    It's springtime on the farm, and that means BABIES! Baby goats mean a new supply of milk for yogurts, cheeses, and soapmaking. It also means we've got a serious amount of cute hopping around our urban homestead. In this video, I cover some tips and tricks you may need during kidding season, and detail the story of how these little bundles of joy joined us here on the farm.

    We helped out at a small holding just a mile from the house when the children were young it was such fun. We got free veg in return. They had sheep ( and a funny but hopeless sheep dog ) plus a herd of milking goats ( saanans i think ) . Lambing time was great for the children, due to the hopeless sheep dog we had to get all the ewes from a field back to the shed for birthing across a busy road the hard way. The childrens favourite was feeding the lambs. We never did tell them till recently why they all disappeared at 3 months.

    You answered my question about what you do with the baby goats because I feel like alot of people over breed and just add more animals to the problem. But, I am glad that you make sure they have homes before they are even born. Shows you care for them unlike most farmers.

    Great work and thanks for sharing. These types of events for a farmer I'm sure are both amazing and exhausting. As I'm watching my sister in law grow her homestead to include chickens and bees, I'm anxiously waiting for my brother to ok her getting some goats, I'm sure it's just a matter of time. She has such a heart for this type of thing and has been really enjoying your videos too. Take care Anne!

    Hi Anne, It is so nice to see new babies on the farm and to know that they are going to be well looked after and go to responsible people one question though, in the video you say four babies the five babies then back to four. I did not realize that goats had such large litters but is it four or five.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  Před 5 lety

      She had five babies but two of them didn’t make it. Since I filmed this over a few weeks time, the number changed as I was working to revive the two little runts that didn’t make it. Five is definitely unusual. Two to three is more common, four is pretty incredible, five is practically unheard of.

      @@AnneofAllTrades I am so sorry about the other two babies, I seem to remember about the size of goat litters but haven't any idea why I would need to know these statistics, it just seemed to be in the back of my mind (that is a scary place)

      Thanks! We have an urban farm in Seattle, and have 4 acres but only a little over one is really “farmable.” My husband works in tech. Hi Anne, I know these are introductory videos to showcase the variety of things you're involved in at your homestead, but being passionated by the topic, I would have loved to hear a more in-depth explanation of what you do with your male kid goats.
    Maybe being close to an urban center makes you able to have them adopted as pets or farm animals, so like you said, you find places for them before they're born, and if your goal is to just keep one goat, that way you control the input. But the reality in most places around the country and world in general that are not densely populated, as soon as there is two or more goats, male kids are sent to be butchered. It's unsettling for some people, part of the harsh reality and consequence of having milk goats for others...
    Some people just give them to their neighbour butchers, some people prefer doing it themselves after 6 months... Would have liked to hear your take on this subject that is kind of heavy but important if one's goal is to reduce the cognitive disconnect between loving animals, loving using animal produce, loving these little chimpmunk goat kids, but loving the land as well.
    Sorry that was long, but I find your videos are a great platform to exchange as young farmers.
    Flo

    Just wondering if you raise animals as your meat source? If so, is it difficult for you to not think of them as pets. I think that would be challenging. My aunt and uncle were ranchers and some of the animals(Red Brangous cattle) made big impressions on them over the years. You may not know this but some bulls think they can be lap dogs🤣🤣
