Thank you JR. When my cell phone went down, I honestly didn't miss it. Thanks to you I set up brackets for a 220 watt solar panel on my roof to power an Ecoflow generator for power outages. I'll use it to keep my chest freezer up and running. The only downside was when I fell off the roof getting back onto the ladder. At 70 I still bounce pretty good so I just got a few scratches and bruises out of it. I also set up a rooftop antenna for a 40 watt GMRS radio for backup communications.

Early 2000s when I had a Nextel flip phone, a buddy told me a combination of buttons to hit like a cheat code on a video game. It turned a function on where I was able to send and receive texts through a satellite link completely free. It worked great in the Michigan north woods. The next phone I got after that it didn't work and I've never heard of it since. I wouldn't be surprised though if there are little secrets like that still available. ✌️

Well, as an ex federal employee who had to use a sat phone during 9/11, they aren't always the best either. If it is raining and you have a lot of cloud cover, good luck getting a signal....it gets very frustrating no matter what kind of phone you can or can't use. BUT, during an outage and there are NO phones, that is your best bet!

Most cellular towers don't directly connect to satellites in space. Towers are usually connected to a data center via underground cables (fiber optic cable these days.) That allows it to send and receive data to and from the data center (IP communications) Connecting each tower with a cable could be costly, especially in rural areas. Some towers have microwave antennas to backhaul to a network access point with fiber backbone to larger data hubs.

After Hurricane Maria there was virtually no cellphone services on the island for several days and even afterwards it remained spotty for several months as the hurricane truly wrecked the mountainous backbone of the island where most cell towers were strategically located for obvious reasons and during those first days after landfall Ham Radio operators became the main source of communications.

We have had a satellite phone (Garmin InReach) for 3 years and are very happy with it. Our off-grid property has no cell service and we frequent remote trails. I’ve never had a problem sending a text or email from the phone, which also gives the recipient our GPS location. The sat maps have also been very helpful and load even in heavily wooded areas. The $11 monthly fee is worth every penny.
