- Grammy winner Patti LaBelle singing "Way Up There," Tena Rix Clark's song originally written for NASA's Centennial of Flight observance in 2002, at the memorial service for the crew of the destroyed space shuttle orbiter Columbia's final mission, STS-107. The service took place at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, USA on 6 February 2003. The video intercuts scenes from the memorial with footage of the doomed astronauts before and on their final flight. I absolutely defy you to watch this and not bawl like a newborn, as I did. Publicly available online at www.NASA.gov.

Patti is one and only singer who can express this much of feeling in every of her performances. She always gives more than 100% every time she perform.
This woman loves God!!!!
my choir might sing this for a training festival
I agree. I am a huge fan of Patti and love every minute of her singing her lungs out, but it's nice to hear her do something like this
She sung through her tears which shows how amazing she is. God Bless the friends and family of the astronauts!
Patti's voice definitly adds some struction to a song but its moments like this is when u can here the clarity in her vocal expressions.
THERE WAS NO ONE BETTER TO DO THIS THEN PATTI SHE HAS THAT GODLY SOUND WHEN SHE SING YOU GOT TO LOVE IT IM HAPPY SHE DID THIS
Miss Patti LaBelle, not only a Diva, but a true "Lady" in the greatest meaning of the word! Class, Talent, Dignity, Sophistication. Patti at her always Best!
She was clearly sick here because Patti soars effortlessly but her lower register was so rich and beautiful she didn't even have to attempt to go up. Beautiful & sincere ❤❤
She looks so beautiful and dignified in this video.
So gorgeous, so sad.
I read a book about Rick Husband... and cried so hard.
"Higher Calling", by chance?
Thank you Patti Labelle for giving us such a tribute to men and women who carried our dreams to space for a better humanity.
Nice one but we in Africa had issues of poverty and disease since the 1980s
MAY THEY ALL REST IN PEACE HALLALULA AMEN
brings me to tears, every time I watch it, for the past decade. anyway, I wish they would have kept the shuttles in service and improved them.
thanks so much for keeping this video out there. I watch it every year on Feb 1st to remember and work through the guilt.
That song is so powerful and so beautiful! RIP Columbia Crew!
this song touch my soul especially when she sings
Gone but not forgotten may they rest in peace and walk with jesus in heaven
still have to cry, eveytime I see this again.
Patti did an awesome job - my voice would have failed completely.
Absolutely beautiful, and horrible at the same time. Thanks so much for posting this.
I was off the weekend it happened and watch all the video I could, I can't help, but think could they have gotten another shuttle ready to mount a rescue.. RIP Columbia! You're still very much Loved and Missed to this day!
I saw the clip and the texture of voice is just so moving, touchng and without a doubt spine chilling. Patti really knows how to adjust her voice to a melody that can appeal to the crowd of people for great entertainment thanx for the info.
this video just made me cry and cry and cry. tears flowing down my face in rivers. to have patti singing the song, just added to the entire experience of the video.
my wish for america is that one day we put aside our petty difference and be like this cohesive crew and work together. no racial barriers, no gender barriers, no national barriers. just love, respect and admiration for one another.
all who agree say:
Amen
R.I.P to all astronauts who died that day 😍🙏 you are remembered for your heroic actions
Love Her!! Awesome lady
This song was released as a single on hip-o records so you all better google it and get on craigslist and ebay and order yourself a copy it helps to hear this song at least once a week if not once a day!:)
History can say what it wants about Aretha...
Patti wins.
Oh my God, that was so beautiful. So incredible and sad about the brave and awesome souls on all space missions.
LOVE IT VERY EMONTIONAL
Patti sings this with a feeling of warmth indeed a mild tone now this is at her best no hollering, yelling, screeching and high piche screams just simple and elegant.

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Oh my lord...... :(
This was awesome. Thanks for posting. I love patti and i love the tribute.
If you want to see another video of Patti singing like this, search for Patti Labelle You are so beautiful, not the one with Joe Cocker, the one where she is singing to Elizabeth Taylor. It just sends chills down my spine. She starts off soft and quiet, but she does her thing in the end.
I love that performance, it's proof that even when she's hoarse she brings the house down while making you feel so warm inside
Thanks for putting this back up. It was originally written to celebrate the then-upcoming Centennial of Powered Flight celebration, but it was quickly rewritten.
as where the Crew
Ma'am, may I listen to you speak on it?
