- The people of Dún Laoghaire give their thoughts on Christmas.
RTÉ News goes on to the streets of Dun Laoghaire and asks people, young and old what they think of Christmas and the growth of commercialisation? Here are just some of the views expressed.
On the giving of presents and the cost of gifts.
Christmas is meant for gifts, small gifts, but I think we’re all gone mad.
The concentration on shopping for presents for one woman means,
We forget God and what it really means.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 17 December 1982. The reporter is Peter McNiff. - Zábava
When I see these old people in these old clips, I wonder about the history of their personal lives, what they saw, what they experienced.
But what's most important is what are they expecting now. Think of when you get old and what people might think of your generation
that last dude, guys, that last dude.
Brands are mass produced in a Factory , but to Create is in your mind. Lovely happy jolly people. Bless them All. Thanks you CRS--- for the post...🙏🙏🙏🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🙏🙏🙏
To think that some of these people were likely born during the 19th century it shows how fast time moves on and we all become part of history such is the inevitabilties of life
Well, probably more like the early 1900s I would think. None of them look past their 80s. But I'm splitting hairs really...
I'm not a religious person anymore, I consider myself a "recovering southern baptist", but the old lady at 1:04 is exactly correct: we've long forgotten what it's really about. Regardless of my views today, I still find the story of the Nativity hopeful. Today it's commercialization on steroids, especially when you consider we're in an era of hyperinflation & insurmountable debt. It's sickening. It's not really even about trees and Santa. I kinda don't blame the guy who hated Christmas, I'm turning into a scrooge myself. Even Easter has long been co-opted, strangely enough by bunny rabbits and eggs.
Commercialization co-opted the Christian holidays and celebrations. But before that there were winter and spring festivals that Christmas took from other faiths and traditions.
Why eggs at Easter? It's a fertility symbol. Even the name Easter comes from the name of an old pagan Germanic goddess.
@@Miglow l think it's the link between eggs & bunnies that's confusing.
People should definitely forget about presents. The whole meaning of Christmas is lost..
That's a fact
I would like a "handkerchief, given in good faith" for Christmas. No joke
I'd like his orange hat for Christmas
I was five years old here, now I'm feeling my age.
It would have been better to ask them what was going on in the cottage home at the time
This was long before the Celtic Tiger and Ireland was a poor country. People didn’t have the money to go out an buy lots of presents.
If only they knew in the future people would splash out on bleeding matching pyjamas every year.
Religion is a tax free business but without it we would have to work those holidays so I say keep it going I need every paid day off I can get.
Peadar 😂 Some man
