Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on "Ranking the GRAMMYs: BEST NEW ARTISTS". I think the Grammys are super interesting. Trying to judge music (or any art) on some objective, material scale like that, is kinda crazy when you think about it. And while Album / Song of the Year are the big ones, I think Best New Artist is a fascinating category. Who's hot right now...and who will stay successful / popular as the years go on? Check out my rankings of every Best New Artist of the 21st Century.
Best / Worst / Favorite / Reaction / Review / Rank / List / Macklemore / Ryan Lewis / Meghan Trainor / Esperanza Spalding / Alessia Cara / Shelby Lynne / Fun. / Evanescence / Zac Brown Band / Maroon 5 / Sam Smith / Norah Jones / Chance the Rapper / Christina Aguilera / John Legend / Alicia Keys / Carrie Underwood / Bon Iver / Megan thee Stallion / Dua Lipa / Amy Winehouse / Billie Eilish / Adele

Duffy's also pretty nice, and kinda shitty to toss her under the bus like that since her career fell off because she was abducted and raped (an obviously understandable reason to get the fuck out of the music industry). Duffy absolutely could've had Adele's career path (Rockferry was the #1 album in the UK in 2008, Mercy was a great single that dominated the radio, both do that "blue-eyed soul" shtick), but she's only just now getting back into music. calling her a nobody is ignorant.

So I'm a big jazz fan and your assessment on Spalding is completely wrong. She's actually done several albums that have been extremely well received in the jazz community, and her last album one the best jazz vocal performance album at the Grammys in 2020. It also reached number one on the charts for jazz. So she actually is extremely successful and I think you're biased as well as you not knowing just as well or at least contemporary jazz really misinformed you on this because I think you should have maybe googled or Wikipedia her to actually say if she has been successful afterwards because she's never going to be a pop or R&B success.

He also said that the Beatles won against a bunch of nobodies as if Petula Clark hasn't sold 68 million records. As if her Ivor novello award-winning number one hit song downtown has it been covered by over a hundred and twenty different artists ranging from Billy Preston, Baby Spice, groundskeeper Willie of The Simpsons, Bjork, Marianne Faithfull, The B-52s, Frank Sinatra, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Dolly Parton to name just a few. AstrudGilberto was also one of the nominees at the Beatles beat you know the legendary Brazilian composer who did The Girl From Ipanema which is quite literally the most famous Brazilian song ever. The Beatles did turn into some of the greatest artists of the 21st century but if we are talking about 1963 it was a pop band who won out against actual composers. And even as a Beatles fan does anybody really ever give praise to Please Please Me?

@@Chelaxim Petula Clark was a fave of my gram... So I was shock to hear that .. Because in my house and most Black households we don't listen to The Beatles. I do respect the Beatles Because I do think that they were extremely experimental in their music and I like the fact that they were very anti-segregation and they were proud to speak on the influences that brought them to music but the people that they were going against are Legends. Again it's just someone who's extremely misinformed and I find that there's a lot of people who don't know older music except for whoever was extremely popular or the well-known name, so they just order back to assume that's the person who should win or deserve to win when there are a lot of factors that go into it. Again I just think that he should have done more research before making some of these statements I know that they're his opinions but it's just that someone stuff he's saying is so misinformed it drives me crazy. Like he said he didn't know who Joss Stone was, just don't have such a loyal fan base and the girl has such a beautiful voice, and the fact that he said that Dua lupa was the only deserving winner in her category versus HER and Chloe X Halle.. Fun fact: Esperanza Spalding isn't the only jazz musician to win the Best New Artist Grammy. I know where you got this information from. It's from Wikipedia, isn't it? I also read that sentence where it said "Of all the winners, only one (Esperanza Spalding) has been a jazz artist." The source of that claim is from a now defunct entertainment news website who somehow made a lazy false claim. But, no actually, Spalding wasn't the first and only jazz musician to win the award.
The first Best New Artist Grammy was awarded to Bobby Darin in 1960. Darin made two albums before the award, one is for his rock and roll music and the second one is for adult standard a la Frank Sinatra jazz. Darin was the first jazz artist to win Best New Artist. Then in 1962, Peter Nero, a jazz pianist won the same award. He is also a jazz musician.
In 2003, Norah Jones won Best New Artist. Isn't she jazz? You even mentioned her in this video. In 2008 Amy Winehouse won the award too, though she won it for her Back to Black record which is essentially soul and rhythm and blues, but she is considered to be a jazz musician. Her 2003 album Frank is jazz.
So no, Esperanza Spalding is not the only jazz musician to win Best New Artist. I hope someone is going to fix that sentence in the Wikipedia article so no one else is going to be misinformed.

I’d disagree with the assessment of Esperanza’s career. I’m a jazz musician and in my experience at least, she is still known and respected in that sphere. She’ll probably never have like big pop success, but some of her work in more recent times has still been critically well received, she still plays major jazz festivals with high billing, and you occasionally see some small mainstream media coverage of her work. I’d say she’s had a fairly typical level of career success for someone who’s “famous” specifically by the standards of the modern day jazz world.

She's a singer songwriter and poetress.. Who's songs and albums are heavily played. Her verzuz was one of the most talked about as well.
While I like dua lipa you saying she's the real stand out compared to ChloexHalle and HER, who plays her own instruments, is laughable.
I'm also not seeing what's special about Billie Eilish, Black Pumas, Lil Nas X, Lizzo and Yola are better performers.
He won't go is vastly underrated. I agree...but to say Adele went up against nobody's just because you don't know them is really disingenuous. Duffy it literally is expired by the exact same music that adale and Amy winehouse were inspired by. That would be 60s black soul music. Duffy's also pretty well known in the UK. Jazmine Sullivan is extremely well known among R&B and neo soul singers... She's also a singer-songwriter and has some of the best R&B albums that have been put out in the past decade. I'm not a fan of the Jonas Brothers but to say that they weren't popular and still aren't popular is a lie even one of the brothers had a huge solo career. And Lady antebellum again one of those groups with a terrible name but they actually have some good music and are quite popular in the country scene. Also this award is about artistry! Not about "star power" or success. So those factors aren't even relevant. Now I love me some Britney and she's a great dancer with a lot of bops but Christina has always been the superior artist in terms of versatility, musicianship, production, writing, messages, VOCALS etc. Her discography isn't just dance pop. Christina has actual substance that varies from supporting LGBTQ rights before it was a trend to singing about domestic abuse to powerful feminist anthems and self-acceptance. Throughout her career she's healed many people with her music. She's a literal life-saver and that is the biggest accomplishment a musician can achieve. Christina is a real artist and a real live singer, who is praised by the likes of Whitney Houston, Cher, Etta James and Pattie Labelle to be one of the best and who is cited by countless pop girls today as a major influence like Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Ava Max, Demi Lovato, Little Mix etc. This particular award went, deservingly, for the one with more talent and artistry, not for the one with more popularity. And that should always be the case.

No, but I don't think anyone expects a jazz musician to do that. She has become one of the most successful, influential, and respected musicians in contemporary jazz, and her musicianship has not stopped evolving since she won that award. Obviously fuck the grammys, but considering the lack of commercial appeal that modern jazz has, Esperanza's success certainly earns her the award.

On one hand, my biased hand, I’m extremely happy with the decision because she’s one of my favorite singers of this generation, especially being someone who doesn’t give a flying fuck about modern pop music, but on the other, I’m not blind to the truth.

Adele only seems like a clear cut winner now, after we know she became a best selling artist. But at the time, Duffy was considered as the next Amy Winehouse in terms of talent and success, with bigger sales and hits than Adele. Lady A, was also quite popular in the country music world. And they became even bigger after Need You Now, which won Song and Record of the Year 2 years later. Not to mention The Jonas Brothers was the thing back then. So, no, Adele was NOT the clear choice.
BUT, I agree Adele is #1 on list, because they could've chosen one of the other more popular (at the time) nominees. Instead, they somehow managed to give the awards to someone who eventually became one of the biggest selling artists of the century. That's the definition of the best decision ever.

I might be in the minority here but I really wish the Black Pumas had won, I love the soulful and Motown reminiscent music that they're making!

Same here! I’ll admit the star power of Megan was pretty unbeatable for that award. But they’re an act that I really hope stick around for a while

I love Taylor, but I am glad Amy Winehouse won that year especially because Taylor’s first album is significantly worse than her main breakthrough album Fearless. Some of the songs off of the debut were huge for country songs so I guess I understand why she was nominated. P.S I don’t think Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are that bad… like Meghan Trainer is worse

      @JJRedy Před 2 lety +1

Yeah but how good an artist is isn't the only factor he uses.
Like, Macklemore won against James Blake, Ed Sheeran, Kacey Musgraves and Kendrick Lamar. Artists that are far better (or commercially successful), and still relevant to this day, unlike Macklemore.
Meghan Trainor sucks but her fellow nominees weren't that special, so it isn't as egregious as macklemore

The entire album some nights, and their previous album, aim and ignite, are both masterpieces. If they kept going together they wouldn’t have been considered a BNA curse artist.

I really like your channel, I spent most of my childhood listening to country and have been using your channel to help find some suggestions for other genres. I just wanted to point out that Brad Paisley (who lost to number 18 on the list) is a major name in the country space. Not sure if it'd move the positions at all or if you already took that into account, but I thought it was good to point out in case
