Remembering The Prequel Star Wars Video Games
Vložit

- In our largest video to date, we go through a stack of incredible video games all based off one of the most beloved eras in Star Wars: the Prequels. Ranging from Republic Commando all the way to Force Unleashed and even hidden gems like Clone Wars, they defined many of our childhoods. Now, all these years later, it's time to kick back and sift through the gems... and the duds.

As a PC gamer for the last decade, I cant describe how much I miss the smell of opening a new game - reminds me of being a kid - sounds weird but surely somebody can relate🤣
I relate to this.
The fresh plastic smell. Yes. ❤
@@tristanbackup2536 but its not a normal plastic smell, its new game smell, the booklet and everything
I can relate 😭 it's nostalgia
@@Jimmystannnand the kind of weird texture some og the booklets had, when your scratched your nail on it
Jedi Power Battles will always hold a special place in my heart.
Literally the first Star Wars game I have ever played and I absolutely loved it.
The Yoda laugh from that game is ingrained in my mind.
Revenge of the Sith was such a classic game. Not all of these were “great” games but they hold a lot of nostalgia for me. Jedi Power Battles!
6:03 "Just write a book, someone!' I would like to let you know that in fact, there are like five books that continue the story of Delta Squad written by Karen Travis, highly recommend you look them up!
i felt this
I need to find these books you speak of
Right? I had to replay that part to make sure I heard that right. I read all those books so many times as a kid
Revenge of the Sith always felt like somewhat of a spiritual successor to Jedi Power Battles for me. Absolutely love those games!
Deep cut: it always irked me that Adi Gallia was sort of replaced by Shaak Ti on the Jedi Council in terms of importance, because Adi's killed off-screen. Her character was mad fun in JPB.
Jedi Power Battles is so fun but difficult as hell for me
Both great games! Jedi Power Battles is probably my favorite Star Wars game of all time. So many great memories
Me and my friends at school played jedi power battles religiously it was so fun but super difficult.
THANK YOU! I have always said this!
Glad I found your channel man! I’m in my 30s so this is a great trip down memory lane just to remember just how good the games were we had back in the day.
Happy to have you on board!
Same! But I'm 27 lol. Got an Xbox for Christmas of 02 (I was 8) JSRF is still vying for my top 5. Then star wars games happened. Then halo happened. Then kotor happened and so on (order of me discovering them)
Star Wars Bounty Hunter is to this day my favorite game of all time.
That game has a special place in my heart. I was obsessed with the mandalorians way back when it dropped, so it felt like it was made for kid-me.
I have it on PS4💯💯
Disney should either make a remaster or greenlight a sequel featuring Boba Fett. if possible, get the same writer and game director that made Bounty Hunter so damn good. with today's tech and with the bottomless pockets of the house of mouse, it would be amazing
"I'm the best, always was"
-Jango Fett
Truly an amazing game and just a good piece of Star Wars media. A nice simple but exciting prequel, to how Jango become the template. It had good original characters. Roz is such a good balance to Jango with Montross being an excellent rival.
I remember getting an OG Xbox, Star Wars Obi Wan and Jedi Outcast for Christmas way back when... What a time to be a child!
Remember buying Kotor with some pocket money a little later because it was Star Wars and it looked cool 😂 Still probably my favourite game series ever!
I miss the 2000s era for Star Wars games!
I am so bloody happy to see Clone Wars video game being recognized. I remember when my dad and I went to best buy and bought and Xbox this was the game came with it. I typically didn't love most games where you were predominately using a Vehicle, but that game hit different. So much fun.
I genuinely miss the Golden Age of Star Wars. So many great games.
Literally same bro. Highly underrated game
The few episodes where you weren’t in a ship it was legendary. Or shooting the tiny tiny droids in your big ass ship.
Same here man
I will always remember how much fun the multiplayer was in that game.
Wasn't it one of the first games launched on an Xbox? My step-dad bought me one when they first launched and I remember getting halo and the clone wars game lol
The clone wars and revenge of the sith videos games were so freaking fun, loved this video. Prequels will always be my favorite still remember my dad bringing home Phantom menace on VHS for me, cherished memories.
I miss The clone wars so much
man we didnt have much money and my dad saved to be able to take me to see phantom menace. one of my favorite memories
There's an entire Republic Commando book series that follows both Omega and Delta squad. It's insanely good.
Theres a guy I just found on youtube that does an amazing audiobook version of the first 2 RC books. They never made an official audiobook version of any of them but the production quality of the one on youtube is as good as the other Audible star wars audiobooks.
Replayed Bounty Hunter a few weeks ago and I forgot how crushingly difficult that game could be at times.
The Bando Gora...
As someone who grew up playing Star Wars the Clone Wars and Halo CE a lot, those games made for some of the most fondest memories of my childhood especially with the multiplayer modes. I must confess that I always ended up skipping over the last Rhen Var mission with the scary ghosts by getting my brother to do it instead 🤣
While there are two shows named after the Clone Wars era, one from 2003 and one from 2008, both of which aired on Cartoon Network, Pandemic's The Clone Wars actually predated both of them, instead being a tie-in to Attack of the Clones. This was the very first time we saw into the future of the war before the dedicated project that spawned the Tartakovsy show, the Dark Horse Comics, and many other media like Republic Commando that's on display here today. I can confirm that it is a tank sim first and foremost, and the controls are not simple. I wasn't aware there was another version, though. All I could find was the Tetris bundle
Jedi Starfighter was my first PS2 game. I can still vividly remember the night when my parents took me to walmart to buy the console and this game. Very deep and fond memories. I was disappointed to see that it's not available on PC. I havent played it since 02-03 and would love to give it another go.
Star Wars Phantom Menace was my first ever real video game (after pinball), followed closely by Racer. Used to sit on my dad's lap and play every Saturday. I've since replayed both multiple times, great memories.
These made up a bulk of my childhood gaming. Along with Halo 1, these got me into gaming. I remember wondering what else was in store for us after the Force Unleashed since the new tech was gonna give us good Star Wars games. Boy was I disappointed when we barely got anything and any projects I heard about were cancelled. Disney giving EA exclusive rights to make and publish Star Wars games was another slap in the face.
If you want some more Star Wars nostalgia. Some of the movie DVDs come with Xbox demos with ROTS having a build of Battlefront 2, Clone Wars Vol 1 (if I'm not mistaken) having an early build of Battlefront 1, etc.
Jedi Fallen Order released recently. It’s a really good single player Star Wars game by Respawn Entertainment, the people who made Titanfall 2 and Apex
@@why8308 Jedi Fallen Order is a big step in the right direction and I love it. With EA not having exclusive rights, we are going to a see a lot of new Star Wars content in the coming years. Kotor Remake, Jedi Survivor, and few other companies making Star Wars games
And all the younglings today wonder why us old gamers are nostalgic for the past. Sure, the graphics weren't life-like, but these games had so much personality to make up for it.
I really enjoyed Star Wars Obi Wan, I beat it a few months ago and didn’t have any nostalgic attachment to it. It’s light saber combat is actually pretty fun. I think I may be the only person out there that likes it lol
I have very fond memories of that game . Just you and me like it .
Unpopular opinion: Revenge of the Sith has the best lightsaber combat in a game.
Jedi Academy is great but it's super frenetic. Jedi Outcast is a lot of rolling around and slashing people in the back. Looks amazing though 🤷♂️.
Thoughts?
I played nearly all of these on Xbox as as kid. If it was StarWars, I bought it. The StarWars games were the reason I wanted an Xbox and then I didn’t really play anything else for years until I bought a PS5. This was really cool to see these all in one place again. I’m 27 now, and I wish I’d never let go of these at the garage sales through the years.
- Revenge of the sith actually has some pretty decent saber combat, (played the PS2 and GBA versions, enjoyed both)
- I haven't finished Republic Commando on PS4 but that game speaks for itself,
- Love the Force unleashed, am now playing it on switch which is a completely different game.
Switch version of Force Unleashed is actually the Wii version in HD... which is a super weird choice, but the Wii version was a pretty good game in its own right.
Is it good on Switch tho? I remember playing it on Wii and being really disappointed after playing the PS3 demo for hours.
I think there’s not even the black lightsaber crystal in this version?
I’m just getting into my first TFU playthrough and oh my god it’s so much fun. Just ragdolling squad after squad all over the place
@@pugetsoundwaves Yeah I knew that going in it's a better game than the console counterpart in a lot of ways, it's also much longer. The PS3/360 version of TFU has 9 levels and can be beaten fairly quickly.
The switch version has about 10 hours of gameplay apparently, and I have yet to finish it.
One small gripe about the switch version, you can't use the force to throw enemies upwards, and the euphoria physics are a little less present, meaning enemies don't ragdoll as humorously.
That said the boss fights are better overall, there's motion controls, and it runs buttery smooth on switch.
@@EonHSD I'm enjoying it anyway and Yeah idk if the darksaber is present in the switch version but 🤷.
Enemies don't ragdoll AS much but they still do,
Boss fights are better to me,
The story is mostly the same but the performances are a mixed bag, many think they are first takes and they went with it.
Overall it's a star wars game that is worth playing.
Always felt like i missed out on jedi academy. I did play the absolute hell out of jedi knight II: Jedi outcast though, the multiplayer was way ahead of its time.
I used to always play Episode 3 on my ps2 and when I saw that Xbox one finally had it on backwards compatibility my heart was racing
Jedi academy is one of my favorite games all time
7:43 You can find the entire run of this animated show on CZcams. It’s like 2 hours, it’s genuinely fantastic
Jedi Starfighter was my favorite, Adi Gallia became my favorite background Jedi because of that game and the comics about the pre-prequel era
The old lord of the rings games from that time were amazing aswell matty you should cover them in an episode
Agreed 😆
This is the first video I've seen on your channel and I'm subbed. Dude this video is so freaking awesome! I actually just picked up The Force Unleashed on the Wii and you hyped me up man. I've never played it. This is gonna be AWESOME!!!
This came up in recommended and I was surprised to see you, Matty! I'm subscribed to your main channel but had no idea that this one existed. Man, I've been out of the loop
Hey man just subscribed, your video took me down my childhood since most of these games were part of my gaming experience. To this day, I still think that Bounty Hunter is the best Star Wars game ever and really solidified my favorite character in the star wars universe being Jango Fett!! Thanks for the vid man!!
Republic commando would be a super awesome VR game. Maybe a special mod to turn it into Death Troopers
The Star Wars the Clone Wars double pack was mine and my brother's first xbox game. A looooot of love for that game.
I CAN'T believe you didn't talk about the "outtakes" you can watch in Jedi Starfighter. It was SO funny.
Aren't those in Bounty Hunter as well? So funny.
Matty, dude… sometimes as you talk I just hear my thoughts. I know that sounds weird. But you voice almost exactly how I feel a lot. Love your content man. And the level of positivity you bring to this corner of the internet. Thank you.
Very enjoyable Matty, thank you for the positive look at each! It's fascinating to me that initially the then new prequels were absolutely loved to death once out at the theaters, then over time fashionably hated along with the incredible author Mr Lucas himself simply for committing himself to creating them & now they are slowly becoming kool again. Time has shown the 6 masterpiece & complete original movies are the best & stand the test of time as they should & the games left behind based on the prequels have much to love, I own them all proudly!
Episode 3 was my childhood. Replaying the order 66 mission and playing Versus with my family and friends was so much fun!!! Republic Commando was also goated!! Jedi Knight Jedi Academy is phenomenal I definitely agree. Pretty much had a soft spot for all the games mentioned here, thank you for bringing back the amazing memories :)
I have such fond memories of The Clone Wars on GameCube, such a fun game. Also a while ago, my brother found his PS2 copy of Jedi Star-fighter in his room. Old Star Wars games are so unique and I can’t wait for my physical copy of The Force Unleashed on switch to arrive.
Love the videos, found you while looking up classic Batman games. Hard to believe your channel is less than a year old while your content feels like you’ve been on CZcams for years. Keep it up!
Well, I've done this for over a decade in total. I run another CZcams channel called MrMattyPlays which has been around for quite a while. As much as I'd like to say I am a natural, I had a lot of learning to do ;)
He has been on CZcams for years. He has another channel called mrmattyplays, where he goes over gaming news and rumors. He's also on a podcast called defining duke's 😃
Love it when I’m wrong for all the right reasons! Thank you both for the amazing info, subbing right now
Love the nostalgic talk. Thank you friend!
Man the Episode III game is such an underrated VS experience. Just a lot of fun with the PS2 version back in the day.
Matty, buy some "Bestine" Rubber Cement Thinner from online or a Art Supply store & safety remove all traces of any old game case or cartridge stickers for good, with zero damage to plastic cases or printed paper inserts. The only safe solution!
I miss when games came with booklets for manuals. I knew exactly how to play my games by reading that on the car ride back.
cool videos mate. love the box details, and overall it’s a complete - and nostalgic - guide to all these good and not so good games. Even for Star Wars die hard fans like me it’s useful cause I didn’t got to play them all, so it’s a source to discover some cool gems.
Only nitpick here, the PS2 Episode III game deserved more screentime! What an enjoyable and well crafted title, for a tie-in it was a surprise. For Jedi combat lovers it was one of the most satisfying games.
Loving the Retro Rebound content, thanks Matty!!
hell yeah, thank you, I really need this today.
Dayum Matt this channel exploded. Been watching for awhile what a grind, and without making super clickbait.
Awesome video and content :) found your channel a little bit ago and helped inspire me to rebrand and setup my youtube channel again after 7 years away
I used to rent these games from Blockbuster to play with my brother. Seems really strange looking back that we had a week at a time to make the most of a game's campaign and multiplayer.
good idea to put out a video like this with kenobi just coming out. loving the series so far. good day to everyone reading.
I remember when I was five years old I went to one of my friend's house and we played Revenge of The Sith and it was so fun! I miss those old days as well as playing the original Battlefront game on my Dad's old PC.
These games are awesome miss how detailed game manuals use to be. Also i remember playing the lego games/ bf2 and revenge of the sith growing up as well as force unleashed always wanted that bounty hunter game/republic commando and kotor.
The original clone wars game slaps. I beat it on all difficulties and got all collectibles back when I had no access to guides on CZcams, just me myself and I.
i remember playing the demo version of star wars starfighter at the store. such a small moment of my life but still remember it
This better have Jedi Power Battles
EDIT: Damn, I'm disappointed
I warned ya! Some omissions for sure 😂
@@retrorebound8887 It's alright, I wasn't really expecting it lol. A mention would've been enough 🤺
ROTS was the first DS game I owned. God I loved it and play it on my 3DS every now and then. The unlockable ships (iirc) was my jam.
The Clone Wars was my first video game. The Clone Wars/Tetris bundle came with my Xbox when I was about 6. I have fond memories of staying up all night with my dad playing the multiplayer modes. Playing it as an adult, it’s only about a 4 hour play through, but it mentioned cool lore, and was the first time we saw some vehicles in the universe. The droid tank that shows up on Kashyyyk in BF2 and Episode 3 (the movie) first appeared in this game. Despite being a short game, the story is quite good. I’m glad to see someone finally mention it.
Force Unleashed 1 & 2 are so fantastic! I just started collecting PS3 and these were some of the first ones I went after. I played these for HOURS! Fun times man!
There is answers of the cliff hangers in republic commando the legends books, they made a full book series on the game starting from the beginning of the game to I think the start of the empire
Jedi Power Battles, OG Battlefront, and Revenge of the Sith were the games I most associate with.
I too like positivity here. It’s an extremely rare thing in the Star Wars fandom
Loved most of these games! Gee, even manuals take me back. Part of the experience of buying a new game was reading the manual and taking in all the pictures, I’d usually do it on the way home 😂
I remember renting out some of these from blockbuster and later buying them because they were so good.
Even tho it was skipped, Star Wars Pod Racer on N64 will always be a personal favorite of mine ❤
Seeing my Jedi Outcast Trailer in the opening of this video was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one 🙂
Dude, your trailer was awesome!
I put a little extra footage over it from the games in the video, but the base was already fantastic!
Used the same music for the Obi Wan playthrough vid. Really great job, hope you make more of them.
Marty, can’t help that you missed talking about Super Bombad Racing? Had this game as a kid and have a lot of find memories with it.
Didn't know you had another channel so imagine my surprise when mrmattyplays shows up
I remember both the ROTS games fondly. I thought seeing the story beats repeated along with the changes in gameplay was really cool as a kid!
SW3 for gba was my first starters game and game I think I beat both story lines 3 times within a month, such an underrated star wars game ❤
i spent the most time on starfighter 1 as a kid and loved it.
Great retrospective
Epsiode III the game was the GOAT! Me and my best friend at the time played the shit out of it! Damn we were 10 back then and now we’re in our late 20’s. How time has flown by!
Revenge of the Sith was such a good game. The ps2 one was amazing, but also that Game Boy game was and is so fun.
Golden age of Star Wars Games were from 2002-08, best one I played was OG Battlefront 2
Republic heroes is extremely underrated I replayed the crap out of that as a kid
I played episode 3 on my PS2 so many times. The fighting game mode was epic.
I got the same promotion as my first Xbox. I remember the game having difficult levels that I just couldn’t beat. But the roaming mode and multiplayer were fun.
Love these videos!
You left out the best prequel area Star Wars game, Star Wars Super Bombad Racing
Thank you aspyer from putting many of these on modern consoles. Especially switch. Kotor on switch, a hand held console, is a long held childhood dream come true. I would have killed to play kotor on my psp, on the go, as a kid.
Love your channels bro.
SW : The Clone Wars is really an underrated game, i wish they could remake it on PS4/5 like they did to republic commando
Matty, love the videos man! Keep ‘‘em coming. I would love to start creating content like this as well as I still have a ton of my retro games in the vault. If you don’t mind me asking, are you pulling the gameplay footage from CZcams or are you capturing this yourself? Trying to figure out if they make capture devices for the old consoles. Any insight you could provide on this would be greatly appreciated.
It's a mixture. A lot of our gameplay is recorded, but we love using old game trailers to provide that nostalgic feeling. For certain instances in games where I want to directly point something out that I did not capture, we will use a clip available on CZcams.
As for tools, I use an HDMI adapter for my GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and N64 to allow my El Gato to record those games in HD. PlayStation 3 needs a specific splitter to disable HDCP otherwise you couldn't record any gameplay off that. 360 works as is. So yeah, just an El Gato, your respective HDMI adapters, and a PS3 splitter :)
@@retrorebound8887 Awesome, I’ll look into it! Thank you for clarifying.
My favorite star wars game is still 2005's battlefront 2
The Clone Wars was an interesting one as was before both 2003 and 2008 series and I loved that at the time.
No phantom menace, no star wars pod racer. My childhood, it cries
The ds Revenge of the Sith game brings back so much memories. I play it at my grandmother's apartment then watch a bootleg copy of ROTS every friday.
I’m pretty sure there was a book called “Imperial Commando” which is a sequel to Republic Commando. The game Republic Commando is absolutely awesome and one of my favorites along with Episode III. Great video man.
There's several books about the commandos, i believe there 6 or 7 novels filling in the gaps between missions in the game and into the imperial era.
@@watdaduckfuk I was only aware of the one, I have some reading to do then.
I'm obsessed with the racer and tis sequel
I remember playing revenge of the sith on the PS2 as a kid it was so much fun!
21:20 I LOVE that game. I really, really love that game and played it ALOT
Battle for Naboo on N64 deserved at least an honorable mention.
I had a PS2 all through the prequel era, and annoyed the hell out of me especially with the Republic commando that they were Xbox only
still have my PS2 tucked away and would love those games on PS2 to play whilst ObiWan is screening. (curse you marketing, and your exclusives)
Nice video bro thanks!!!
Man, there are a few games that I think were very influential on the prequel games:
1. Star Wars Racer: Now this was podracing! My favorite game game they came out with in the prequel era.
2. Rogue Squadron (1998): While this isn't a prequel game, it did come out a year prior to get people excited about "The Phantom Menance". It's gameplay was amazing at the time, similar to Aerofighters Assault... man THAT game was rad.
3. Shadows of the Empire (1997): I hated this game and never played it. I would go over to my friend's house and he would just be running on the cliffs. I read the book. It kinda gave us a peak at what the fan fiction was suggesting, but the Mouse has just bastardized everything.
Great video!
Love the videos bro 🤘🏻
I have that DvD From Cartoon Network still. I love that and for some reason i always check those out then pop in Rogue Leader on Gamecube. In my opinion THE best Star Wars Starship Combat experience..It was one of those Golden timeless 2001 game classics. Rogue Leader, Twisted Metal:Black, Halo, Max Payne, Grand Theft Auto III and Metal Gear Solid 2... Man i miss those days of gaming. It wouldve been cool if they had made a game based on That Clone Wars CN series too..
Hate to be THAT guy but both Clone Wars shows we’re on CN.
As a kid i used to play a game called Jedi power battles for ps1. Its a coop game and it was a blast.
Holy shit, the Double pack Clone Wars. I remember waiting in line with my mom to get it for my dad. That was the game that came with it, it’s one of the first games I remember playing. That and SSX Tricky(If you know, you know)Absolutely awesome memories man
The Republic Commando books are soooo gooooood.
