To whom it may concern. I am descended from Indian immigrants in Trinidad. I am proud. In the commentary, Ms Chandradathsingh referred to the immigrants as docile. I believe that was true! However, more than that! The Indian in India, at the time of the British East India company, and after, in the time of the British Raj, made themselves almost totally obedient, submissive and subservient to the white Englishman. I have no proof of this, just an inference. Almost, I say! Because of the Indian mutiny of 1857. I believe it was because of religious beliefs. Consider the sepoys who served the English in battle, even against there own. In WWI, of the 2.5 million fighting for Britain, 1.5 million were Indian (Google)

Being docile did not mean tame. The Indians learned from the British. They received an education second to none. I have written a story about my returning to India to teach Medicine there after I retired, the grandson of a Coolie Sudr who would not have gone to Medical school in India or be given the opportunity to become what I am. In a way they overcame adversity and many hardships so that their children and grandchildren spread from Grenada to Trinidad to the UK, Canada and the USA as doctors , lawyers, accountants and scientists and Mathematicians. They became cricketers rivalling and beating the Indians from India. These Indian immigrants were the model of what immigrants could and should achieve. Recently I heard Mr. Trump say that we should have more Indian immigrants because they enrich their new countries with new skills and businesses.

U idiots 😂, These coolies r mainly from bhojpuri speaking region of uttar pradesh and bihar, Chief minister or u can say governor of Uttar Pradesh is from sudra caste, same in bihar, we hv reservation for backward class, its 50% of total vacancy advertised, indian immigrants to America is different from Trinidad or Guyana, each year lakhs of people migrated to America for job especially IT sector people, no one goes to Trinidad for job, As far as medicine is concerned we r the top producer of medicine in whole world, almost 50% vaccine produced in india, we hv best doctors in the world, all the neighbouring countries people come to india for medical purpose, i dnt understand y the hell u came here to teach us medicine, that we r already good in, may be government gives u visa or they called u bcoz u r forefathers were indian, we hv a connection with all all our brothers and sisters in the whole world. Please dnt talk like a idiots, Britishers looted as and made our life miserable.

@@nirajsingh8830 Funny thing. I was born in Trinidad and went to Medical School in Canada, practiced in the USA and went to teach young doctors in India after I retired. The young doctors did not think of me as a Sudra. They were very receptive and grateful for the education they received. I still keep in touch with them. Many Trinidadian Indians or POI have achieved greatness in Medicine, the Sciences and Mathematics. We even have a Nobel Prize winner in Literature. Please refer to a book by Patel and Reeves titled The Indian Diaspora.

@@chieftain5391 , Not only in Trinidad, in every part of the world indians r doing excellent from all caste, ask ur students few r definitely fr sudra community it means that they are allowed to pursue their career, but according to u, Sudra r not allowed to study, this is bcoz of ur colonial mindset, still u think western r best, make u human being, earlier ur forefathers were nomads. Anyways Canada is famous for nothing in india, we do MBBS mostly from Russia outside india and engineering and MBA from USA. As far as nobel prize is concerned its won by many indian, first in 1913 in literature, because its a western award we dnt give a damm to nobel prize. Many doctors fr sudra community of india working in USA and other part of the world, get out fr ur colonial hangover, Britishers ruined us, gave us nothing, we already hv ayurvedic medicine fr thousands of years, contribution of gdp was more than 15% before Britishers arrival, also oldest Universities in the world where western came to study 1000 of years back. Its in bihar only, native place of ur forefathers, nalanda University. Britisher didn't take u bcoz u r a sudra but bcoz ur forefathers were excellent in sugarcane production. Still bihar and UP especially bhojpuri region dominates the production of sugar in whole india. More than 50% comes fr these places. Now think y only people fr bhojpuri speaking region, why not fr other part because sudra r everywhere in india, its bcoz of ur talent not because of caste. Get out of colonial mindset and be proud of you forefathers. Last point we had already send corona vaccine to canada few days back and to almost 50 other countries. I think Trinidad is also in the list.

@@nirajsingh8830 don’t know if you live in India but I have lived there and have great memories of that country. The students were polite and respectful to their teachers. They were very industrious probably more than their western counterparts. It’s true that Indians all over the world carry these values to the benefit of the countries of which they are citizens. They are the highest earners in the USA.

As i said above, this made them ideal as indentured servants to replace the newly emancipated african slaves. To undergo the same oppression and exploitation the African slaves were subjected to. Indian indentureship was a better deal to the plantocracy. The Indian brought with them a willingness to serve, and the plantocracy did not have to pay right away, and maybe never, if the indentured died. They were allowed to Bring their culture and religion which in the plantocracy's vision would keep them in line without rebellion, and at the same time made them look after themselves. Immense economic savings to the plantocracy.

It is normal for immigrants to lose their mother tongue (within three or more generations) when they move to a new society with a different language - in which they must integrate in order to survive. This has happened all over the world especially in the New World (North and South America). It is a little bit easier to retain certain cultural customs such as clothing, cuisine, music, and religion - but these all get modified with time. You should be asking how these Indians were able to retain so much of their culture (including some language) despite the severe hardships that they had to undergo. Peace!
