ARE YOU REFERRING TO BAGS OF POOL SHOCK?
BTW PROONE WATER FILTERS FIT BERKEY, I JUST BOUGHT TWO, AND THEY ARE NSF CERTIFIED. TC
Thank you JR. I want you to know how much I appreciate all you are doing for us. I might be an old man, but I know that all the rice and beans in the world won't help without water.
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Water is life. Learning how to make and use a solar still is a big plus for those that live near the coast.

Hi from Sweden. We harvest rainwater and I purify using the following methods: I filter it through cloth first into a large pot, then boil it for three minutes (altitude). I use the kitchen cooker for that but also have a working woodstove if no electricity is available and if need be, will use a fire outdoors. I have a two-bucket set up..the top bucket contains layers of fine sand, clean gravel and activated charcoal, each layer separated by cotton fabric. I pour the cooled, boiled water into the top of this and it trickles through and filters down into the bottom bucket via holes in the base of the top and in the lid of the bottom one. In winter, when it doesn't rain, we process snowmelt in the same way, though of course it takes much more snow to make a boilable pot of water than it does rain.
As back ups, I store (short term) bleach, water purification tablets, a portable filter straw and of course, more activated charcoal.
I have Seychelles water filter pitchers and an Alexapure Pro (big boy)! And, a natural spring runs in front of the 🏠. I'm set, don't worry about the old lady in East Texas! Maybe my kids will be glad I do. Much love 😊❤😊❤😊
Thanks for watching Bobby!
I love how you use a pillowcase as a pre-filter. Excellent suggestion!
Thank you!
Thank you for showing people that no one filter is enough to make water safe and that filtration and purification aren't the same thing! I stock up on zero water filters because they are the best when it comes to PPM without having to use any electricity or fuel but the water does in fact still need to be boiled or treated with bleach. I love how you break that down and make it super clear to people who might not fully understand. I have to get better at explaining that.
My friend was stationed in Dubai and stopped in India a few years back. He said people would literally do all their business in the river, then only a few feet down someone would be washing thier clothes or filling up a bucket of the poo water for cooking/drinking.
Even thiugh i live in America, i now use a reverse osmosis system because it grossed me out so much.
Thanks for watching!
I live near the sea and so, as well as the fresh water purifaction set ups (including the low priced virus removing "pure clear life filter" straws), I have a simple portable desalination set up. Simply made from Stainless steel funnel (which goes over the container to be heated) and a copper coil held in place at the neck end using a champagne cork with a small hole in it. Have tested and it works a very well (salinity tested using voltmeter and taste).
Get barrels to catch rain. Use for flushing . Boil for bathing. . Drinking water ,I am gonna look for a creek or spring .
Thanks for watching!
Well, I am so glad I’m on the septic, so it’s not going to be disposed of inappropriately
Thank you JR for you informational survival series, I rally enjoy your no beat around the bush straight forward advise. When SHTF occurs I'll be more than ready. The only problem is trying to find a trustworthy survivalist close to my location. Not a problem, being a Lone Alpha Wolf. Thank You for your series.
Thank you David!
Hey JR! This is great info, and many ways I could have clean water. I bought a Zero water counter top filter to use every day since our water is weird. However, I also keep stored water so if I feel uneasy about it, I can run it through my Zero Water system and feel like it's safe. I have stashed the Sawyer filters since you suggested those a long time back. I appreciate you and your info! Take care!
Thank you Millie!
Thanks for another great video & all your hard work. 😊
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I appreciate all the great information you put into your videos. Thank you so much.
Water is one of things i'm concerned about the most!
A special piece of equipment I never see mentioned, one obvious reason most are made of cast iron and are very heavy. But if your homestead/hunkered down in place and have a existing shallow well...get you a Ole school Pitcher pump, have several packing for replacement and or leather to cut some. Tractor Supply is a good source to purchase one.
Chlorox does have a dry crystalline bleach that they market. It has an indefinite shelf - life and I find it very handy even for every-day use.
Thank you JR! Always a great video.
Thank you, JR! Another great video.
I love my Berkey. I have had it for 5 years now 👍🏻
For international travels, I bring my small Berkey and Sawyer mini.
Thanks for watching Julia!
Very helpful well thought out video. Thank you for your honest opinions and teachings on how to purify water
you are one of the most thorough!
My porta-potty at me campsite is the 1st step in an outdoor loo/outhouse. Eventually I will build walls around it but for now I have beautiful 360° scenery for my morning glory 😅
Thank you for your videos.
Good video! Thank you
Thanks James for this update mate.
You're welcome Rodney! Thanks for watching!
Great video and thank you for the demo!!! I'm sort of new to prepping, demos are much appreciated

I have fermenter, have 2 set up in kitchen, fill up with rain caught water, looking at putting something on the tank
Owning a home with a pool is great. Holds so much water. Looking to buy consider it
Great video... covered everything that I could think of.
Thank you Brandon!
Good video!
Good knowledge
We have s versl Zero Water and extra filters. We also bought two hand pumps fur both our wells. We have a natural spring fir an other source if water. We live out in the country
I am not connected to the city. I have a well with a Culligan filtration system. I still refilter at the tap. I also have the means to function with the grid down. My preps do have those little pills to sterilize. JR, great topic. Thank you.
Thank you Robert!

thanks for all the great videos
Thank you for watching them!
Thank you for Ecoflow👍
Most township water storage tanks refills overnight....every day.....so always have water put back because water is so important...don't forget hydration tablets or powders.....protien powder for quick energy.....
I have always insisted to my family that water is a treasure. So, I have now opened up a long ago sealed well, and acquired several different water filtration systems. We won't go thirsty. Although, we might stink a little. LOL!! We have the rainwater
capture system for washing up. Stay well, brother!
Thank you Karl!
@@diypreppertv And thank *YOU,* JR!! Best wishes and stay safe!
Please test your well and chlorine’s if needed
@@femvetusa5263 I do appreciate your advice, and yes, I have several test methods available to me, and the required decontamination materiel. (I'm a retired engineer.) All is good! Best wishes to you, and thank you for your concern!
@@kbjerkewish I had someone to build our system
Good solid info as usual thanks DIY Prepper
I've been experimenting with uvc lights in the spa (obviously only before and after use) with success. It keeps the water fresh and I don't get burned with chemicals now. You may want to considder uvc light as another stage, just don't look at them when in use.
Buy yourselves a Sillcock key to access water from large buildings, malls, businesses. Usually outside on the side of the buildings. May be covered with a little panel. Sillcock key will unlock it. It will open the water ways. Even without electricity.
A Steripen UV light is another good tool to have in your water purification arsenal… It’s effective against protozoa, viruses and bacteria including cryptosporidium and giardia.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Absolutely. I used to use one when traveling to Africa. It worked very well, and should be part of one’s backup systems for a severe disaster. The Grayl is superior for short-term use because it also filters out industrial chemicals but their filters only last a short time, even with pre-filtration.
Cool video thanks.
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
I've been working on modifications to my chimney style charcoal lighter as a rocket stove
That sounds cool!
Depending on source and available time, a settling tank can help save your filters. Just let water sit in a bucket for a while so that sediment can settle to bottom of bucket. Pour, siphon, scoop or otherwise get top water without taking gunk from bottom. Some contaminant float. If you see anything on surface such as oil slick or soap scum this may not be an acceptable water source but you can reduce concentration by discarding top layer from settling tank.
Yeah, man…. Good stuff to know.✝️🇺🇸👍🏻
Thank you Ronald!
@@diypreppertv even Aquaman could learn something from this video today.👍🏻
I have that Jurassic Park shirt! :D We got some Berkey filters this year and plan to get creative with buckets to make a poor man's Berkey in the event of another major hurricane. I hope it wouldn't come to that, because it would mean we had already been a whole month without some kind of disaster relief.
Thanks for watching Rina!
You could also save the charcoal from your campfires because charcoal is a natural filter
You can use a large garbage bag and wrap it over a clump of leaves growing from a healthy tree. It will give you enough water after a couple of hours to drink and it is pure.
One of the things in my Preps for water is a set of Mist nets. I live in a very dry but weirdly foggy part of the country and looking at "water resources" I realized, after years, that I was missing such an obvious source 😂😂 made me blush I tell you.
Yay for 10,000 gallons on gravity feed for just me and my dogs, no appliances
Thanks for watching!
People not only need to figure out the water issue but learn how to build a composting toilet as well.
Boiling kills everything then put through a filtered system.Sand and Charcoal and also natural terracotta pots also filter water just as good as any Charcoal filtered systems.
If there is nitrates in the water, boiling concentrates it.
I recommend powdered bleach. Longer shelf life vs bottled liquid chlorine.
Also, for those interested in longterm solutions when you must rely on your own resources, look up on yt videos/instructions for MAKING chlorine bleach! From sea water and a car battery I believe. Chlorine bleach in bottled eventually turns into water I believe.
Water is the single most important aspect of living, even above food itself. I am monitoring the lawsuit, but I am concerned about other things as well. I have a lifestraw, but I also noticed the new one. At this point, just a nod to it.
How can a faucet water filter attachment be used without a sink and faucets?
Thanks JR. In the event of a radiation fallout, how long until we can drink water from a shallow well about 20 feet deep?
solar powered watetr pumps on wells this will fix this but even clear water in rivers just boil it pack life straws also just in case
@diypreppertv are you in League City? You show the water tower there often. I’m right up the “street!” What things do you plant here in Texas in august and September?
Great video! Would Clearly Filtered remove most everything?
If you have a 45,000 gallon covered pool
Or any sized large pool at your residence
Not salt water pool
You have a good source of water
Just add purification ✌️
Anyone know where I can get reliable and trustworthy water filtration anything helps thanx
It won't be long now....hold fast fellas...
What if I live in a rural area and I have a well?
What do we do if we cannot afford Burke systems etc
Consider a turkey fryer with a pot with a spigot for large quantities of water without chemical impurities for family sized water needs. Great for heating water for bathing too. Use 1-1.5 gallons hot water to 2 gallons cool water in a bucket. Use a large cup to toss water over yourself (in a shower or tub that still drains) to wet, shampoo (use less product!), rinse, body wash and rinse. You can use a little hydrogen peroxide in the water to make sure you are clean.
Using a small bucket with clean water helps with lathering a wash cloth, keeping the water soap free and rinsing personal bits with a soap free washcloth. This conserves water for a large bath /shower in between small daily washing with a sink of water or small bucket with a smidge of gentle baby soap and a little hydrogen peroxide. Try both methods!
Are there filters that remove chemicals ?
So in a true emergency situation where I don’t have any of that stuff is simply boiling water for about 3 minutes enough for it to be safe?
As we live on island uk 🇬🇧 we find it hard to use a river that has not been contaminated buy farmers its not there fault as they need to use chemicals for growing food for the public. But I live in a town centre so rain water is dirty but we also have nowhere to store water. So tinned food is the only solution for preparing for a long time war please advise thank you
Write a servival book on all you know $$$$$
Thanks Michael!
Someone on CZcams did a video on a water filter called Pro One. This fits in the Berkey water system.
Use a plastic tarp to catch the dew.
I bury my poo.
Any suggestions on bottled water that is starting to have a plastic taste.
I would only store a small amount of bottled water and use it within a month or two, rotating what you have.
@diypreppertv too late...lol...I started out storing it. I am now circling through it but am finding in some a different taste. Not all.
If your bottled water is in a cool dark place out of the light, then your bottles are probably off gassing. I wouldn't drink it. You could use it for washing dishes, bathing, cleaning. Sorry, if you stored a lot. The off gassing, can't be boiled off.
We have the same problem. I've had some good success with putting it thru a Brita filter. I then put the filtered "bottled" water in half gallon glass canning jars. Hope this helps!
So if boiling could exacerbate chemicals in the water when it be smarter to run the water through a charcoal filter before boiling it
If you boil, do you really need the Sawyer?
Hey JR, Question: I have water stored in 55 gallons in my garage that i filled from the faucet. Should I treat it as a whole or as im using it? Thanks
Tap water should store for a while since most of it’s chlorinated. As long as there aren’t any signs of algae growth, running it through a Berkey or Zero water should be fine. If you’re worried about it though, you could always just treat it as you use it.
I have been using tap water for years. I just boil it before drinking.
@@cristinasumadchat605That’s what I do!
Glad to be a well living person
I have a bathtub bob/water bob that I want to fill, especially with all of the nearby fires of late.
Do I treat it when filled from the tap before or when I go to use it?
If you fill it when there isn’t a boil water notice, it should be fine.
@diypreppertv Thank you! Water is currently good, albeit it's hard water but that one thing I wasn't sure about kept me from filling it up. I love that I can close the top since we have cats and I don't want fur to be the filter.
Thank you so much. I have water anxiety after the town water supply became contaminated in the Camp Fire. We didn't have a home to go back to (or much of a town), but the situation lasted a long time after the fire.
Your reply gave me a goal for the day now. Thank you.
You’re welcome! Just remember those are things that you don’t fill up until you think you may need them. They’re only meant to be used for a few weeks.

Re the use of Bleach: our councils recently started fluorodating out water so I started on my water treated with bleach.... I found this gave my teeth high sensitivity... otherwise good video dude.
Waaaaay off topic but where did your wife find the owl on the countertop. Asking for a friend....
I think it was a housewarming gift that someone picked up at Cracker Barrel. That was in 2015, so your best bet may be eBay.
