I am currently around 1500 books, I started with buying up all the books I used to check out from my library when I was young and then exploded into whatever I was interested in old or new! Space is the largest hurdle for me, Money used to be a problem, but I have found ways to make my hunt cheaper over time and have even gotten lucky with signed author copies from goodwill's or discount book outlets.
Another collection you can do is pop up books.
I only own one book at the moment but it sparked my love do pop up books particularly by Robert Sabuda. The books are just works of art and I happen to find roberts book on the little mermaid at a second hand bookshop and couldn’t leave it behind when I opened it to find detailed pop up’s the size of my head. If you are interested in pop up books I really recommend checking this guy out because he is a paper genius who even replicated one of Leonardo Davincs invention a paper robot that can draw.

I truly enjoyed your video (as well as others on your channel). One thing that occurred to me that you didn't mention is how one's collecting parameters can be very fluid and everchanging over time. Personally speaking, I have changed preferences for certain types of books in my collection, while maintaining others. For example, some authors I collect 1st Edition Hardcovers; other authors, I collect their works, sometimes multiple editions or particular formats. Ex: There are trade paperback editions of all the James Bond books, as well as trade paperback editions of all the Neil Gaiman books. With these I am not as concerned with them being 1st Edition as I am about them being in pristine condition. Some authors are either so prolific or have such a vast body of work that I simply want to collect any edition I can find, such as with Ray Bradbury or Richard Matheson. Again . . . thank you for the entertaining video. Looking forward to the rest of your Collecting Series.

I collect old books, and from there, I specifically have classics (I have a collection of Dickens novels that I haven't been able to research fully yet, and a 6 volume edition of The Illiad as translated by Alexander Pope from 1720), and children's books (I'm actively trying to build a collection of old Oz books).
This video just makes me want to collect more!
Another gem of a video - with the baby I got a bit behind on all your content - so I’m now enjoying the rabbit hole. I started my book collecting by acquiring all the books of my fave authors (Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, Brunella Gasperini, Dino Buzzati, Joseph Roth) I could put my paws on. Then it evolved into upgrading book condition and acquiring multiple copies of the favorite book. By now I’m looking for first editions at estate sales (I find books are overlooked in my area).

I've been collecting a few categories for a while now, but hadn't really considered myself a book collector (despite having a solid hardwood bookcase dedicated to part of my collection in my hobby room for about the last 30 or so years). Your tip of collecting your passion is really the basis I've followed.
I have a reasonable collection of books about trains, roughly focused around books about the railroads that operated in Southern California, because I was raised there. This collection hasn't grown very fast because I mostly bought books that helped me as reference materials for my model railroading. But there is a good selection of coffee table books in there as well that are just collections of pretty train pictures.
The next biggest part of my collection really got started a couple years ago when the photography organization where I've been a member was giving away a bunch of books out of the organization library to more tightly curate the organization's collection. Since I'd been collecting Kodak cameras, I picked up all of the Kodak reference material, and now I'm working more seriously on finding all of the technical guides that Kodak published over the years, as well as the hobbyist how-to books they also published. My favorite piece so far is a book that Kodak published in the early 1930s for hobbyist photographers. I'm considering also building up a binder full of the advertisements that Kodak put in various magazines.
The youngest part of my collection is books about my family history. This has become more important to me as I became a grandparent. I have a couple reprints of published genealogies that connect into my family lines. Now I'm looking to add county histories that mention people in my family, and since my grandfather worked as an animator for Disney for a short time in the 1940s (and we had other family members who were "ink and paint girls" in that era), I'm adding a section covering that history too.
I love the sound of your Kodak collection. And your family history sounds fascinating! My father grew up in SoCal and is the same age as Disneyland. I would love to learn more about your family members who worked for Disney!

After watching this video, I immediately went on Ebay and found a book whose title is my name. My great-aunt Marie gave me a vintage copy of "Invincible Louisa" when I was a child. Many years later I lost it. Now I am waiting for a very clean 1935 edition to arrive in the mail. Thanks for being a positive influence!
Or... Authors who share the same name as you? I'm guessing you have a copy of Little Women (or her other works) by Louisa May Alcott? :)
I collect children book anthologies (folk and fairytales) and music books (hardback with notated music). I do have two copies of a series only because I love the original covers, but it's mass market paperback and OLD so I have another that I can read.

As soon as I saw your video pop up, I thought "oh, I must mention the mythbusting book collecting vid by Rebecca Romney", but of course you've already seen it. 🙂 I've got quite the Virginia Woolf collection at this point - about 45 books either by VW (including letters etc), or biographies, etc, extending into Bloomsbury-circle related books. My dream would be to own a first edition signed (yeah, not gonna happen) copy of The Waves published by The Hogarth Press, as it's my favourite book of all time. I'd also love a first edition Hogarth Press copy of Jacob's Room, because it was the first of VW's works that she truly felt was in her own voice, and the first of her works to be published by The Hogarth Press, which was established and run by Virginia and Leonard Woolf. I also very much go for historical fiction books that heavily feature the natural sciences (botany, zoology etc), particularly if they're Australian.
This was an interesting take on various types of book collections. I had not considered some of those such as the "fake" books which are featured in other books or in movies. Collections by publishers can be satisfying, such as Folio Society books or Beehive Books. They look beautiful on the shelf and are also great to read. If you are an Oprah fan, collect Oprah's Book Club editions.

Your alluding to that Rebecca Romney video (I had relished it during the lockdowns) felt just the right gush of denotive pluralism. I am a reader of books, which invariably implies a pejorative of the two (another pejorative that ties alongside it is the use of lending libraries) that reading entails acquiring reading material. Tied alongside that is my being selective as regards editions, often in the dialectical context of the rest of my library. That, therefore, is why I think of myself as a collector, not a mere acquirer, of books. Any acquisition save for deliberately acquired is a luxury I do have but do not enjoy, what with the domestic distributors and sellers largely regarding condition marginally as a minor qualm (damaged headcaps, chipped edges of boards, worn-off text blocks et al) and what with import duties being erratic at best. In retrospect, this deliberate hunt and peck for laurels for my bookcase feels substantively more of use for systolic perpetuity of the collection than randomly buying reading material would have.

I didn't know about the MinaLima Harry Potter books, but now want to add them to the four HP books I already have illustrated by Jim Kay! You've also given me ideas for a couple of other books I've recently listened to and might now get for their covers 😊
