- Season 3 Episode 7. Jimbo installs an intercooler on the turbocharged Kubota D722 diesel engine in the Saturn coupe. Will the intercooler make a difference? Also Jimbo bumps up the boost from 8 psi to 10 psi... because MOOR BOOST! As a special treat Jimbo compares the Saturn's acceleration to a Trabant that is owned by another youtube creator.
Check out the Aging Wheels episode where the Trabant is tested

I think it's worth stating, lower intake temps will primarily serve to lower egts less than make more power. The intercooler probably gives you more room to increase the fueling before egts get crazy.
Yep. Just fitting an intercooler does nothing more than lower intake and exhaust temps.
Then you increase fuel and turbo pressure until the intercooler doesn't help anymore.
Then you mount a larger one. And then more boost, and then...
This is called the ''more boost'' syndrome. 😂
On 2-stroke race engines it’s 15-20 degrees IAT per jet size. That makes a significant change in power output.
Fuel does need to increase, but lower intake temperatures are the equivalent of more boost.
It's fascinating that so many people know better than Mr Robot, but have zero videos showing off that knowledge.

@@eriklarson9137 So what you are saying is that.. None of us have any kind of experience with this because we haven't uploaded a video ?
The diesel Saturn is almost matching East German levels of common man performance. I'm intrigued
Iirc the trabant did it's 0-60 run down a highway on ramp, so it had gravity helping.
Since your temp gauge has another spot, you may want to run another thermocouple back to the rear brakes so you can monitor the emergency brake temps. Good work on everything!
lol... yes that would certainly help.
Your microphone quality is impressive
his whole production quality is impressive for someone sticking lawnmower engines in a piece of shit car
One of the early videos he shows his setup. Apparently an old cheap PC and a 20$ USB microphone.
ive watched Rob Dahm build a 2000hp AWD 4 rotor rx7 and i can honestly say im more excited when i see another upload of this little red saturn every week. keep up the good work! you're doing amazing stuff out there!
If the sound of a 3 cylinder diesel interests you more than a 4 rotor Wankel engine then there is something wrong lol. However I know what you mean, Robs car is amazing but his videos are too long for me. I love the 10 minute episodes here and the humour 😊 I think we need an update on the Gnomes
Dahm is a little too excited to talk about damn near everything.
You should be able to add a smidge more fuel with the lower intake temps. Colder air is more dense than hot air and all of that.
Until he turned the boost up the egt warning was still coming on so its a balance.
@@ElPants21 he just added intercooler and made a cut, but didn't install a scoop. Colder, denser air - profit.
He can add more than a smidge.

I like how you call out the viewers. There are wayyyyyy to many "experts" on you tube comments.
Aging Wheels is a great channel. Robert does some really interesting things, and his sense of humor is awesome. This has been a very interesting project, keep the videos coming. 👍
I am glad that two of my favorite channels are at least aware of each other. I was hoping for an actual collaboration!
The WRX hood scoop has been shown to flow backwards at higher speeds. Generally, your engine bay ends up being a high pressure area. A forwards facing scoop means you don't have much delta in pressure across the top mounted intercooler. Now, your front bumper block will change the flow/pressure characteristics but the important thing is to maximize the pressure and temp deltas across your IC. Like many of the high performance WRX builds which kept their TMIC you likely want to go for a reverse scoop setup. - Additionally, the lack of a belly pan will alter your engine bay airflow and pressure characteristics. Typically, in a negative way. Plus there's additional aero drag from the aerodynamically dirtiest part of the car (the underside). Likely an easy way to make multiple improvements. The guides on ecomodder can be helpful. Same for tuft-testing the airflow around that TMIC which is a great way of showing your airflow patterns at various speeds. --- Keep up the very interesting work!
Came here for this. Make a scoop that looks like the old Camero cold air induction that faces the window. After about 35 MPH the air over the hood will get pushed down that intercooler.
Louvres would work for this purpose then and he wouldn't have to change his aero at all that way. As was discussed at length in his aero mod video, it's hard to modify the aero on a slippery car like the SC and actually improve it. Louvre the existing piece and weld it back into place if you're going to go that route IMO.
Just move it to FMIC.

It's actually very impressive to see how much that mini refridgerator unit diesel engine survive so much load and modification. Clearly the Japanese make good engines. Jimbo, love the content. Good stuff. This is what the internet was meant for, I think.
Thanks ! Yes, this little engine seems to be holding up well with an estimated power increase of 50%. I'm not sure how many other viewers actually realize that.

You should for sure add a small WRX style hood scoop, it might not be your "style," but I think it would look cool and increase the efficiency of that. You could also add some little pieces of plastic inside to guide the air directly atop the intercooler. I do recommend adding a little more fuel now, I think that engine can handle it. Then again, I feel like swapping that engine into the insight would be ideal at this point.
NACA duct! :)
If he does that it will add at least 40hp at the rear wheels and almost certainly get him a girlfriend.

Agreed. Hoods are made for air to go over the car, scoops are made to pull it in. Without a scoop, he should at least add 2 6-inch computer fans to pull air though the intercooler. Otherwise he’s just slowing down compressed air from the turbo.
Did not expect a Renault 10 to pop up at the end!

Some more test ideas. Attach some streamers around the hood hole/intercooler, I wager air is coming out not into the hole/intercooler. That tube and fin intercooler needs airflow across the core. A bar and plate style core would be better suited for that style as its much better at passively rejecting heat since your hood is vented allowing air out. Plus less pressure drop across the core with bar and plate. (not sure where your measuring boost from). in order for a hood sccop to actually work and create a high pressure area to promote flow. the underhood area would need to be low pressure so blocking the grill may be benefitial in that scenario. Happy testing!
Guessing the air direction is tough because right in front of the windshield tends to be a high pressure area, but so does the engine bay. I'd wager not much air is moving at all and it really needs a scoop and some simple ducting
@robert rochacz easy to see with some sticky notes or paper ribbons with tape. I would have probably suggested to have the scoop exit air instead of force it in the hood, but that could be an issue if the engine ever has a problem (smoke). So forced in is the only way, or close up the bonnet again, and use case fans.
@robert rochacz yeah Subaru has a shroud on the hood that seals to the intercooler and deliberately open space around the transmission and firewall to allow air to go down unfer the car. The air flowing under the car and seal from the scope to intercooler really aids pulling air through the intercooler.
Raising the cooler up into the cut out and sealing it to the hood might be a simple way to improve its function. Blocking off more of the front of the car should lower the pressure under the hood and might make it try and draw more through the hood also.
Like many others have said, cooler intake doesn't mean more power until you tune for it. Otherwise it's like putting high octane in my knock sensorless car - Unless I optimise the timing, all I'm doing is burning more money per mile.
That's really not how diesels work.
The reason for top mount intercooler is to avoid rocks from making holes in intercooler.
All the hugs! So here for this! We have all needed more hugs and love during these times, and it has just really proven to bring our family closer together. Our son says he is the cheese in the sandwich, and that my husband and I are the bread! If someone is having a tough time, inevitably someone says - sandwich time! - and we all get together for a hug.
This is for when families start traveling again. When my kids were little and we were traveling, I’d alway have them pick out some postcards along the way. (I purchased postcard stamps before the trip too.) Then when we were at a restaurant waiting for our meal, it was a great time for them to jot a quick note to grandparents or family back home or even a note to themselves!

I'm still amazed at how you can finish (and we all know what the word finish implies for a project car) one project and then immediately jump onto another
We stopped using the parking brake 30 years ago, because when you live in the snow, if you set your parking brake, there’s a good chance that the cable will freeze, then you have to climb under the car with a hairdryer in order to get it unfrozen!
You should do an end of season episode where you have someone interview all the neighbors in the area and see what they think of the crazy guy hotrodding a saturn and a honda insight. That would be interesting. On another note, i truly enjoy all of the engineering and experimentation you do.
I did not expect the Aging Wheels crossover today, but here we are!!
Fascinating engineering. The epic struggle of man vs. technology!
Once the Saturn can match the Trabant, you should see if you can convince him to take a break and meet you at a drag strip.
I'm normally not one to get bothered (anymore) by a missing screw like at 4:55, but it did make my day brighter
Oh come on, i was expecting harp sounds when you touched the intercooler 😂
you knocked off 3 seconds to 60 with 3 more pounds of boost - Not to shabby 🙂
Something I learned as I am messing with my first diesel, fuel makes more power- and that's the only thing that makes more power. More boost or colder Temps only reduce smoke, or let you add more fuel.
Add fuel till it smokes, add air till it stops, repeat until something blows up.
Another way to optimize the hole in the hood for the intercooler is to extend the vertical cuts and bend the leading edge of the hole down into the engine bay. The boundary layer of the air on the hood will better follow that path and get more air into the engine bay and over the intercooler. As you said, a scoop is better but until then this is a simple way to improve the hole as-is. Right now most the air is flying over half the opening of the hole and missing the intercooler, the benefit you are seeing is just allowing the surrounding cooler air into the lower pressure area in the hood.
Man, I love lil funky unique swaps; you don't need a bunch of power to how fun 👌
Really enjoy the Saturn Diesel Videos. I hope the car does not end up scrapped. It would make someone a great little commuter car. Looking forward to the next adjustments. Thanks for the videos.
It looks to me that one of those plastic newspaper boxes that attach to your mailbox would be about the ideal size for a hood scoop lol.
Silence everybody, Robot Cantina is on. 😎
Can we all appreciate the 10psi 0-60 test and the fact that that little diesel sounded more like a mini powerstroke... spooling like a turbodiesel should!

The intercooler will give you more overhead on how much fuel you can put in it. It should help you keep the engine from melting down from extreme egts

You have so much more discipline than I do with my projects. I would already have wired the waste gate shut, cranked up the fuel and as they say here in western NC “let’r eat”😂😂
Definitely add a scoop. Mount it "backwards" as a previous comment suggested. Make a seal from the hood to the top of the intercooler. Air will then be pulled through the intercooler from under it. Enjoy the lower temps. Add more fuel and boost thus rapidly decreasing the time it will take to reach full destruction!!
Freaking awesome! Love seeing the youtubers I follow working together! ♥
I reckon a mailbox mounted to the hood would make a great looking hood scoop.
Also, anyone not subscribed to aging wheels needs to do some serious evaluation of their life choices.
There is a risk that your intercooler becomes "interwarmer", as hi pressure air from your front dam enters engine compartment, and escapes through scoop. OEM's usually mount intercooler in sandwich with radiator. IC first, then radiator. In this case, I assume that you can do the same and solve two problems: IC will be getting cold air first and radiator will have somewhat less air flow (which would take care of thermostat not being able to regulate). Then pile up more fuel and you will be getting places! P.S. That rear bearing is annoying...we want to hear the turbo! :D Great content!
These videos are ridiculous. And I love every moment. Good job man.

The only bad hood scoop is a faux hood scoop.

Mitch Hedberg pointed out that the "emergency brake" usually ends up as an "emergency make-the-car-smell-funny lever". :D
You and aging wheels are two of my FAVS!!!! Love all the content, especially the insight, since I own a swapped turbo one!
Intercoolers really only make a huge difference when you're making big boost. Compressed air creates it's own heat by virtue of the compression - that's what they really help with. Removing any heat added by the turbo itself is only going to be an issue when you've driven the car long enough for the cold side to be heat soaked by the hot side of the compressor - so on short test drives it's nearly a moot point. I'm not saying that the turbo doesn't help with temps either way - just the temps won't be different enough to noticeably help power until your dealing with higher boost numbers.
This is literally the only CZcams channel I’m excited for upcoming episodes
Keep it up it awesome

I would have thought the intercooler would have made a big difference since manufacturers that save money where ever they can uses them. Maybe you have a point-warm days with high under hood temps might show a benefit. Especially with a couple of catalytic converters hanging on the exhaust manifolds heating the sheet out of the engine compartment.

Hey Jimbo, enjoying your toying around as usual! Any ideas on how to advance the timing on that injection pump? I know literally nothing about that engine or pump beyond what you'd already stated regarding its use... Feel like if you could get the injection advanced, coupled with the turbo and cooler induction, you should see some pretty big gains out of that little guy!
The injection pump timing can be changed by removing a shim that fits between the engine block and the injector pump. We do plan on doing this soon.

I love that you mention Subaru using top mount intercoolers in their WRX and then show a Forester.
Subaru still uses top mounts in their new cars, they just have a duct from the grill to the TMIC.
Toyota's KD series diesel engines used in a variety of their cars including the Hilux uses this intercooler setup, it is mounted on top of the engine with a small scoop on the bonnet.

I'm loving the turbo diesel goodness. With the lower intake temperature (and presumably lower EGT), you should be able to add more fuel for Moe Powah! 😛
Love the hungarian plate on the trabant, never thought i'll see some old easter europe stuff mentioned here. Keep up!
I love that insignificant results are also shared here. Real science.
The screw made me chuckle.
You should also try a reverse hood scoop (hole facing backwards)
If the hole in the bumper creates higher than ambient pressure in the engine bay (which is hard to say, aero is fickle), a scoop will only fight the hole in the bumper decreasing air flow through the intercooler.
If the scoop is reversed however, it creates a low pressure area in front of the windscreen, pulling air through the intercooler.
Again, this only works if the bumper hole is indeed increasing the air pressure.
i love aging wheels' channel, awesome shout out

A rear mounted engine 60s Renault… Oh boy, can’t wait for it!! 🇫🇷
Keep in mind the trabant has a gasoline 2 stroke engine, giving it two advantages. Gas burns faster than diesel, and twice as many power strokes for a given size engine yields more power to weight
My OCD thanks you for adding that screw.
More boost next time please! Looking forward to more episodes on this plucky Saturn!
I’ve been looking forward to this video! Very nice as usual.
Gotta get that boost up in the 15 - 20 PSI range, and increase fuel quantity to keep stoichiometric ratios roughly in the right ball park.. Beyond that - well, nitro injection, if you're crazy. Which this channel sometimes is. Good luck!
Love this series!
It will be interesting to see how far this engine will go. I think, being a diesel, it will take quite a bit. Hopefully it can take around 15psi, doubling it's naturally aspirated output.
At this power level, intercooling just doesn't make a noteable power difference, but as the boost increases it will play more and more of a role. A general rule of thumb I found is ~1% more power for every 10 degrees F. More than anything, the intercooler will lower exhaust temps. Maybe this will allow you to get more aggresive with fueling. Gasoline engines can respond much better to lower temps because of increased ignition timing with lower IAT when octane limited.
Would be interesting to have a instant reading on intake temps. I think it would tell a better story of how the intercooler is doing.
Edit: I see the the lower EGT and added fueling idea has been mentioned a few times!
