    I love my E90 330i (N52) - no direct injection or fuel pump issues. One of the last BMW NA 6-cyl engines ever made.

      Kiwi TeeTee the n52 has all the strengths of the n54. I dont agree the minor beefier construnction of the n54 outeighs the negatives like direct injection of the n54 that keads to needing difficult cleaning. Thats why bmw went back etc. My n52 has 173000 miles and has never been opened or intake cleaned, runs very smooth and strong.

    10:04 the lip on the head gasket is there to separate the cyl.head (Al) from the block (Mg) to avoid corrosion. The can live quite happily together as long as there is no water between them, eg. you're not making a galvanic reaction... Mg and Al are about 0.7V apart in that regard, so this is why 1/4 of the N52 workshop manual is 'dry the hole out', 'make sure the surfaces are dry' etc....

    Make no mistakes, the N52 is very reliable. There are still lots of 325i cars running for 24h races. For the N54 I can imagine the engineers went on the conservative side and left a lot more safety in strength than actually needed because they did their last Turbo car in the 80's. But tuners fear not because there are good indicators that the B58 (340i etc.) does have a lot of tuning potential that even exceeds the N54's.

      i believe only the rods and crankshaft are but i could be wrong. either way very strong setup, records on completely stock motor with a large single turbo have 800+ whp. The rb26 is known to hold 600whp, so the n54 is no joke. 2jz i believe is 1000whp on stock motor

    • @4ujkdguy
      @4ujkdguy Před 7 lety

      2jzgte about 750whp is the limit to be reliable so 800 plus with extremely good tune, N54 looks like they are cast, but could be forged don't know!

    Can you replace in a BMW 128i his N51 engine with a N52 and have no problem down the road ?

  • @FamilytripsNevents
    @FamilytripsNevents Před 4 lety

    Read current reviews and they say avoid BMW's with N54 twin turbo engines. Maybe most failures are not with the actual block!

  • @seasonedtoker
    @seasonedtoker Před rokem

    So you throw the N52 head on an N54 and then what? How would you make it work when valves are bigger, bore is smaller and pistons have small recesses? And the dreaded valvetronic, the 335i ECU doesn't even have the hardware support for valvetronic (the module that was once separate but then became part of the DME). This actually doesn't work even on paper.

      They are rigid as hell, because they run so hot from the factory they desperately need cooling at the top of the sleeve to pull heat out despite being direct injection

    For a port injected turbo build why don't you use a n52 head with a n54 short block ?🤷. People Frank and build the iron block M50 / m52 all the time.
