"I’m an actor, I’m a dancer, I’m a singer and also, a painter.
This film is about me. This is my story of my story." - David Gulpilil
A true icon of Australian cinema. His mesmerising, electrifying presence leapt off the big screen and changed Australian screen representation forever.
The only actor to appear in both of the two highest grossing Australian films of all time, Crocodile Dundee (1986) and Australia (2008), Gulpilil is known throughout the world for his unforgettable performances - from his breakthrough in Walkabout (1971) to films including Storm Boy (1976), Mad Dog Morgan (1976), Peter Weir’s The Last Wave (1977), The Tracker (2002), Rabbit Proof Fence (2002), The Proposition (2005) and his Cannes Best Actor award winning role in Rolf de Heer’s Charlie’s Country (2013).
Integral to the telling of so many legendary screen stories, David Gulpilil, now nearing the end of his life, generously shares his own story with us in My Name is Gulpilil. The actor, dancer, singer and painter takes us boldly on the journey that is his most extraordinary, culture-clashing life.
#MyNameIsGulpilil is directed by Molly Reynolds and produced by Rolf de Heer, Peter Djigirr, David Gulpilil and Molly Reynolds.
Dalaithngu's family has advised that in accordance with his wishes, his name and image may continue to be used following his passing.

Truly sad day for our country and the arts community. An exceptional being who navigated multiple worlds with integrity, wonder and ease. Though having never met him I was forever drawn to his magnetic performances and commentaries. Sorry day and business for many families and communities connected with this special uncle, one that we all feel connected too. Thank you for all that you did for your people, culture and the arts. Your story and the stories you told will live on, long long after this day. Our hearts are full with awe and wonder.
"I am the greatest dancer in the world. Just for me,,,,,,, though."
Such a beautiful sense of humour, such a beautiful man.
Even in his last days, he is still trying to give.
What's not to love.
I knew nothing of this man before “Crocodile Dundee” and all throughout my life I never forgot who this actor was, but I never saw any other work that he did. I remember watching him him dance in that movie and always thought it was so authentic and beautiful. I wished my culture was as rich that one could drop all the modernity of our culture and revert back to nature, if not just for a little bit.
I will try and watch this and other movies he has been in and will now attempt to binge on his life’s work, to get to know him and the culture more.
Rest In Peace.
Loved his film work... he will be greatly missed - RIP David
I just heard this, yes he will be missed.
Aussie legend
I have always adored David, he is, I’m my humble opinion, the most important actor to come out of Australia due to his unique character and native ties to this country! He will forever be iconic and missed! This documentary makes me feel grounded, even in the face of death David was a gentleman and true to his values and character, what a loss for his family, our First Nations people of Australia and all of us who admired his talent from the big screen, There will never be another like him! I loved every single thing he acted in and have watched many of his interviews! I will
Miss him! But not as much as his kin will, I offer my condolences to his most beloved family ❤️
David, in a world that has gone nuts I am glad to see you are still here. God bless you! FREEDOM!!

a truly beautiful and strong soul... I want to know how he came to feel that no one recognised him and his brilliance - this makes my heart hurt ... some people come here to improve this world and that's exactly what he did...
My teen-age crush. Who could ever forget "Walkabout" and "Storm Boy"?
He's leaving a massive hole in Australian arts and in my heart. Goodbye Gulpilil. ❤❤❤

A legend, and an amazing man. You will forever be in our hearts. Rest In Peace. ❤️💛🖤
When the camera is on his eyes, you can see the pain and sadness in them. He worked so hard moving away from the way he had grown up. A man who moved a piece of the world.
Thank you David

Here in the U.S. we rarely hear anything about the Austrailian people let alone the Aboriginal people. I have no idea who Gulpilil is or was. Im sorry for your loss Australia.

Gulpilil is my brother
Boskoe brought me hete
Yes truly sad, he was unabashed and authentic to the bone with a very loveable personality. So tragic that his talents led him astray by the influence of the white man's weakness. So sorry we've lost him 😭
What is this about?
Google will tell you, don't be so lazy
David Gulpilil, an Indigenous Australian actor. A very important figure. Sadly, he just passed away.
