They didn’t qualify because of that rule they had. If you’re nominated for a track before you released a whole album you couldn’t be nominated for BNA. Katy was nominated for I kissed a girl year before her whole album was released and lady Gaga was nominated for just dance a year prior to the fame and poker face. They changed the rule after Meghan trainor was nominated for its all about the base and won BNA a year later. Apparently they went back to the those rules with cardi B who was nominated for bodak yellow but after the release of invasion of privacy she didn’t qualify for BNA, but its back to the rules trainor won.

2018: Alessia Cara - This is probably the most conflicting year for me. In 2023, I would’ve chosen SZA. In 2018, I would’ve chosen Alessia Cara or maybe Khalid or Julia Michaels. I’m actually happy with this one. ❌
2019: Chloe x Halle - I admire Chloe x Halle but I didn’t care for Dua Lipa at this time. In 2023, I would’ve easily chosen Dua Lipa so I’m not mad. ❌
2020: Lizzo - Like Dua Lipa, I didn’t care for Billie but in 2023, I would vote for Billie too. ❌
2021: Phoebe Bridgers - Who won? 😂
2022: Olivia Rodrigo - I loved her debut album but one year later, I would’ve actually voted for FINNEAS but I’m happy with either. Special shout-out to Glass Animals too. ✅
