Model Railroad Update 79: Thoughts on Trees

  • This video is sort of a follow up to Update #78 on trackside vegetation. In it we ramble on about trees- and how to get the ones we are really looking for.
We have realized that in order to get trees as we want them, we are going to have to make them. While we certainly will use some commercial trees, and large majority will need to be made ourselves. This video has some thoughts on how we may proceed and how we were able to improve the looks of several commercial trees.

You are so right I live in the woods no branches low they're all up high.
I plan on using a winter trees with no leaves just like the one you're Making ...

For things like vines and the spindly little trees that fill in between the bigger trees, I've tried using roots from things like weeds. If you pull a clump of weeds from the ground, shake out the dirt, wash them off and let them dry out for several days, preferably in the sun. That's just one idea...

Great vids BTW ,just found these lately and they are very informative. You are right about some of those store bought trees ,some pretty good and some just down right silly looking, and when modeling in N scale...well it can be a challenge. Those WS premade trees use that po0lyfiber stuff and then sprinkled with leaf matter ,but it`s that poly fiber ,looks like a "hood:.I make my own and use store bought ,but I often "smarten" them up to look good.Since I live in Canada in ye ole` Boreal forest ,I see a lot of trees and in all 4 seasons. My layout is being modeled in mid-late fall ,so again another challenge to make them look realistic and not just a sea of yellow, red and orange.
    Great work !

Great points on how the trees grow. My issue is I live in the south and our trees are mainly Southern White Pines. Tall and skinny with the needles at the top. The trees on the edge have limbs and needles along most of the height. So I'll be watching your technique and adapt it to southern pine manufacturing. Static grass as Pine needles?

I did all my trees so far ,, and that was a temp layout ,, for the most part you have to make your own ,, too make them all dif , so you are so right ,, stay away from puff ball ,, you have to make your own ,, to do it justice

Nice layout and video. Maybe to help the look of the trees they need more undergrowth. Right now to me you are looking at trees and nothing else. I know how hard it is to make things realistic,

I assume from what I've seen so far you are mainly going for deciduous trees? And you've probably already watched every tree tutorial out there. DaveClass47 just did one using stems from a plant called seafoam, which I hadn't heard of, which you could grow for free in the garden. Personally I thought the "trunks" were a bit spindly for mature trees, but they could make excellent background trees saving your time and effort for the front rank. And I already know you too follow Luke Towan, so you'll have seen his pines made with the hanging basket liner? Good luck with whatever you decide to do - I know it'll look good.

when I tried some wire wound trees, I wanted to try a big one. To get all the branches inn the base wuld be too thick. So I made some sub assemblies and soldered them to the main trunk, so I had plenty of branches. That's where I stopped....

I too have reverted to making my own trees, albeit slowly, as for me its a family thing I do with my children and wife.. Have you taken a look at Grand Central Gems trees? I have purchased many to fill in several areas of my layout and I have found them to be far better looking than those manufacturers you mentioned. Its worth a shot any how :)

Rob, I love the job you're doing on the layout. I personally do not like doing the ground cover but you make it look easy. I'm not sure on your thoughts about graffiti, but i was thinking some might look good on the rocks at the 21 minute mark. Thoughts? Keep up the great work. Jeff

Thought you might find this interesting. It is a video on how to make trees and it looks like the trees you took pictures of. Everything used to make the trees can be purchased at your local craft store. www.modelrailroadacademy.com/video/how-to-make-model-railroad-trees-for-your-background-010538/

Good info. I can only dream of getting to this level of detail on my layout.
Just an FYI - I know there's a place, something longshadowsmodeltrees.com I think, and he custom makes some trees that are tall like you want to make (tall aspens and jack pines?). At 6 trees for $20, that's not so bad. Might be worth a look. His trees may be a good starting point.

Obviously you have given thought to your trees and come, basically, to the conclusion that a tree has to have different leaf textures, colors of leaves/ bark and armature styles to achieve a realistic look. I agree that manufacturer's trees have certain elements they can improve upon but, they're catering to a wide audience and need to provide a tree that represents a generic of the prototype. I am probably stating the obvious to you however. You have a nice model railroad there and paying attention to scenic details has lent itself well for you!
In a previous segment you made mention of a poster suggesting a tower on the top of a hill; I agree the vertical presence would breakup the scenery and trick the eye of the viewer into thinking it's a larger distance.
    Just observations.
