NEW Horus Heresy! We play the new core rules in an epic battle between Space Wolves and Emperor's Children.
Games Workshop provided us an advance copy of the new Horus Heresy Age of Darkness box set and invited us to participate in the preview unveiling of the game at Warhammer World. Before we sent the Space Wolves to the UK we played a game with the new core rules. Our resident ball of energy Nick plays against veteran 30K player Darren.
Please note that we only had the core rules at the time of this battle and played with the unit datasheets from the previous edition. As this is our first game with the new core rules we tried our best to be accurate but were learning this edition as we went so not everything is perfect. The goal is to give you a taste of new Horus Heresy.

Note!: Because we had to play this game before we had access to any profiles, a couple of the rules ended up being incorrect now that we have the full rules. Clarifications. Terminators are 2 wounds not 1. Plasma now only rends on a 4+ so you will often get a save against it. Dreadnoughts now have a toughness value and get bonus attacks against non vehicles. So no explosions. Return fire reactions can only be done by defensive weapons on vehicles.
Speaking of your Plasma, the Sergeant's Gets Hot roll meant he would have been able to make his save! AP 4 and his save was definitely better than that!
Yep! That would have been nice to know!
The Terminator wounds, the Dreadnought toughness and wounds, and the plasma stats are all IN the starter set box you guys got. They are at the back of the build guides. Did you guys not read that far? Or threw them away?
Either way, as always, a FANTASTIC production. Always fun to watch the excitement and the beautiful board and models. Can't wait to see more Heresy!
think you missed deflagration on the volkite on overwatch in turn 3 too. FUN GAME!!!!
Also, when the EC Spartan fired its Lascannons in turn 1, it could have rerolled its failed armor penetration rolls since Lascannons have the "Sunder" special rule. That said, great vibe. Looking forward to more of these Horus Heresy Battle Reports.
Sergent: follow my lead. *blows himself up*
The squad: guess we die.
Lol. Probably the most hilarious moment in this one. And there were a few.
Every time there was a cut away for rules like vehicle armor I just nodded and said "I have not played 40k since 4th edition, and all of this is how the game works as far as I know"
Same here. 4th was the last time I played and I’m just sitting here like…. I understood that reference
I have not played since 2nd edition........2nd edition is still the "new" 40k in my mind from RT. :D But this makes me want to play again as beakies is what I started with under RT.
Same here, especially the vehicle damage mechanics really remind me of second edition.......... Good old days😂
@@SargNickFury Heh, same here. Man we're old. 🤣
Wouldn't mind having this guy come back. He did a decent job explaining some of the rules presented in game.
For real, he has to come back. I really enjoyed him as a player and teacher.
Can we be getting a how to play Horus heresy 2nd edition video? Similar to how y’all did 8th edition and 9th edition for 40K.
If this video does well then perhaps
@@PlayOnTabletop Video did well. Now on your perhaps...
I'll be waiting for it
Second this
This would be very helpful
When I was 14 Forgeworld had an insane announcement, that the first campaign book for the Horus Heresy was launching as was 4 full legions worth of rules and models. I wanted so badly to play but didn't have the money or a group to play with. A whopping 12 years later, I am finally going to be putting together my Ultramarines and playing with my wargaming club. Its been a long wait, and man I am so excited to share my love of this story with every person I play with.
Wow. This looks way more fun than base 40K?
The added complexity in the tanks really make them... actually act and feel like tanks?
And the reactions turn the game into a much more dramatic, cinematic battle.
Me likey.
I like the fact that it pairs rules back. No strategems no CP re rolls. Seems a more realistic way of play than 40k which can be daunting for players with all the added rules.
it makes it very generic though, i can barely see any flavour between armies, the game just seems to be 2 armies walking towards each other
@@Irongrip09 they're both playing without the new army books, which have the legion specific rules and units. It feels painfully generic because they're not using any of the flavor
@@spu313 are they all releasing at the same time? Or staggered like their other systems?
@@Irongrip09 all the books - core rules, traitors, and loyalists release tomorrow - the lack of rules in this video is because the game was recorded ages ago
@@spu313 they actually only have the Space Marines loyalist and traitor books released. My Mechanicus book isn't out yet 👉👈
GW: "30K is about the civil war in the Imperium that saw Space Marine Legions fight each other. Space Marine Space Marines Space Marines."
Me: "So I can play Hereteks, you say?"
It will be interesting to see a "7th edition" 40k game again. It's been awhile.
Still hoping for Space Marine Steve vs Chaos Marine Steve narrated by Steve. If we can work in storm trooper Steve, I'll take it.
They have to do this!
The Age of Steve.
@@robertcapestany6019 Stevehammer 40,000: Age of Stevemar
No.
It's the skeleton of 7th edition but soooo many small and cool little changes (tactical squads are one of the only scoring units, they gain Stubborn and FNP6+ if on an objective), Multimeltas are TL now, etc etc.
I just love how nostalgic this feels. Good to see you again templates, AV, IC joining units... and so on. Missed, not forgotten!
Looking forward for more HH games! some campaign would be cool (please be Prospero lol)
Characters in units feels so good, it feels so weird in 40k to have a bodyguard unit stand back and not save their leader from a charge just because they were 3mm out of range
The 3 rules that I recall always leading to arguments back in 2nd to 4th edition when I played old school rules was line of sight (can I see it or does it count as cover), templates placement and line of sight weapons arc of fire. It’s far better to just have simple rules.
@@Dragon_Fyre I've been playing since 3 ed, never had any arguments with anyone about templates. Also 8th and 9th ed. did nothing to make rules simpler and the rule bloat got even worse than the times of decurions etc.
@@Dragon_Fyre I hate arguing with an opponent over templates. Same with facing.
@@Dragon_FyreI’ll take complicated but dynamic and thematic over simple but bland and boring any day
thats cool they brought back the old ways of taking on vehicles, always loved the front side and rear armor values, adds to the tactics.
Before 9th the last edition I played was 3rd into 4th and I must say, I really miss the vehicle toughness rules being the way that it is here in the HH game.
It made trying to destroy vehicles much more interesting.
Been playing Heresy for many years and I’m unapologetically hyped for the new edition, it all looks great. And I know you got some rules wrong, but honestly 30k is more about the spirit of fun and that came through in spades, really great video and I look forward to more. Cheers!
As someone who was mostly active under 2nd ed I love how much of what Nick's enjoying is 2nd ed resurgent
I have missed 7th Ed since the advent of 8th and this definitely scratches that itch. Love the reactions mechanic too.
I love the ruleset in this. brings back memories of 3rd edition, and sooooo much more fun and tactical.
That EC Praetor was a real…Guitar Hero 😎😎😎
I love the paint style of the emperor's children, simple yet still nice
bit off topic but I always like seeing these types of channels get sponsors, especially if it's something that's totally different from Warhammer. idk makes me feel like the world takes this seriously as an industry so keep it up!
This totally sparked my interest to start playing Horus Heresy
Thanks for doing this. We need more heresy content.
Can we get a “How to play Horus Heresy” video in the future? I feel like I’d need that before committing to playing it
Wooo!
JT is back in the studio!
Awesome to hear he's back.
And an awesome game to see play out!
When I heard "5 or 6 explode you" when shooting a Dread I was like "Wait, what ?"
oh man I'm loving the production/editing on these last videos. This episode and the Deathwatch vs Tyranids have been super enjoyable
Thank you for the well edited video! Really helped me understand the new Horus Heresy game.
Good stuff! I like the music, the effects, the quality of the board & armies as well as the overall upbeat mood & willingness to go back & call yourself out on stuff you might have misplayed. A really impressive BatRep, subscribed.
Great introduction to Horus Heresy, would love to see a how to play video. Darren was a great guest, hope to see him again!
Fantastic battle report, the enthusiasm really shows through! It’s shocking how much *simpler* HH 2.0 appears compared to 9th edition, and I mean that in a good way.
I've just taken delivery of Age of Darkness, but daunting to learn a new game as never played before but very excited after watching this video
It's definitely easier in the long run than learning the million strategems in 40k and when to use them.
Honestly, these rules are way more interesting than 40k, maybe just because it's different or simpler. Hope you guys make more of these!
This was my favorite episode ever. Hours heresy is the reason I got into the hobby. I would love to see more.
Never played Horus Heresy before and I hand to say this game mechanic is just amazing! A few questions.... Do terminators just have 1 wound? Also do bolters only have 1 shot? Can’t wait to try this game once I can finance some models soon 😊 This report is also really helpful and brilliant.
Terminators had 1 wound in the previous edition, but in the new edition, they have 2. Bolters are like they are currently in 40k in that they get 1 shot at 24" range or 2 shots if within half that range. However, models wielding Rapid Fire weapons in 30k can't charge if they shot with those weapons.
@@vashoom Yes, units intending to charge would draw and shoot Pistols and then charge. That's why it is so important to have pistols in units.
The terminators have 2 wounds as they should have known as their stats are in the box they got early
LET’S FUCKING GO A HORUS HERESY BATTLE REPORT!
Hopefully Imperial Fists vs Iron Warriors next time?
Just started building and painting Sons of Horus and I'm excited to try playing! More battle reports would be great for helping me get my head around the rules!
Thanks for the video. Love to see how the new rules play out.
This was really awesome! Love seeing some HH in the Play On style. Hope we see more of this some day!
Cool! Enjoyed the video! I might suffer through my allergy from super glue and actually put together my World Eaters with Angron and Kharn :( Love the reaction rules. They make me want to play again...
High quality content as always. This is a nice change from 40k from time to time. More of this and the return of "Kill Team: Challenger" against Steve would be awesome. I miss seeing people take all of Steve's poor minis.
I love how wholesome the cereal sponsorship is, so much better than back when like every game channel was sponsored by ForHims lol
This was so fun. I hope I'm not too late to say, I'd love to see more!!
We do hope to do more 30K in the future
@@PlayOnTabletop hope you do!
Excellent game! I really enjoyed how you explained the rules and kept the game entertaining for the viewers. Looking forward to seeing more 30K games.
guys, make this weekly! Such a cool game!
“They are never by themselves” well, unless you choose to deploy them like that, some characters thrive on it, like corax, kurze or moritats
That was a fun video, nick, you're awesome as always, this was a fun match up
yess, please do more of this. I love these rules
I’m excited for this just because 30k is my favorite lore time, I’m yet to play a game but you guys make u detests ding the rules simple and make me wanna try
Loved the rules correction during editing!
I was first introduced to 3rd eddition warhammer so I got a nice nostalgia from this!!
This looks like a great system! The reactions seem pretty similar to how some of the command abilities work in Age of Sigmar. Glad to see GW continue to experiment with stuff like that. I wish that the HH system had Xenos stuff, as I have no interest in playing Space Marines, but it is what it is.
Good news is that Space Marines will not be the only faction. I really despise how GW has really only pushed the Marines, but in the game there will also be Mechanicum (which is different from Mechanicus, lots of robots available), Solar Auxilia (like Guard but with better armor and weapons), Talons of the Emperor (Custodes and Sisters of Silence), Knights, and army lists for Imperial Militia and Warp Cults. So if Space Marines aren't your jam, there are other factions to play!
... though if you want Xenos specifically then yeah, you're out of luck
@@Rune3100 Heh, yeaaah, I play Aeldari in 9th. Or Drukhari. I also have been known to play a human faction, but that's Adepta Sororitas. I have been honestly considering Alpha Legion, but Craftworlds is my jam and I'm admittedly not in a huge rush to change lanes.
I loved the plasma marines offing themselves when faced with terminators
Awesome match and hope to see more HH!
I love the HH books and the new edition. If you made more of these, I, and others I'm sure, would be very happy to see them!
I feel so good to see again the tanks turned in the good direction! Perfect game and report guys! Thank you
SO excited to play our first game of this! :D
I’d love to see tak with some 30k ultramarines. The heresy Guilliman is awesome
excellent video guys. Love the horus heresy content.
I'm a Kill Team player and "Big Hammer" just mostly looks unappealing to me but this... this looks fun. Like, a lot of fun.
Damn dooooods each video just gets better and better I've said it before but all hail the mighty emperor editing team, the production is 11/10 especially given the handicap of sending the models off and half the rules.
Thank you so much! With the potential criticism of getting rules wrong being this rushed and the general rush nature of this all it is amazing to get this comment. It really helps us keep doing what we do.
1/2 the rule? They got the rules for the new units in the starter box they received. It’s pretty poor that all these content creators got so much wrong with so much time with this stuff before release
@@highmarshalbalian680 keep campaigning champ.
Its great to have JT back! I hope to see him calling games and playing games with his drukhari soon!
Great game, loved watching it - this brings back the brutality of the grim dark future of warhammer universe.
I really like how the game rules and mechanics keep you engaged in your opponents turn.
Would love to see more!
- Suthey
Really enjoy your battle report.
I absolutely loved this episode. I hope we get to see more! And I hope to see the emperor's golden boys on the board in the 30th Millennium! Play on and play well!
Id love to see you guys come back to this system one day, horus heresy is gorgeous
As a single father to a beautiful daughter who has to work two jobs and sometimes don't eat for a week to provide for my daughter I want to thank you guys so much for these videos. It prolly wasn't the best idea to read my daughter 40 k lore to help her sleep but she loved it. Since we can't afford anything and trust me I have looked. I tried to get her used things but I just can't afford it. So these videos we go crazy for. We draw our armies on paper and old monopoly dice to stay with yous. So from richest father in the world thank you.
Excellent video as always 😁❤️👍🏻
I’d definitely watch more Horus Heresy 👍🏻
Loved that! Would love more!
That Emperor's Child channeled Eddie Munson! His solo was epic!
Looking forward to more 30k batreps and learning with you.
Wow. Excellent video. The models and terrain couldn't be more perfect.
I wasn't interested in HH before but this is a great showcase of its strenghts. There is a strong flavor of an old-timey civil war. Both sides being well matched and just duking it out slowly; eking out a minor victory. (Kinda overlaps very much with the reports from Russia-Ukraine war next door to us).
Would definitely love to watch an epic, multi-side (and side-shifting) Horus Heresy storyline series on the channel, if all the battles are like this. Regards from Poland!
Glad you enjoyed it! We hope to do more!
Love the 30k Space Wolves!! Can't wait to paint mine up!! 😁
yes Horus Heresy is what ive wanted to see you guys play forever
This was engaging!
I can't help but wonder what modern 40k armies back ported into HH2.0 would be like...
so many rules from older editions makes sense since its 30k but still realy brings back memories of older editions
Would love to see more Heresy battle reports!!
Horus Heresy is back!! Favourite game on my favourite Channel!
I love this I wish they would play more heresy.
Great game! It was cool to see Nick play space marines. We need to see Heritic Steve run the world eaters or iron warriors!
Yay JT is back! Glad to see him again
I was gonna say frosted flavored cereal 🥣 like being cold 🥶 with the wolves 🐺 but taste of victory works too!
Great video guys really helps get into the spirit for 30k
Good to see JT back, miss him and his awesome commentary
Awesome work as always
The EC with the guitar starts playing an epic melody of bad assitude then gets promptly smoked.
Glad to see JT back!!
it reminds me the third edition. Nostalgia kicks in!!!!!
Only ever played 9th edition but this game system looks amazing and would love to see more!
How come you guys never did more of these? Was really good to watch.
We only have what's painted in this video and have not found the time to paint more. We are planning a big Prospero battle in the future
I'm all in on the new Heresy. After hanging out at the last Adepticon with some HH events and people it looked like the fun place to be.
Awesome video!
Great game! I'm just heading out to pick up my box
As a newer 40k player, this was so much easier to follow and understand. Glad I picked ultra marines, I may play some 30k as well now.
There are complexities to this ruleset like 40K but as most Legions function very similar and there are universal special rules it can be quite a streamlined experience once you get a hang of it.
Yes!! I would love to see more heresy in my life. Plz.
Will this lead to a 30k in 30 minutes series?
This looks great. Can't wait to try HH!
There's my homie Darren rep'n the West... can't wait for Kippers
So its 40k 5th edition with some nice new rules .I like it and finally I will use again the that green markers and tokens .
this seems like a perfect mix of 7th and 4th
Awesome battle report! Where did I get the terrain craters from?
