========= Lady Of The Dark LYRICS ==========
Who shall be remembered, In the ancient House of war?
All the medals, all those stories, In the Alley of the greats
Celebrated hero, who has wandered through the dark
She stand before you, all that metal shining bright
Lost in time, returning to the light
Bow before, this lady fights for life
    So sister
Raise your hand, For the lady of the dark
Soldier with no will to kill, with a philanthropic heart
Forever break the norm, She’s the girl in uniform
Fighting side by side with men, she will fight until the end
Lied to be respected, and to change her brother’s fate
Took a bullet, earned her freedom, and a place among the stars
Served the Iron squadron, served the toughest of them all
No fear of dying, for the frontline she was born
Sacrifice, she took her brother’s place
War to war, a place where she belongs
    So brother
Don’t fear the reaper, don’t fear the war
She spared the life of brothers
    She’ll fight for honour
    She’ll fight for life
    A lady goes to war

Milunka Savić was a Serbian war heroine who fought in the Balkan Wars and in World War I. She is the most-decorated female combatant in the recorded history of warfare. In 1912, her brother received call-up papers for mobilization for the First Balkan War. She chose to go in his place-cutting her hair and donning men's clothes and joining the Serbian army. She quickly saw combat and received her first medal and was promoted to corporal in the Battle of Bregalnica. Engaged in battle, she sustained wounds and it was only then, when recovering from her injuries in hospital, that her true sex was revealed, much to the surprise of the attending physicians. Savic was called before her commanding officer. They didn't want to punish her, because she had proven a valuable and highly competent soldier. The military deployment that had resulted in her sex being revealed had been her tenth. But neither was it suitable for a young woman to be in combat. She was offered a transfer to the Nursing division. Savic stood at attention and insisted she only wanted to fight for her country as a combatant. The officer said he'd think it over and give her his answer the next day. Still standing at attention, Savic responded, "I will wait." It is said he only made her stand an hour before agreeing to send her back to the infantry. In 1914, in the early days of World War I, Savić was awarded her first Karađorđe Star with Swords after the Battle of Kolubara. She received her second Karađorđe Star (with Swords) after the Battle of the Crna Bend in 1916 when she captured 23 Bulgarian soldiers single-handedly. She was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur (Legion of Honour) twice, as well as the Russian Cross of St. George, the British medal of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael, and the Serbian Miloš Obilić medal. She was the sole female recipient of the French Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 with the gold palm attribute for service in World War I.

It reminds me of a heroine also from my country, Brazil, called Maria Quitéria de Jesus, she was the first woman to enter the armed forces in 1822 against the Portuguese, using her brother-in-law's name and pretending to be a man, her identity was revealed, but Major Silva e Castro did not allow her to leave the troops because of her facility with weapons handling and discipline in battle, Maria Quitéria had no schooling, but was experienced in hunting and fishing, as well as in the management of weapons.
Unlike the girls of her time, she was independent and contradicted society's standards.
After adopting her real name, Maria Quitéria changed her male uniform for skirts and accessories. Her courage in joining a male environment caught the attention of other women, who joined the troops and formed a group commanded by Quitéria.
With the defeat of the Portuguese troops, in July 1823, Maria Quitéria was promoted to cadet and recognized as a heroine of Independence. Dom Pedro I gave her the title of “Knight of the Imperial Order of the Cruzeiro”.

Pop history has, sadly, oversimplified things too much in many areas. And considering the breadth of human history you can't even blame schools for having to truncate it down, but sadly it leaves far too many assuming that things were ironclad and universal. So, if you wanted to write a movie about it, you'd probably get a big "Uh-huh, sure, a woman fighting in the trenches in WWI... yeah, BS." wheras with Wonder Woman it's explicitly (superhero) fantasy so on paper Suspension of Disbelief works, whereas with Miss Savic it's real and also does not match the average person's knowledge of what happened.
And to be honest, even the stuff that is within the 'popular consensus' gets vastly oversimplified and genericized to the point where it's not even the most interesting parts of it.

She had one biological daughter and also adopted 3 abandoned children, even though she was a single mother working a low paying job. During Nazi occupation in WW2 she refused to attend a local ball, although she was asked specifically, she refused on the grounds that German military officers would be there. My friend i will tell you some of my opinions, and opinions of other Serbs, now please i beg you don't take offense, that is not my attention, but here is what we as Serbs fail to understand, it is something we notice, not only in the past but even today, there are some Croats that love the Germans more then their own roots, Serbs have seen Croats as equal to them, we never tried to put our self's above you, nor did we ever feel below you, what we fail to understand is how can you love the Habsburg's how thought of you as blow them, and think of us as below you, just yesterday i say a post from a Croat saying that Serbs are "trash" and that Croats are better because they were under Austria, aren't we as Slavs roots of the same tree, how can you love your foreign master more then your brother, that was always our question, since 1914 many Serbs have asked why do Croats choose the German over us, after WW1 we swallowed it, we told our self's, well they were forced in to the Austrian Army, now we are one country now they are free and with us, But WW2 came, and NDH then Jasenovac, Stara gradiška, Jadnovo, and we as a people didn't know how to feel, in 1945 we were all part of the same country again, but we still had a bitter taste in our mouth, it was held together for a time but 1991 came around, and the fights. The call for Croatian independence, and well, the Serbs in Croatia decided to Rebel, that war wasn't really started by Milošević or Tuđman, it was the Serbian people who rose up, the thing is that back then there were still people around who remembered WW2 and what was done, they remembered WW1 when their grandfathers were running to join the Serbian army, the Croats were signing up for the Austrian one, the Serbs in Croatia just had to many bad memories in 91, they felt they were going to relive what happened in NDH, so they took up arms, that's how that war started, and well in 95 there was Oluja, and the exodus of the Serbs, so they were still right in a way, and well, we are sorry, but most Croats are not, and i still see Croats blaming Serbs for i don't even know what, like we are fabricating what happened in WW1 we are making up numbers of victims of WW2 (even tho we are not the ones who counted them) we are to blame for the 90's, i see lots of Croats bashing Serbs, for reasons pulled out of a hat, still saying Croats are civilized and Serbs are barbarians, and wishing they were part of Croatia, and praising America, and well that is why we will never be brothers, not because we don't feel equal to you, and not because we don't like you, we actually want to be your brothers, but the sad troth is most Croats will always choose the west over the Serbs, even tho to them we are no different. Again, i hope i am not offending you, that is just how things look.

      @@JackSmith-ky8uo Wrong statement.
It is not how Serbia pays for its heroes, it is how communism forbids Serbia to pay its heroes. It is not the same. In communist Serbia, you could not praise any Serbian national hero. You didn't learn about those people in school. There were no movies, no monuments, etc. Only Serbs couldn't go freely to a church. Serbs were systematically cut into pieces. New nations were born in Serbian national bodies, that never existed before. If you look closer at the percentage of the victims of Goli Otok you will see that a huge amount were Serbs. Almost all. The biggest repressions were done to Serbs. After the German occupation, Serbs went to communist occupation. Today we are occupied by the USA. We need a fourth uprising.

I can't help but notice a lot of similarities between the story of Milunka Savić and Mulan from the 1998 animated disney movie, both of them disguised themselves as men to take the place of a male relative, and even after the truth was uncovered they were still able to prove they were more than qualified to fight alongside men in battle, and became legends of their respective countries.
