  • If you are cold, does that mean your cows, pigs, and chickens are also cold? How cold is too cold? What do they need to stay warm outside? What are some problems with cold weather and how do you solve them?

In Wyoming, a technique we used to prevent hoses from freezing is drain the hose. That involves holding the hose over your high head, slowly walking the length of the hose and let gravity drain the water out of the hose. We've been able to use hoses in -0 degree temperatures as long as we drain the hose after every time we watered our livestock.

Will the hose re-freeze before you finish draining it in cold weather?

@@stephenluna7932 Personally, I haven't had any issues with it, but I'm not sure about that

We had windchills of -45 in Iowa with actual temps of -20. Thankfully we are able to run heaters to our troughs. The snow drifts covered the troughs and i had to dig them out. We wind our hoses up and bring them into our basement to keep them thawed. We kept hay in front of our horses, cattle and goats 24/7. Some of our roosters got frostbite on their combs and waddles, but all survived.

We used a metal-under-the- bucket warmer for our chicken waterer, but the nipples, on several days, still froze. So we went back to the older waterer, where they drink from the bottom trough, and that stays warm enough even with the snow. We also put a layer of tarp around out coop, as we had used fresh cut wood to build it, so there is a lot of ventilation, and we wanted to cut down wind. They still have an extra door open, and the slanted ventilation at the roofline, so they have good air flow. Good to see you, thanks!!

lol "arrrg stop catching on fire" haha some great ideas! I am very glad we don't even get that cold, but as a payment we also don't get as warm as y'all.

Glad you're such a good shepherd for your animals. I've seen little immersion heaters used on some other channels, but I'm pretty sure they need electricity to work. 🤷‍♀️

Glad to be here and great video. I never would have thought of using the torch on the hose.

Back to warmer and wetter here in TN. We put a heater in the coop, but the water kept freezing. Egg production dropped, but chickens did OK. They didn't walk on the snow until I put some soil on top and then they came out of the coop. Now all the snow is gone and we have moved into soupy mud. Time for more wood chips! God bless you and your Flannel family. Stay warm and dry and place your trust in God.

Up here in balmy New England we know cold. Try using black hoses when they freeze you can leave them out in the sun and they thaw out pretty good on their own.

Any way you can keep water moving, will help with "short term" freezing temperatures like in your area. Also, a little salt may help because it lowers the freezing point of water.

You can paint an IBC black to absorb the heat from the sun, but the only real solution is buried water pipes and freeze proof hydrants. We also use submersible tank heaters where we have power.

Great talk about how cold hardy chickens are Brian. Thanks for all the cow cold tips. Piggies, they pile! The water issue at our little hobby farm is fixed by 3 frost free hydrants in the yard for water all winter long. One is at each end of the barn outside and another is between the barn and the house. We have outlets in each stall so we can plug-in their water buckets to keep them from freezing inside the barn. I live in Minnesota. If we have more than a week of minus 20°F then even the buckets inside the barn will freeze. We have to break the ice out and refill everyday. We usually refill the buckets everyday anyway. Dust settles on the water. We put everyone outside the barn as much as we can when the weather is okay because it's good for the animals to be outside. The asphalt driveway has the snow melt off of it fast on sunny days so we have a place to put the goat where he isn't in snow and we bring out a pad of hay for him to lay on if he wants to besides the hay we bring him to eat. We like having the nice barn for everyone to be in at night in the winter. Thanks for this video Flannel family!

@@FlannelFarmsIt's weird because your clothes sound different and the cars make a different higher sound in the dense air. You can't wear leather because it will tear in the cold. I know why the Eskimos have 20 names for snow too! You have to put many layers on. It got some getting used to.

I use heating pads for my younger chickens when it's cold or if they are pullets. I won't use one of those dangerous heat lamps.

Anyways, we have chickens ( western Ohio). Last week we had a week of 0 degrees with winds up to -15. We had to constantly refill waters since it was frozen solid within 2 hours. Our chickens prefer cold rainy weather over hot sunny summers 🤣

I don't have a good solution, I'm like you hauling water out. I plan to watch this off and on to see if someone knows.
