch meant a lot to us. The creamed turkey over mashed potatoes was always the highlight during the winter times.

I am 44 years old and I have memories of my middle school lunch ladies being cranky as well. However, there was one lady that was sweet as can be. Her name was Ms. Annette and she was a wonderful soul. All the ladies who worked in our Cafeteria were middle aged and had to put up with a bunch of thankless kids all day, so I can understand why they were cranky.

When I was working as a food service worker there I had fantastic co workers who were just like the ladies you spoke about and some may not of been the kindest. We always loved kind respectful teachers like yourself . 😁

My lunch lady was really nice. Mrs. Noble was great. She was my 6th grade teacher's mom. She would always send him up a big lunch. He was 6' 6 1/2" and thin. In the afternoon, he would sneak what he didn't eat to the dumpster. He didn't want to hurt her feelings. I loved them both.

The elementary school I went to was notorious for how good their lunches were. People from all over the county would hold their meetings at that school so they could have their lunches in Mrs. Pearson's cafeteria. I sometimes ate there when I was in high school because I would get out at 12:30, walk to the elementary school, and stay as a volunteer till my niece was out and then walk her home. If they were still serving when I got there, I would eat lunch. I still remember her molasses oatmeal cookies with a nostalgia akin to mourning.

I just think for those of us who are a little older, for some reason had the same experience with lunch crew. I finally got over it with my youngest child was in elementary and I never had enough $ for their lunch card and she would always provide my son with a hot lunch when the school required them to have a simple wrapped sandwich if they didn’t have $ on their card.
They were son kind and even when they got in trouble for it, still continued to not make my son suffer. Gosh those years were hard but we’re good now😊

I dont mean to trauma dump, but as someone whose life was saved from traumatic abuse by my kindergarten teacher and who ate because a so properly named cafeteria woman named Ms. Heart, I have a special place in my heart my teachers and cafeteria workers. ❤❤❤

My kiddos schools, all three different schools, have a whole day that they dedicate to the lunch crew and after school clean up crew. All the kids know the lunch staff by name and absolutely love them like they do the teachers. It wasn't like this for me as a kid. When I had children and started working on the PTO I found this out and was so excited. These folks are our other parents away from home and my goodness, they love these kids and know all their names and even know the things they like and dislike to eat. Shout out to all school staff. These folks are our children's saving grace home away from home!!!

Kids are so impressionable! I treated people, and had assumptions and opinions about certain groups of people based off of my mothers treatment, assumptions and opinions. Boy was THAT wrong. I have since changed and I no longer do that. I wait and get to know people and judge them off the behavior they show me as an INDIVIDUAL 👍🏻 making sure to give them lots of chances to be kind and respectful or come out of their shell. Sometimes people have bad days, or past trauma etc etc 🤷🏻‍♀️

Since, I’ve sought to be more open and kind… accepting…. No preconceived notions….. and I’m super grateful! Blessings to you and your wife, the young minds you are helping to sculpt and i can’t not mention lima bean kid 🫶😂
