  • Learn how to setup an automatic waterer for livestock in todays video.
    Our cows watering setup was taking too long to fill up the tanks, and was wasting our time ( and water) so today I decided to setup an automatic watering setup.

    If your tank isn't level, put the float valve on the low end of the trough and it won't run over.

    We use it and we love it. We have a very small tank, barely deep enough for the float valve. We leave it on, and neither the cows nor the goats have ever messed with it. We use a small tank so it has to refill more often, and more fresh water comes through the hose, rather than it just sitting in a tank.

    This was revenge on all those ads, which take personal intelligence for granted. I hate all those cleaning ads, before promoting their wonderful new product, they'll have the actor wrestling with a mop and bucket, like they'd never seen one before. "Grrr, why doens't this mop and bucket work", when they're just shaking it in their hands like a Neanderthal. I felt you captured that same vibe, by wrestling the hose and wrapping it around your neck, lol. But I knew you taking the Mickey, so it was funny. ;)

    Another good idea, to help guard against burning up your pump or pumping your well dry, is to install a Low Pressure Cut-Off Water Pressure Switch. When it detects low water pressure in your well (as in it's almost pumped dry), the switch will turn the pump's power supply off until you arrive and manually reset it.

      COME ON, THEY BEEN AT FEED MILLS FOR OVER 50 YEARS even display in a tank, not that brand though, same as the live stock water bowls you bolt to the wall of the barn, they come in cast steel and ABS, i have some of both

  • @arnoldromppai5395
    @arnoldromppai5395 Před 6 lety +1

    i have use 6 of those valves in 6 tanks for 30 years, 1st dont use the 2 screw clamps to hold the valve on, the cows pull it out of place, drill the holes in the brackets out to 1/4" smd drill thought the tank and install 2 - 1/4" stainless steel bolts an lock nuts, dont use a garden hose to feed it as the hose gets kinked an no water comes out, buy a 300' roll of 1/2" pex pipe, put a 90 deg elbow in the pipe at the valve, install a pex fitting to 1/2 NPT THEN A GARDEN HOSE adapter, plumb the pex pipe into a copper pex manifold were you connect all your aoto waters to, install a pex shut off valve in the pex line near the manifold if you didnt buy the copper pex manifold with built in valves, pex pipe is by far cheaper then any garden hose, like 28$ CND per 100 feet, the sun or freezing will not damage it, you can drive over it and not hurt it, you can berry it under ground like i did, you could use black poly pipe but it cost more, i leave the water on all the time, as normally your pump presser switch should be one with a 10Lb safety shot off style, so what that means is if your water presser drops to 10Lbs or less the whole system shuts off until you manually restart the presser switch, never a danger of burning out your pump is well went dry, i never have a problem with my well ever going dry, even running 2- 1" lines open all night and day, check t see if your presser switch has this built in safety, if it has, there will be a silver leaver on the left side of the presser switch, thats what you use to re-start your pump, you pull the leaver up just a little until your water presser gauge reads 20 PSI AND LET THE LEAVER GO if you dont have a leaver on yours, replace it with the right one. NOTE. pex pipe when you un-roll it will be like a snake, leave it in the warm sun for an hour and it will get soft and you can make it lay flat and make all the nice bends you neeed. for long runs to many places you need water i ran 1" pex out and tee off with 1/2" pex to auto waters, and ran 1" pex to each barn, from the main presser tank, i built a big stanless steel 1" manifold in my root cellar were my presser tank is next to my well, with has all 1" ball valves for each feed, the field auto water lines as well as all pen lines are feed with ether 1/2 or 3/4" pex, do not cheap out on water line size or you will loss flow when really needed, do it right the first time, doing a half ass set up will just cost you much more later, and half the time that half ass set up cost more in the first place, oh you dont need to run out and buy $150 water tanks an old bath tub works great and they are free and look much better and is not so high that cows can push it over, one more thing, set your tanks 1/3rd under the eletric fence so your cows, horses goats, sheep have 2/3rds of the tank to drink so they dont just hang around the water tank and leave there mess all over the ground around the tank, they dont feel comfortable staying that close to the wire, they drink and leave, same way they retch under the wire to get that little bit of sweet grass just bast the wire, carefully, they leave. i put a loop of eletric wire around the float, so they dont play with it

    Maybe put a timer valve on it and set it to fill for 15 to 20 minutes 4 times a day? This way if there is a malfunction the water won’t run all day and drain your well. Just do periodic inspections.

    All the horse boarding facilities i pasture boarded at had tanks with floats. They would have to build a tamper proof housing for the float because some horses are busy bodies and like to mess with the floots. Usually it was made of boards wrapped with hardware cloth to discourage the chewing. They also stocked the tanks with mosquito fish or goldfish to keep the mosquitoes from breeding. They hardly ever cleaned out the tanks, they looked gross, but the horses all drank out of them fine. I now have my horses on my homestead. I don't use a float because I want to know how much my horses are drinking. I have the same Rubbermaid tank as you for my two horses. I let it empty then fill it every 3 days or so. Mosquitoes don't have enough time to breed in the interval and algae grows but doesn't get too gross.

    • @mountainryder8
      @mountainryder8 Před 6 lety

      P.S. I just stick the hose into the tank and do some weeding or manure handling while it fills up. Yes, I have forgotten and had it overflow more than once!

Also I would not know if any of them where not drinking or drinking to much. Never had cows so maybe great for them. Would be nice not to do water troughs every two days or so. I can't believe you did that--leaving that hose sticking up from that valve isn't something I'd have thought you'd do. The animals aren't likely to worry much if the step on the hose. You need to put a couple of 90-degree ells and some PVC to run the line down to go under the trough before you attach the hose, so they the connection will be protected from hooves of whatever animal are using the trough. The flexible hose can take the hooves, for a while, but having that hose sticking up will not likely last so long.

      i have auto water bowls in the barn, the live stock keep it above freezing even at -40, if your barn is to big put up divider wall to cut down the space needed so they keep it warm, plumb with pex pipe so when they go out in the day and it freezes it will not brake lines, and it opens once everyone is in again

  • @WaitWhat99
    @WaitWhat99 Před 6 lety

    Haha funny as 🤣👍🏻 question though... when the float valve seals the hose, won’t the water pressure just keep holding it open? I know the water pressure from our tanks is pretty high... 🤔🤔🤔

    • @arnoldromppai5395
      @arnoldromppai5395 Před 6 lety +1

      the floats are big, and rated for 100 psi, if your higher then that install a presser control valve in line or turn your pump presser down to normal cut in psi of 40psi and cut out at 60psi, higher presser can damage the plumbing in the home
