Reykjavik Could Be Better Located for The Future - Lava Fields Around The City
Vložit
- čas přidán 11. 05. 2024
- Reykjavik is surrounded with lava fields, craters, tuff mountains from subglacial eruptions and other geological features like the enormous "Hjallamisgengi" fault. Those lava fields originate from various sources but many of the can be traces to the so-called Krísuvik volcanic system and some experts claim it's already woken up, and we might get some big news in the coming years.
This simple drone tours a part of a project about the volcanoes around the city and I intend to finish it in the summer of 2024. This video gives you an idea about the scale of the project and lava has flowed trough the city as well so I will be tracing those lava streams down to the sea.
The video starts with by Grindaskörð mountain pass where you see little craters looking like cups and further back we see the Reykjavik ski resort, Bláfjöll. The obvious trail trough the mountain pass is called Selvogsgata and it is an old highway which was mainly made when farmers by the south coast and did their shopping in Hafnarfjörður. It was also used by the workmen when the sulfur mines were still in operation. It's a popular hiking route that can be accessed via road 402.

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
I’m an armchair traveller enjoying the ride, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Historical records and artifacts need to be moved to the safest possible place. Thanks, Gylfi.
My continuing appreciation of not only your videos and information, but also that you are putting these out fir historical purposes. My city was founded in 1775, I have watched its growth since 1969. We have a couple historians now that work on tracking the changes. It is amazing, especially as I am someone that misses the nostalgic over "progress".
Thank you again for showing us your beautiful country.
Just love this channel. I can't wait to go back to Iceland
Welcome back :)
These panorama shots are great!
Thanks for this, Gylfi, and all the other hard work you put in.
It is much appreciated.
It's absolutely stunning. Once you visit it seems to seep into your soul becoming part of you.
I feel exactly the same way.
Yes, that's true. I visit many countries but most of them make me feel like a foreigner. When I come to Iceland I feel like just a person.
Godspeed to you all, Gylfi.
Please stay safe.
Again such an amazing video of harsh and beautiful Iceland ❤
You always capture the beauty and essence of Iceland 😍
Glad you think so❤
It's an amazing landscape. People have lived there for many generations, of course, they thought it would stay that way forever. The lessons learned with Grindavik may save Reykjavik.
You're one of the best ones out there that can take amazing shots while pairing it with great music. I love your vids.
Appreciate that😊
Stunning video, Gylfi. Takk fyrir. Only 3 months till I visit Iceland again and I really can't wait.
Wonderful! Welcome to Iceland :)
Good evening G.
Evening and welcome :)
Gorgeous day for filming! Thanks for the beautiful panorama. 😍
Thanks for the lovely video and good evening and greetings from Germany
Gylfi, Are you getting any Spectacular Aurora's yet? There are reports that Porta Rico are getting a display, yesterday!!!
Clouds, sadly, but it's a small chance tonight, might give it a go
@@JustIcelandic Do you have enough darkness to even see them this time of year?
One thing I always wish for in your drone tour videos is a better understanding of where the camera is looking. It would be amazing if you could inset a map of Iceland in the corner, with a shaded wedge-shaped region indicating where the camera is looking.
Thanks Gylfi, you keep on delivering these wonderful video's of Iceland. Kind Regards and best wishes from NZ.
Many thanks!
Can only add "Excellent" to the many articulate responses below...and also, thanks so much again for your work and for sharing it with all of us!
Many thanks!
Stunning..... 😊
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful. You might want to drop in that the mountains in the background at 1:00 onwards are about, what ~80km (50 miles) away. It stunned me when I visited some 25 years ago and saw that. The air is so clean there compared to where I live (UK).
There's too many of us here in the UK and increasing a million more every year. It's a shame to see so much of the green and pleasant land be built up with awful cookie cutter housing estates.
Just as impressive as your drone footage I must point out your matching of the footage with great music. The combination of visual and audio mske your videos so compelling.
Takker fyrir , Gylfi . Hilsen frå norgesmenn i Island . 🇮🇸
Tak og hilsen til Norge :)
Thanks. One thought: for us outside Iceland it would be useful to show the location of each shot and the direction. I don't know whether this would be possible to arrange but it would certainly make it easier to comprehend what is being shown.
Looking out to the coast it seems like a warm sunny day - until the camera moves around and you can see the remnants of the snow.
I probably won't ever visit your beautiful country, but the stunning videos make me ok with that fact!
Thank you soo much . That is beauty and your choice of music is very good.
I'm glad you like it :)
Beautiful photography ! Excellent.
Thank you so much 😀
thanks for the panoramic view gylfi
Welcome :)
Thanks for sharing 🙏
Thanks for visiting
Sweet. 👍😊👌
Another beautiful video of the area around Reyjavik. I saw the Red Bull video about the ski jumping record attempt near your hometown, so I can see that the south of Iceland has much less snow than the north at this time of year.
Gylfi, it always amazes me how clear it can be up there. No air pollution and it seems like you can see forever. Does Iceland have a limit as to how high you can fly the drone? As a Geographer what is the furthest point to point you have ever been able to see at altitude. The whole Reykjavick pennisula is easily seen but can you see the big volcanoes in on the Eastern part of the island?
You know, a while back I was looking on Google Maps just at what areas are included in "Reykjavíkurborg". I found out that there is a big land area between the fjords of Kollafjörður and Hvalfjörður which currently only has one settlement called Grundarhverfi. Of course, it is _relatively_ far away from the rest of Reykjavík and there's probably a need to change some things like policies and such in order for the city to expand there in any great scale but afaict, it looks must safer than if the city were to expand south.
Good that you noticed this because I made a video covering this topic :) czcams.com/video/cPFek9L-Ic8/video.html
@@JustIcelandic Oh, I thought I had seen all the episodes in this series but looks like I missed one. It is indeed incredible but probably not that surprising that Kjalarnes is underdeveloped. They always seem to want to squeeze everything into a tiny area even if you have a large area close by. 15 minutes is nothing especially since plans for better road integration (the 4 lane highway) are apparently also available. Let's hope somebody comes to their senses and starts to advocate for the development of Kjalarnes but at the same time I won't be holding my breath for it. Thanks!
Desolate and beautiful.
Enjoy :)
in australia is very common to move whole house , but i think, it is easy here, because the houses do not have basement.. i am not sure how iceland houses are build... just the thought.. big time for iceland the earth is moving thanks for your videos
It makes one wonder: how much of Iceland is really safe to build on?
So beautiful surroundings, but....
Welcome :)
♥️
Welcome :)
Saell Gylfi minn! Madhur gleymir stundum hve otakmarkadh skyggnidh getur veridh å Islandi. Snaelellsjökull i seilingarfjarlaegdh. Takk, beztu kvedhjur, Billi.
Já Billi minn, það er frábært að hafa þetta skyggni, manni finnst það stundum of sjálfsagt :)
Lava like water flows downhill. Yet, an ancient uplift that looks desirable to build on, just may awaken. Need that ground-penetrating radar that is on the space station to see if it's built to penetrate hardened lava and view magma tunneling.
😊🥰
Welcome
Yes, quite. Admittedly the name itself may so I've heard refer to sea-mist in the bay, but I still can't help being aware of the masses of lava flows that are all too visible every time I take the ride to and from Keflavik international airport!
Hello Gylfi and thank you for another amazing video. May I have a little suggestion? Can you name those volcanoes in the video? (Like pop-up captions over the volcano or on it.) It would be amazing to see the count and names :). Thank you. Martin
Thanks for sharing Gylfi, I noticed in July 2023 that this section of road from the junction with road 417 to the East was closed. Can you tell me why ? Is it open again now ? Road 417 was quite a scenic drive
Agree! Why they ever build towns close to fissures and faultlines? Insane!
I note Shawn Willsey is heading to Iceland from either the 14th or 15th of May. Are you having a meet up with him Gilfy?
Maybe, but if we've learned anything from your videos and rewporting, we know Icelanders are TOUGH and resilient and will deal with any problems most effectively. On Vestmannaeyjar, they fought back the lava flows in 1973, and wound up with an even more protected harbour than they had had before! Sadly, some of the homes that have been lost in Grindavik apparently were those of people wo had left the island during the eruption, and decided to stay on the "mainland."
Is it feasible to start building berms now? Or is the town built on the fault lines and cracks and old tubes?
Thanks Gylfi👍
Welcome :)
Did you see the Red Bull video about the ski jump?
The north-western bits of Iceland apparently haven't seen any volcanic activity in over ten thousand years. One maybe should spend a thought on building something there? 🥴 Like a safe second location for governmental facilities in case of emergency?
What alternative locations does Iceland have to house people from Reykjavik if the surrounding lava fields become to dangerous?
Don't know if anyone else has asked you this, where on the island is the safest place for the capital?
West Iceland, around and north of Borgarfjörður
I guess if AMOC shuts down there are vague predictions Iceland will be the new cold north pole and temporarily all this will be buried in snow and ice year round . Humans live such short lives geologically speaking so its amazing seeing such rapid changes today .
I wonder if The Rift gravel race will go ahead? Still another chance of more chaos…
Borgarnes?
I was looking at the No Maga zone...
It looks mountainous though!?
I don't think there are any MAGA idiots in Iceland, except maybe, a few imports. 😉
Two and a half minutes without the weather changing, a record?
THANK YOU 👍🙏>>>>💚
