This is the best lawn mower u will ever have I have one and I’ve done a lot with it, I’ve been missing with it multiple times and I just put a motorcycle exhaust on it today and I’ve also done a lot of tug of wars with it against my friends lawnmower. I just picked up 4 wheeling tires for it today

The greatest value/ Importance of the stack is to keep heat out of the engine bay, important for air-cooled engines.. looks great. Have to make sure it is mounted to something structural.
I wouldn't say that's the most important part I think the most important part is dont mount it the way he did you got to have that system on some kind of grommets or spring-type bracket if you notice the motor mounts themselves are on grommets so they can move a little bit if you have that exhaust mounted to the cylinder of that thing it's going to be to a fixed point he should at least have grommets or something because he'll end up breaking head bolts and causing all kinds of problems
The reason I'm here is that today, after spending hours installing and adjusting a new mower deck, and transferring the old wheels and wheel brackets to the deck, I was mowing, and I I got off to move a branch, but then I sat down again before the mower stopped, and it started up again, which caused a backfire, and the engine started on fire. I quickly removed the hood, and I was by our little cabin on the other end of our land, and the only thing I could find was a bottle of Fantastic spray cleaner. I put out the fire with this. So now, I need a new wiring harness, muffler and spark arrester. But now I'm thinking that a muffler like this would keep those sparks away from the engine as well. Oh, what caught on fire was all of the oily grass clippings coating so much of the engine and surrounding parts. I think from now on I'll keep all that cleaned off. Let that be a lesson to me!
Keep it. My brother has one on his sears suburban. You can buy a muffler for it for around $50 that will make it sound softer. We used a piece of flat steel and welded a socket to it for an adapter. It actually worked. Lol. It sounds neat the way it is though. Great video!!!!

I think it's too loud. There is way less back pressure. It's visually less tucked and compact. The exhaust system is a good idea ,but i would modify it only if it make it silent. You wanted to make muffler if i understood correctly That's a good idea,even if difficult on monocylinders to lower the sound level. I'm happy you use HD now,it's very nice for the eyes,specially when you are outside. : )
michaelovitch I'm glad you noticed the HD, honestly I didn't give it much thought because it always looked just fine on my computer. My primary reason for the upswept exhaust is to keep the hot exhaust out of the dry grass. My second objective is to make it quiet. I have a larger Stainless Steel can that will replace the smaller can. I think I can mellow out and quiet it down the sound...it's worth a try.
You could build a "real" absorption muffler out of that can with a tube inside it with lots of holes (same diameter as the rest of the pipe) and between the can and the tube put in steel or stone wool...that would deepen the tone and lower the noise. It also would help if the can is longer or had more diameter with the mod mentioned above.
Modor An Hey Modor, I agree that the can needs to be larger. I had operator errors with the camera, and didn't show the internal design, but the can has muffler glass packed in there. I'm digging around the hoard this weekend to locate a larger S.S. can to replace this one.

Looks pretty sweet, maybe a little tall for my tastes, but still awesome. I agree with you that its a little on the loud side, but then a again so is my AC 712 with a 12 horse single wanger Kohler. Your craftsman sounds a lot like my AC with the stock exhaust. I'm ready for the weather cap build.
***** This was a sound test, not a final fit-up. I agree that it's likely several inches too tall... and you know it will have a weather cap.... it just has to...lol.
When you install the larger can, keep the drink container. Move it up to the top of the stack and call it a 'resonator'. Tell your friends and neighbors you have a custom 'tuned' exhaust.
If you notice your motor mounts they are on rubber grommets they have movable connecting points.. The reason for that is because when your mechanisms do their job it needs to have a little bit of play in it if you are mounting your exhaust like that to where it's not movable without a grommet or a spring type bracket you're going to cause a lot of issues with that engine it's not going to be able to move possibly damaging the head or head bolts

I like it. Might be loud. Put a center pipe with large holes in it down the muffler and stuff it with fire proof insulation. Or buy the biggest tube muffler that will match your pipe but still fit in the water bottle.

I packed the can with glass, but I just think the can is just too small..I was married to that size can because it was Stainless Steel and that was the theme I was trying to go with. I don't really mind the loud aspect as long as it sounds good...I don't think it sounds good. I will be digging through the hoard this weekend and see what I can come up with to replace it.
Sounds like my grandpa's old massey harrison. Now put a soup can on the end to keep the rain out and watch it launch into the air when the engine fires up.

Honestly the exhaust blows well above my head. I would get more exhaust in my face with the stock exhaust, I have a follow up video where i replaced the small drink container "muffler" with a larger stainless steel can and it made a world of improvement in reducing the sound. it's called "Craftsman Stainless Exhaust Revisited" Thanks for watching.

I know it has been over a year, but I have a couple extra Screamin Eagle baffles from some angle cut SE mufflers you can have. I work on small engines also. Did you know the newer small engines with hydraulic lifters should run at higher RPMs and not idled much? Looks great tho!
I made a follow up video (Craftsman Stainless Exhaust Revisited) where I revisited the "muffler" situation and made it better. I was trying to use what I had laying around in my hoard, but believe me a motorcycle muffler would have worked quite well if I had one.
I think the the drink container is too small. A larger cylinder would drop the popping noise to a lower level as it would allow more expansion of the exhaust gasses before it exits the pipe. At least in my opinion.

This is the first completely stainless steel system I have built and I felt compelled to use that drink container to keep it all one material... You need a bigger can and maybe a larger exit. Enough to get some resonance from the sound waves hitting each other. I'm not exactly sure how to calculate it, I haven't messed around with one in a while.

That's was a sweetly built stack YBK but didn't look right on the newer unit, we gotta get you an old Suburban 12 to fit that stack a little bit better. lol
RooneysSears01 hahaha.. Rooney, I really like the look of the Suburbans and the starter/generator setup is pure genius. I have been keeping an eye out for one around me for a few years now and I have not been able to drag one home yet. I look at work like this as a warm up for the real tractors.
Did you put a vibration dampers between your bracket and the frame? You'll be courting cracking, perhaps on your motor's head if you aren't lucky, some other place on the exhaust if you are. Other than that, I love it. If you want to quiet it down, you can still weld a muffler flange to the end of your pipe. Attach any muffler that fits your flange.
Hey Ron, I did a two part follow up video ( czcams.com/video/wuq-maKZnqk/video.html )to this one where i put a different can and it made a HUGE improvement in sound level and tone. To date, I don't have any dampers. The engine is solid mount to the frame and the exhaust is solid to the frame and with around 75-80 hours on the tractor since this video, there have been no issues. I like this fabrication, it looks good but is a bit loud and staccato in tone. As well as idling lower does it rev higher? Like others I am concerned about the possible damage to the close-by wiring and possibly the starter. In addition we have had quite a bit of annoying damage to the exhaust pipework due to cracking caused by engine vibration. To combat this we have added short length of flexible exhaust pipe or rubber engine mount. This has helped a lot but is not a fool proof solution. It is good to see you moving around quite smoothly and easily with your knee injury.
Dan Whiteford Hey Dan, I don't like the tone at all. I am expanding my search for something that is Stainless Steel to make a larger diameter can and replace that drink container. The engine still has the governer so it does not rev any higher, but I was interested that it lowered the idle. it was a chore to weld that thin drink can to the thick pipe and I just bolted it up to test for sound before I made the welds pretty... I don't like the sound so I will be chopping that can out. Final assembly will definately include re-routed wiring and I like the suggestion for a heat shield for the starter.

I was struggling to get that thin can welded to the thick pipe and before I made the welds pretty I wanted to be sure I liked how it would sound...I don't...it will get chopped off and a larger SS can will replace it. Idk if you still got it but maybe try a little dirt bike muffler on the end of it seen a tik tok where a guy did it to a 15 horse and it sounded kinda cool
I think it is awesome, I have 16 hp apposed twin briggs in mine and tried a lot of ways to make a stack but it is difficult with the flat twin to mate the two pipes, so I end up by extending the stock forward facing single pipe and bring it with a 180 deg turn backwards and then up but looks so weird that I gave up. It sounds out of the world must say. Hope anybody can share how they do it

Run it right out the back, it wont be to loud if it's not right in your face. Plus they sound cool like that. Just my thoughts, but I'm also not a smart man.

I think its a great idea, it gets the fumes up and away from the operator, I hate breathing that stuff in while mowing. I'd build one if I had the skill and gear to do it.
Do you really want it at face level? A friend of mine used some kind of metal plumbing pipes when his muffler fell off to make the exhaust just go straight out the side. Same side as the grass nobody wants to be standing there anyway. It’s not obnoxiously loud and lets you really hear what’s going on with the engine, and if you are standing in the danger zone you can feel every put put put to tell what kind of compression it has

Hell yeah, keep it! If you want to make it quieter, look for a motorcycle muffler you can slip fit onto the pipe.

Hey Dan, I have put a TON of hours on this machine and never had an issue.
Wider diameter pipe = less back pressure = lower idle, just turn idle screw in a little bit to bring idle up.

u can make a baffle in your muffler then weld it back together u can also put some steel wool in it

Hide some baffles inside your water bottle thing to quiet down and deepen the sound a little that way you keep your custom exhaust look you wanted

make a baffle out of pipe to tune sound u can use a drill bit maybe 3/8 holes lots of them or find a cherry bomb

I could just sit here and wish or I could chop it up and try again....I vote to try again. Digging through the hoard this weekend to see what other (larger) stainless steel cans I have around..Stay tuned.
The funny thing is i can see you doing that lol.....hey if you can't find anything the dollar store had those stainless steel bottles you could tig weld a couple together and your only out a couple dollars. Good luck you know ill be watching

You need a bigger can and maybe a larger exit. Enough to get some resonance from the sound waves hitting each other. I'm not exactly sure how to calculate it, I haven't messed around with one in a while.
Nicholas Smerk Hi Nicholas, I am fixed as to what pipe size I can use, ( I will not purchase new pipe, but only use what I have on hand) but the can will definately be getting chopped out and replaced with something larger.

That's was a sweetly built stack YBK but didn't look right on the newer unit, we gotta get you an old Suburban 12 to fit that stack a little bit better. lol
RooneysSears01 hahaha.. Rooney, I really like the look of the Suburbans and the starter/generator setup is pure genius. I have been keeping an eye out for one around me for a few years now and I have not been able to drag one home yet. I look at work like this as a warm up for the real tractors.

Did you put a vibration dampers between your bracket and the frame? You'll be courting cracking, perhaps on your motor's head if you aren't lucky, some other place on the exhaust if you are. Other than that, I love it. If you want to quiet it down, you can still weld a muffler flange to the end of your pipe. Attach any muffler that fits your flange.
Hey Ron, I did a two part follow up video ( czcams.com/video/wuq-maKZnqk/video.html )to this one where i put a different can and it made a HUGE improvement in sound level and tone. To date, I don't have any dampers. The engine is solid mount to the frame and the exhaust is solid to the frame and with around 75-80 hours on the tractor since this video, there have been no issues. I like this fabrication, it looks good but is a bit loud and staccato in tone. As well as idling lower does it rev higher?
Like others I am concerned about the possible damage to the close-by wiring and possibly the starter. In addition we have had quite a bit of annoying damage to the exhaust pipework due to cracking caused by engine vibration. To combat this we have added short length of flexible exhaust pipe or rubber engine mount. This has helped a lot but is not a fool proof solution.
It is good to see you moving around quite smoothly and easily with your knee injury.
Dan Whiteford Hey Dan, I don't like the tone at all. I am expanding my search for something that is Stainless Steel to make a larger diameter can and replace that drink container. The engine still has the governer so it does not rev any higher, but I was interested that it lowered the idle. it was a chore to weld that thin drink can to the thick pipe and I just bolted it up to test for sound before I made the welds pretty... I don't like the sound so I will be chopping that can out. Final assembly will definately include re-routed wiring and I like the suggestion for a heat shield for the starter.
May need a heat shield by the starter and those wires there .
wtbm123 Hey Terry, I agree completely. I just threw this on to test the sound... I was struggling to get that thin can welded to the thick pipe and before I made the welds pretty I wanted to be sure I liked how it would sound...I don't...it will get chopped off and a larger SS can will replace it. I definately will re-route that wire and I think the starter heat shield is a great idea. Thanks!

I think it is awesome, I have 16 hp apposed twin briggs in mine and tried a lot of ways to make a stack but it is difficult with the flat twin to mate the two pipes, so I end up by extending the stock forward facing single pipe and bring it with a 180 deg turn backwards and then up but looks so weird that I gave up. It sounds out of the world must say. Hope anybody can share how they do it

Run it right out the back, it wont be to loud if it's not right in your face. Plus they sound cool like that. Just my thoughts, but I'm also not a smart man.
***** hahaha... I actually want to build an exhaust that runs out the back...I think that looks cool too....Just not for a machine I mow with...typically the last couple cuttings of the year are dry and I don't want the exhaust anywhere near the dry grass.

Thanks Grant, I did a follow up video where I replaced the small "muffler" can with a larger stainless steel can and it make a HUGE improvement over the level of exhaust sound... it's much more tolerable...truth be told I still wear ear plugs when operating any machine like this. I can handle loud...heck I always wear hearing protection regardless of the sound level..and I will be using it in an area where nobody will complain about it... I just don't like the way it sounds...I like the look of it exhaust, I just will chop out and fabricate a larger muffler to tone it down a bit. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!

This exhaust is still in use around trees and such and has never had an issue.
At 9:55 see what you did? I’m afraid you will probably do that when the pipe is cherry red hot after mowing. Otherwise great job of welding and design.

I would have run the pipe past your foot on the rhs and put of the back. With a heat shield or fiberglass to keep it cool.
Pack the water bottle with stainless steel pot scrubbers for quieter.

I think its a great idea, it gets the fumes up and away from the operator, I hate breathing that stuff in while mowing. I'd build one if I had the skill and gear to do it.

Do you really want it at face level? A friend of mine used some kind of metal plumbing pipes when his muffler fell off to make the exhaust just go straight out the side. Same side as the grass nobody wants to be standing there anyway. It’s not obnoxiously loud and lets you really hear what’s going on with the engine, and if you are standing in the danger zone you can feel every put put put to tell what kind of compression it has
