This is a follow-up to a previous video I made about the first Five Nights at Freddy's game, which you can watch here: • How Audio Enhances the...
Thanks to my friends Wolfgang and DerEineSchwarzeRabe for helping me with writing this script!
In this video, I share a spoiler-free look at several sequels in the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, and explain different ways that they use sound effects to intensify gameplay! There are many ways a sound can become "intense," and each game has something unique to highlight! Hopefully I can deliver all this info concisely, before all the animatronics in this video make their way into my studio...

Sounds about right
Also the toilet seat.
You think it isn't loud during the day? That thing is always loud to me, but I also don't like outputting a lot of loud sounds.
To me, it has to be toilet paper. That stuff seems very loud to touch during the night. But it could be a larger part of dragging your fingers or/and hands along surfaces, as that is what is loud with toilet paper. During the day, it may be a lot less noticeable.

Okay, I just need to know. Why do people say "May both sides of your pillow always be cold." Is it supposed to be a compliment and if it is, how is it a compliment? I've seen people say "I hope both sides of your pillow are warm" too as an insult, which I also don't understand.
@@TGG104 when people say that they hope both sides of your pillow are cold, it's a good thing, because it means that whatever you said was really nice, or it was really helpful. Some people don't like it when their pillows are warm, because it's uncomfortable. So when somebody says, I hope your pillow is warm, it's an insult because ppl don't like warm pillows to sleep on.
@@TGG104 or when you lay your head on a pillow it should be cold because of cold air but because of your body heat throughout the night it makes one side of your pillow warm, so when you flip it the other side should be cold because your body heat didn't transfer to the other side of the pillow. That's why people say I hope BOTH sides of your pillow are cold. And when they say, hope both sides of your pillow are warm, they just mean, I hope your body heat transferred to heat over to the other side. That's ur full explanation right there. Lmao

I’m sure someones mentioned this already, but I’d like to point it out anyways.
Since our antagonist in fnaf 3 is William Afton, the infamous “purple guy” who murdered the children, this plays in to the balloon boy sounds. When you play the audio clips, it lures springtrap away from you.
It’s not very chilling until you think about the fact that you are trapped in a small building with a child murderer who will only go away from you when he hears the noises of children laughing or saying “hello”.
Springtrap is *LITERALLY* following the noises of *CHILDREN* *AT* *PLAY*, believing he has more prey to capture, lives to alter, birthdays to ruin, parents to concern, etc. he’s still the same man he was before death.
Partially. You see, there is a mechanism in the spring bonnie suit that makes it go to where the children are. And it does that by sound cues. Whenever the suit hears children's sounds, it immediately follows to that location. So its more like spring bonnie suit overrides what William wants to do when there are children's sounds nearby
Either way, it's pretty unnerving to think that Afton, willingly or not, is lured by the sounds of potential victims
@@anlkucuk6756Exactly. Spring Bonnie wasn't designed with Balloon Boy's audio in mind, so while the fnaf 2 animatronics would be able to recognize that he isn't a real child and therefore wouldn't follow his voice when a room goes quiet, Spring Bonnie only hears a child. William Afton isn't possessing the suit; he's possessing his own corpse. The suit is its own separate entity and can move of its own accord, despite where William might be trying to make it go.
@@UgleBeffusWhich makes the idea of Springtrap more unsettling. He is fully aware, of where you are and that you are watching him, and he knows that the sounds of balloon boy laughing aren't real. He is still fully conscious and if it wasn't for that mechanism in the Spring Bonnie suit, he would simply head straight for you
@@zenoluvswof9936 Try telling this to someone who only just picked up FNAF 3. Tell them the person possessing Springtrap is actually fighting the animatronic's AI - and that if the AI suddenly stopped working, nothing would stand between you and him.
I think weirdly enough, a good amount of these principles can be found with Subnautica’s Reaper Leviathan given the circumstances that you encounter them.
The Dunes and the Crash Zone, the most common places to find Reaper Leviathans both lack substantial ambience music. They’re extremely quiet so you can listen for the distant roars of the Leviathan to detect if they are nearby since the biomes themselves are too murky for you to spot them.
Then, having the eerily quiet ambience suddenly interrupted by that same deep roar you’ve heard in the distance, but clear instead of muffled; thousands of times louder; and much longer (signifying that the Reaper is now chasing you), instills a sense of panic that even usurps some horror games.
This is why Subnautica is brilliant
God I love subnautica.
real most common place is the reaper leviathan zone. but yeah. also the eco dead zone out of the map has no noise, and it's where you meet adult ghost levis. that panic is very scary.
@Charon the Toaster the dead zone warning is enough and the ghost leviathans sound is not very easy to hear
and then the panicked alarm of the submarines damage level getting to critical ommgmg!! >>>>

De-intensifying a sound : In FNAF security breach
When you're being chased by Moondrop, you're not their first priority. It's more important for them to clean up the mess you made. So, your only chance of survival, as stealth isn't an option, is to knock down as many things as you can to buy time in order to activate the 5 emergency generators. So if you hear their creepy voice, saying, with an angry tone, « Clean up...! » then you're safe. But if you hear their sweet voice saying « Goodnight » then you haven't made a big enough mess, and you're their next target. You need to jump down, making you vulnerable, to knock something down so you have time to knock something else down. The animatronic is faster than you, but it cleans up slower and you clean down faster. So, hearing « Clean up...! » means you still have enough time. However, if instead you hear, say, « Bad children should be punished ! » then you instantly know that you've got to run.
I don’t think you understand what denintensifying a sound means.
Yet fnaf 1 power out is still more terrifying than almost the entirety of fnaf sb. This is because fnaf sb doesnt force you to completely focus on sound, however fnaf 1 does. An example of this is Freddy's laugh or the pots and pans in the kitchen. What makes it even more effective is red hearings, they can make you lose focus on the stuff you SHOULD be focusing on and that is why fnaf 1 (made in 2014) is better than fnaf sb (2022)
The term your looking for here isn't de intensifying, but this is something I hadn't noticed. Thanks for pointing this out! This will make Moondrop's area easier
@@thebeatleswin1 what they're talking about is a reverse intensity. Moondrop's calm voice means you need to mess with things, and the intense, angry voice means you're safe and have ample time to keep going.
The moondrop fight was so braindead lmao if you just knock everything over as fast as you can the AI keeps queueing them up so you can basically just loop the boss and get an easy win

also scruffy: starts teaching sound intensity by using the warning signals of said robots as examples
god bless you scruffy, putting your little minimalist-drawn life on the line for our understanding of a nearly entirely obscure subject
This is legit one of the best vids i've ever seen on youtube
11:43 Helpy's eyes actually moved to look at you. Subtle detail that many people probably overlooked.
Thank you for that bit at the end, about those without access to sound. I think that's a really important sentiment to consider, and point out to those who don't- especially game developers
Its so weird how I trusted you when you said "there is no jumpscare"
Normally to me thats an indicator that there IS a jumpscare, yet I still believed you for some reason
it's because scruffy is the nicest man on earth
If someone upsets scruffy they messed up bad
'you'd need a lot of luck to complete fnaf 4 and sl without focused listening'
me, with good hearing but auditory processing disorder: [chuckles] im in danger
SAME BAAHAHHAHAHAH
It mostly cancels out due to me having extra sensitive hearing to any sudden noise shift b/c trauma though. Even if I can't process what the sound is, I can tell its different, and i will act accordingly.
If you need to recognize what the sound is saying though, ill fail miserably
Lol idfk what do you mean but i guess i have one also and it fucking hurts me like some springlocked suit
I know this came out a year ago, but the alarm noise around 4:50 only occurs when there's an animatronic in the hallways. There are noises indicating that animatronics are in the vents, but they're deeper and sound more like someone banging on a hollow surface
His videos are so easy to watch at night with that black and white theme. You're a true one
Thanks for analyzing the sound in the series!

I just realized that his little character's hair is basically brackets, which fits even more with his whole theme
and his glasses (i think those are glasses) are square brackets
I could probably come close to making his face, let me give it a shot...

Can we take a moment to just... appreciate the quality of these videos? The sound, the animation, the script, everything. I would love to play a long, creepy, inde, point and click game with their art.
I like that he actually sounds slightly afraid the entire vid
Scruffy is adorable here. Especially how he changes his voice to sound scared. It sounded like he was really scared which is great acting.
Good job
he actually does

This is such a great video! The little 'story' of you explaining this to us so the animatronics didn't get to you was amusing, the visuals were great, the intro was funny, and all of the information was detailed and interesting. I also loved that you added the bit at the end about accessibility. I've never played the FNAF games myself because I'm a wimp (lol) but I love watching people like Markiplier play them. FNAF 4 was impossible for me to even watch because I'm hard of hearing and therefore missed all of the audio cues. Mark would freak out and slam the door closed and I wouldn't know why. The jumpscares were coming from nowhere! The other games had a better contrast and I could hear things well enough that I knew what was going on, but I still know that discerning them all in real time and reacting based on that would be extremely difficult
I like to imagine part of the video's lore being that the animatronics really _did_ slow their approach to Scruffy directly because he was doing the explaining.
the one thing I didn't like about FNaF 4's sound mechanics, is the fact that to hear the breathing, you had to crank your volume really high, and if you failed to hear the breathing and make a poor judgment call, then you would be blasted by a very, very, loud scream that I swear, if wearing headphones, would give you hearing damage
That's what makes it amazing.
To have your best chance of surviving, you must risk the intensity of the thing you fear the most.
The sounds intensity is increased. Thus making the experience FAR more tense.
I would honestly put an audio limiter on to deal with it.
@@trulyinfamous An audio limiter? That sounds promising
@@coleprovost6973 i’d rather not risk damaging my hearing for a video game 💔
@@coleprovost6973 that doesnt make it amazing that makes it physically damaging lmao, that isnt good design
I've watched so much 21st century humor that i just straight up associated stupid repetetive memes with the 4:44 sound so it makes me chuckle every time i hear it.
Yeah it made me forcefully exhale through my nose
I didn’t even know that was a FnaF sound
the balloon boy sounds are especially egregious in that way
I can hear the “Lebron James
@@BurningSands_FGC I can hear the Samsung notification sound everytime that alarm plays
It's probably worth mentioning that FNAF is made even more intense by effectively forcing you to wear headphones and increase your volume to listen for sound queues, so getting jumpscared is only more undesirable due to how loud it'd be. Especially true for FNAF 4.
6:19 this 2 second animation is needlessly incredibly detailed
11:34 anyone else notice when he turns back from the vents helpy is looking at him
that’s horrifying

What do we learn from the FNAF series?
FNAF 1: Pay your power bills on time
FNAF 2: Never be at the workplace alone
FNAF 3: Sketchy electronics are dangerous
FNAF 4: Don't bully your peers/siblings
FNAF 5: Don't listen to or follow strangers
FNAF 6: Don't collect trash as an everyman.
UCN: Hippos are truly terrifying animals
FNAF SB: don't get locked in a mall
FNAF HW: Remember to take a break from playing in Virtual Reality
FNAF SB: Watch your back.
@@DunkleCobro yall forgot the AR Game although there isnt much to learn.

"No jumpscares"
That is why this video is kinda scary even without them. Scruffy makes the scary emotion in his voice this whole video and we can hear weird sounds, which are the reason of (for me) the uneasy feelings.
The sound from the Fnaf 2 cutscenes (3:54) has to be one of the most sinister and unnerving sounds in the Fnaf series as a whole.
this and when they spell out stuff in the minigames i didn’t know they were letters for ages but the sound haunts me
It sounds like a weird duck
and then it jumpscares you at the end.
even with all the new games i still agree with you, its scaryer than its newest instalment if im honest

And his blanket
@@randompersonontheinternet6312 aint the purpose of a blanket to keep you warm why tf would you want it cold
JD YT
Think about how on a hot night, you might throw your blanket off. I know a lot of people only can sleep with a blanket on(probably just association). So when it is a hot night it can be difficult to stay in the blanket.
@@alexandramcginnis8872 But then also think of the alternative when your toes are cold as hell, you are shivering and unbelievably uncomfortable making it nearly impossible to sleep until you heat back up. At least with a hot blanket theres an immediate fix for it which is to throw off the blanket or do what I did as a kid and sleep under the sheets instead lol.
@@JDYT6969 I meant cool, not cold. There's a difference, and everyone knows that cool blankets are comfy
