There's manipulation the moment you're told a lie dressed up as indisputable fact by an organisation claiming to be an unbiased news outlet, or told that holding a particular opinion makes you part of an undesirable group. I get what you're saying: nobody is forced to buy anything; it's a choice. However, even the smartest people can be influenced with the right emotional trigger, the right words, the right imagery, the right stereotype. All leon is saying is that one should be sceptical about all information, even from individuals. Everyone has an agenda, be it conscious, or unconscious; sometimes it's benign, sometimes it's evil. Once you sensitise yourself to this fact you see it everywhere.
Everyone and I do mean everyone are a product of the programming they are being subjected to.
