But in the context of the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations, it makes sense why they would trust working with “Communists” and decide to reject it. (Plus, just imagine how much they’d lose in the next elections if they had!) But by 1964-1965, it should have been obvious that it would just be a waste of lives that the US public ultimately wouldn’t tolerate. It was pride, politicking, ignorance, and stubbornness that kept the war going. It’s the problem that politicians often have lol. It always prioritizes the short term (unless it’s on a personal level for them of course. Every politician looks in the mirror and sees a future President). People could know the political effects of staying in would ultimately be much worse for them, but no one wanted to pull the trigger and incur the short term consequences now. After all, the future is years away! It’s sort of the same with climate change today (on a much larger scale, ofc) Ironically, staying in Vietnam ended up being seen as LBJ’s biggest failure and cowardice, and or course ultimately is what cost him 1968. If he had withdrawn from Vietnam, and with the rest of his (honestly great) domestic record, he’d almost certainly have been a two term President - and been remembered as one of the best in modern history. @CIA BETA Wing If you’re talking about the present day geopolitics, then I agree. Modern day Vietnam has shifted to the State-ish capitalism, similarly to China - and they’re actually moving towards becoming a pretty close US ally in the region (because of anti-China Realpolitik obviously lol). So I agree, you’re right, the US won in that sense.
But it’s sort of undeniable the escalation of troops in Vietnam was a strategic error. The initial entry was, with the hindsight, also a mistake. It’d have been better to take Ho Chi Minh up on his offer to join the US in an alliance, since it would have essentially left the US in the same place as today. But in the context of the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations, it makes sense why they would trust working with “Communists” and decide to reject it. (Plus, just imagine how much they’d lose in the next elections if they had!)
But by 1964-1965, it should have been obvious that it would just be a waste of lives that the US public ultimately wouldn’t tolerate. It was pride, politicking, ignorance, and stubbornness that kept the war going. It’s the problem that politicians often have lol. It always prioritizes the short term (unless it’s on a personal level for them of course. Every politician looks in the mirror and sees a future President). People could know the political effects of staying in would ultimately be much worse for them, but no one wanted to pull the trigger and incur the short term consequences now. After all, the future is years away! It’s sort of the same with climate change today (on a much larger scale, ofc)
Ironically, staying in Vietnam ended up being seen as LBJ’s biggest failure and cowardice, and or course ultimately is what cost him 1968. If he had withdrawn from Vietnam, and with the rest of his (honestly great) domestic record, he’d almost certainly have been a two term President - and been remembered as one of the best in modern history.
