When you go from 0% and build a house you have grown 100%, that means you only have to build 2 houses the next year to grow 100%, insane growth from a low base is quite easy, south africa was stuck in the middle income trap for years, looks like their solution was to go back to been poor to solve that problem🎉

I hear you. Going from 1 building to 10 buildings is 1000% increase. When you go from 1million buildings to 2million that's only 100% increase.... So yes the starting points also influence statistics... Zimbabweans have a better standard of living in Zimbabwe than in South Africa. My relatives in SA always live in slums with no electricity, no jobs, high crime. In Zimbabwe, they most likely own a house, have a business or their parents do, self sufficient with electricty and water, and there’s little to no crime. Zimbabwe is far from perfect, but for Zimbabweans, it is one of the best places to be in Africa.

There is a lot of construction going on, but very little to nothing in upgrading water and electricity. Many households there have gone to solar power as the national grid is nonfunctional for much of the time, a lot worse than Eskom. That does not mean that Eskom deserve some sort of praise. As a Zimbabwean I can not comment much on this subject directly.. Yes we have very many issues and things going wrong in Zimbabwe ..its all too easy for people to look at everything going wrong only...
The positive things in Zimbabwe .. How many South Africans know that probably just about every home in Zimbabwe is mortgage free and paid off/for in full and those building are doing it on a pay as you go basis...building in Zim has been booming by those in the diaspora and at home..google rural Zimbabwe luxury homes..most look better than city homes.. Rural land and farmland in Zimbabwe is free.. So the new black farmers ..whatever farming equipment, livestock I believe that too is mortgage free and owned outright, same in rural areas.. The cars on the road are not higher purchase but paid for in cash.. There are ordinary people into mining, business , everyone is husling..informal trading to make ends meet..i believe the same goes for business premises..they too are owned outright!.. I can rem a debate a few years ago between Zimbabweans and South Africans along these lines. I don"t know any Zimbabwean family and friends who has a mortgage in Zim . Maybe in recent years there might be some but I don"t know anyone personally and I know many people ..
How many South Africans or even Westerners of working age can say they have a paid off home. Car, furnture, clothes, knickers?😂
We have been under UsA/Western illegal sanctions for about 23 years..we had to learn quickly "how to make the road by walking it"..yes many of us scattered around the world... Does anyone know how liberating it is not to be a slave to the lender?.. Yes we are still in a situation, rotten corrupt leaders.. Like someone said ..when you hit rock bottom the only way is up.. Imagine when things turn around.. Ours should be a model for most of Africa, the world to study and learn as an alternative to the aggressive capitalists system run by greedy western banks.. Western banks took flight when we were put under illegel sanctions..but we survived and some are thriving.. I hope we will not re-adopt the old systems of debt and follow the old foolishness crippling so many around the world with the high interest rates and greedflation going on.. Thats the positives of illegal western sanctions on Zimbabweans..

Created a table showing the GDP per capita growth (annual %) comparison between SA and ZIM from 1971 to 2020 which shows the various low growth bases both countries have been
influenced by in certain periods of time.
SA in the 80's with internal conflict and international sanctions and Zuma power from 2009 to Feb 2018. COVID was 2020.
ZIM showed economic resilience in the 70's and 80's despite the war but Mugabe power from 1990 and land seizures from 1999 showed economic collapse.

Zim's basic education was far superior to that od SA. Those kids grew up with th ekowlwdge of how to make a plan. this is still evident in the ZIm citizens (legal and illegal) that came to SA and are doing well for themselves. Zambia has developed tremendously and ex SA farmers who went there are loving it and doing well - our loss and their gain.
Endless paperwork rules and regulations in SA business makes small business worthless and a pain in SA. the local govt is overstaffed, incompetent arrogant unhelpful - generally 90% useless and grossly overpaid.
The ANC has systematically destroyed anything that worked efficiently in SA and it will take years to get back to any semblance of truly effective governance with the idiot cadres in place. All municipal and govt. employees need to be vetted for job knowledge, efficiency, effectiveness, competence, attitude and honesty to keep their job. Many will fail which means new people will have to be hired to replace them. It should also mean that with the right people in place the workforce could be cut by two thirds!

Most Zimbos come into the country using the 90 days visitors visas and use truck drivers to renew them every 3 months. Stop abusing statistics, all those countries are growing from a low base. RSA's 1% in rand terms could equal Zimbabwe's 2500%. Only Nigeria and Egypt can compete with RSA.

Not entirely true, Zimbabweans had their own writing stemming from Egyptian hieroglyphics..

Agreed. However, if I look at the work ethic between South Africans and our neighbours, there is a stark contrast. The anc and eff have indoctrinated their followers to focus more on blaming others for their problems, than actually trying to be part of a solution. This won't change until the rot is removed at the top.
