========= The Valley Of Death LYRICS ==========
Dug in deep, equipped for attack
    Outnumbered, determined to win
Double trench lines that won’t give in
They’re prepared let the battle begin
Here again they’ve done this before
A lesson that they should have learned by now
Reinforced with new men and guns
Who are ready for death when it comes
United they’re strong, united they’re holding the line
The Valley of Death, awaiting the British as they come their way
Their attack is coming fight them back
    Bulgarians holding the line
Facing wave after wave, will never surrender
    Again, again, again, again
They attack, Bulgaria held them back
    Unleash their counter barrage
Let it rain artillery pounding the trenches
No surrender, fight them till the end
    Fortified, and made to defy
    Protected by wires and guns
Troops as far as the eye can see
    They advance under Vazov’s command
Row on row, as they come from below
Twice they attack, twice they’re beaten back
Every time they try, they will die
Their line of defence is still intact
    For white, green and red
for the nation they’re fighting for
    The British are done
three times the defence of Doiran has been won
    ========= Historic Fact ==========
The Valley Of Death is about the Battle of Doiran where Bulgarian troops stood against a larger invading British force. Due to strong command and strong fortifications, they were able to hold the line.

Fun fact: The bulgarian army at Doiran was pretty pissed at general Vladimir Vazov, for making them dig trenches, and build bunkers for 6 months in the hot summer, instead of relaxing. The underground tunnels and bunkers they dug, were bigger than today's Sofia metro. In the end, it turned out to be the right call - the british shot more than 150 thousand artillery shells and lots of poison gas. Only 7 people died, because they lost their way, the rest were completely unharmed. When the british aproached the trenches they were expecting to find just bodies, but instead the whole 9-th Pleven division started pushing them back. After the war, when general Vladimir Vazov became mayor of Sofia, women would carry food to his office in gratitude for saving their sons and husbands - only 700 casualties after a battle like that.

One of the few foreign generals given mention in the british history books - general Vladimir Vazov. In 1936 he was invited to the victory celebration in London. When the Bulgarian delegation was passing, the British ordered "Flags down! General Vazov, the victor of Doiran is coming through!" Later Lord Milne greeted Vazov telling him he was honoured to meet him. Milne said he respected the bulgarian soldiers not only because they were tough, but because like the British, they fought like gentlemen.

Rastko Nosović Mate. The Serbian win at Dobro Pole had nothing to do with the Serbs and everything to do with the incompetence of the german high command which refused to give an order for counter attack.
The same goes for Doyran. When Bulgaria joined WW2 Serbia was completely annexed, and the Bulgarian push into Greece was very successful. The only reason Bulgaria didn’t completely take out Greece and Serbia is because th Germans wanted to leave one more front open so the brits and French would have to send more troops to the Balkans, this weakening them in the west.
Furthermore, Serbs and French outnumbered Bulgarians 5 to 1 at Dobro Pole.

Finally, someone acknowledged that my country exists and did something in WW1. WW1 video games like Battlefield 1 completely ignore the fact that Bulgaria took part in WW1, and WW1 documentaries I've seen make it sound like WW1 was just Germany against everyone else with maybe Austria-Hungary mentioned here and there. After not hearing a single song about Bulgaria in Sabaton's last WW1 album, I thought that they too will completely ignore the fact that my country took part in the Great War, but they didn't and this makes me happy. This album as whole is phenomenal, great job Sabaton, and thank you for making a song about Bulgaria.

1917 year : Over 330,000 British, French and Serbs attacked the Bulgarian positions on the front near Doiran. The ninth infantry Pleven division of General Vladimir Vazov fought in the most difficult section. At the decisive moment, the Bulgarians rose in a knife attack ... and won. Another interesting fact is that the Bulgarian army has never lost a battle flag.

For hindreds of years we were at the meet point of a lot of empire (Roman, ottoman, Mongolian, Russian, Hungary and, Austrian, Polish, Bulgarian) and we survived, it's not only about the betrayals here (like for France is not only about the surrender) and we need to understand that in modern days we need to be united.

Second of all, saying that Romania is "part of Hungary" is the equivalent of saying Canada is part of Russia or sum. The only land you fellas owned was Transylvania and that's it (with Romanian majority in it but nevermind) (yes I can prove we were majority in there). And last but not least, "betrayed our friends", how? When? I've heard so many times how we changed the side in ww2, but do you even know why we did that? I'll let you find out by telling you some key words, Ion Antonescu, Russians coming over, Communists coming at power, Fascists falling. Don't talk about history if you don't know it

I will not join, fight or take lives ever & not support political propaganda's/corporatacracies, then there would never a war period. The global masses can be quite formidable & unstoppable if everyone with a good heart unites as one! If no one on earth "civilians" will never, ever support the national elites evil system, then it will fail & they're demise will come much quicker.. I'm sure I have family who did some pretty horrific things to Poles, and yet, as a Russian, I can walk down any street in Krakow, Gdansk, or Warsaw, wearing a Russian army uniform, and no one will care. Louis-Emil Eyer was born in 1865 in Switzerland and came to Bulgaria at the invitation of the Bulgarian ruler to found, together with several other Swiss, the sports movement and sport education. When the Balkan wars and the First World War began, he volunteered at the front and became the commander of some of the toughest units in the Bulgarian army. He died at Doiran as a Bulgarian officer holding two crosses for bravery. In his honor there is a Bulgarian-Swiss society today, streets in Sofia, stadiums, and Bulgarian scientists in the Antarctic have named a peak in his honor in the Ellsworth Mountains.

My grandmother used to tell me a saying: a woman who has not given birth is not a woman, and a man who has not been a soldier is not a man! That's what my grandmother used to say.
She was 80 years old, I used to laugh a lot when I asked her what my grandfather was like as a soldier at the front, and she used to tell me: he was an altalaris(artilleryman).
She used to make me laugh. She told me a lot about her father, he was in the battle of Doiran and survived.
I know some details from grandma: he was in General Vazov's famous 9th Division.
He used to say: - we were 6 chains and the British-French were 18 chains.
We were very scared and just then we heard a priest singing somewhere in our ranks. Some of ours were crying.
Then our field cooks appeared, carrying kegs full of brandy(Bulgarian rakia) . They poured 300 grams of brandy into each soldier's canteen.
"When I drank it, my head went numb. At the same time they had brought the military music behind our ranks, and I was in the front row the third fighter after the lieutenant.
The music blared out 'National Anthem of the Tsardom of Bulgaria' and I felt my helmet lift from my hair. I unbuckled and began to growl at the rage rising in my chest.
As if in a dream, I heard the command, 'GUNS OOOUT'. But it was already in motion, we had started the attack almost without a command.
I could vaguely hear, somewhere to my right, the lieutenant roaring with rage and shouting, - 'NO PRISONEEERS'. Afterwards it was all like a dream, but I remember that no one shouted hurrah that day, only wild roars of anger.
We were hungry then too, after the battle it was a common thing to see a soldier sitting beside a dead Frenchman, or Englishman, and searching him for food, and they were carrying tinned food and other things we had never dreamed of."
That's what my grandmother used to tell me, and she kept saying, "he'd been through three wars and not a bullet hit him!"
Grandma passed away at the age of 86 in 1986.
    RIP Grandma!

As a Bulgarian - this song filled my heart with joy. I am proud with my great grandfathers. I have two of them that fought for our independency and freedom.
One of them died at the Bulgarian - Serbian war from the same period that the song describes. He was at the United States of America when the war broke out, but answered the call of duty and came back to fight and defend his motherland. He was shot and killed near our western border, fighting Serbian troops. (No hard feelings for the Serbians)
My other great grand father is Stoyan Malchankov - Voivoda (Voivoda means something like a captain in my language) - you can google him. There is a detailed wiki page about him.
Thank you for this song Sabaton! Amazing work!

As British born and bred I am so glad I heard this and read the story. So good to know there are fighters as good as we were (we aren't any more except Special Forces) who can fight for what they believe in against an invading army, and win.

Let us remember Doiran! Let it never happen again! Glory to the Bulgarian defenders and real respect to their enemies (British, French, and Greeks) that fought and died then. Charging trenches lines after so many failed attempts requires a lot of strength and courage! The Bulgarian soldiers buried with their own hands the bodies (2500) of their own foes after the battle.

Just read about the artillery barrage of the battle. The British fired 100,000 shells in four days. The Bulgarians retaliated by firing 10,000 shells in one hour. If my calculations are correct, the British fired 17 shells a minute, but the Bulgarians fired 166 per minute. What's even more impressive is that the British had around 110 mortars, whilst the Bulgarians had only 35

I'm sorry to say but if you remember correctly that is most certainly fake firing mortars with less than 5 seconds between each shot for an hour is impossible.

I don't think you will ever understand how important this was for us and how proud you made us feel. I don't know what to say except one big Thank you for making our hearts beat fast and our eyes see the light. I can't wait to see you in Bulgaria again. Be prepared to feel our love and appreciation.
