If I’m not mistaken I believe Palpatine didn’t care if Maul lived. Just so as long as Qui-Gon Jin was not going to live to train Anakin, the true father figure Anakin needed not turn evil and eventually be a Jedi Knight to bring balance to the force / kill the Sith Lord

The point of having young Anakin is to show NO dark side.
Lucas wanted the audience to see that Anakin wasn't always a tyrant, he's a hopeful child, that just wants to explore the galaxy.
As for peicing stuff together, I like that the film doesn't actually tell or show you literally every detail. I think it's good to have your audience think about the plot and peice things together sometimes.
Like Palpatines plan, I don't think he ever wanted to "take over" Naboo, he knew how the Republic would act, and always wanted to be Chancellor with a sympathy vote because it's his home world being invaded.

The one thing I gathered from watching it today: does palpatine actually care that the treaty is signed? Or does he just view that as something he needs to do for the trade federation to keep them on his side? If you look at it from the perspective of palpatines whole goal of the movie is to become chancellor (not talking over Naboo) his motives make more sense

One cool thing about Jar-Jar is that he is the one CGI character you see constantly through out the film. He is an amphibious race, so when you first see him in the swamp, his skin is slick and shinny. Later when they are in the desserts of Tatooine, the texture of his skin dries up so much so that you can actually make out the groves of his skin (which also reminds me of the looks of the dinosaurs from the movie...well...Dinosaur from Disney)
Jar-jar was also meant to have a larger role through the prequels much like how fans would have wanted to see for Darth Maul. But due to fan backlash, they showed less of him.
Something that would again happen with Rey between episodes 8 and 9 where they said she came from a family of nobodies who happily gave her up; to she is actually a spawn of Palpatine.
People often say that the original and prequel trilogy at least had things planned out, but even the original trilogy did not start of with planning to have Luke (and Leia) and Vader be related, or Jabba the Hutt was going to be human.
I like all of the three trilogies just fine, glaring flaws and all.
Star Wars is so big that it has games, books, and other forms of story telling that you can enjoy if you don't like a few things about them.

Then you say the originals insinuate the emperor (which I dont see), so which is it if we're going purely off the movies? Regardless it seems silly to not take the creator's word for value when he controlled what's true or not. Also the writer of the comic mentioned was trying to respect Lucas's vision. So idk believe what you want but it's wrong in accordance to what matters to most people.

4:26 who didn’t already know that Palpatine was the Emperor? How is it foreshadowing when it’s the same actor who played said Emperor in the most recent movie?
That wasn’t foreshadowing; it was lampshading. His motives in the movie aren’t poorly explained, they are entirely implied by the known outcome.
Like, if you start off knowing that Anakin is Vader, there’s no need for the movie to *explain* this kid. You just need to *meet* him and see others react to him.
(I would like to observe that the Council’s reactions to Ani aren’t just about - maybe not even primarily about - presaging his turn to the Dark Side. It’s more about revealing how fearful and complacent the Jedi have become. Everything in the category of “Things Qui-Gon gets that the Council doesn’t,” like Anakin’s potential and the need to guide him empathetically, as well as the return of the Sith, is an explanation of why the Jedi fell. Not because Anakin Skywalker was ‘dangerous’ - because the Jedi could not see their own flaws.)
Same with Palpatine. If you delve too deeply into his motivations or the hidden objectives of his plan, it’s almost reinventing the wheel. Wouldn’t that be a bad use of film time as well?
Agreed re: Jar-Jar. Comic relief is for breaking tension, not pulling focus.

I’ll never understand the distaste or backlash for this movie. I frequently hear that it was trashed and hated upon release but it wasn’t. The reviews were honestly mostly positive, if not at least largely mixed; even Roger Ebert thoroughly enjoyed it! If you watch the out of theater reactions the vast majority are positive or mixed; with only a very few extreme negative responses. (It’s these few that were repeatedly used by CZcamsrs like RLM and Stuckmann for years to discredit the movies - ex - “George Lucas owes me a public apology” ) The large portion of people I’ve spoken to or have seen reviews of either love it or don’t mind it. Similarly, if you watch reviews of the original trilogy, there were many who had the same negative perspectives. “It’s all special effects! No real acting or story! Dry and terrible dialogue.” The negative responses were just highlighted far more often for Phantom Menace due to social media and the internet. At least the prequels, whether you like them or not, did not hamper or disrespect the original trilogy or characters that came before. Lucas absolutely did his best to maintain a cohesive story throughout the six films.
Also, the point of the first episode is perfectly clear to me. It’s entirely to focus on the dual of the fates and Anakin’s start to his journey. Qui-Gon is a wise and intelligent Jedi who, as we see, isn’t on the council due to his differing perspectives on the force and training. He’s even willing to completely disobey the order to take on Anakin as his apprentice. It’s also clear from the get go that Obi-Wan sides with the order and not his own master; disliking Anakin immediately. “Why do I sense we have picked up another pathetic life form.” “The boy is dangerous they all sense it why can’t you?” It’s called the phantom menace and the final battle is the dual of the fates due to the fact that palpatine is slowly gaining power in the senate to eventually take over; while if Qui-Gon dies, Anakin will absolutely fulfill his destiny of turning to the dark side. Had Qui-Gon survived, Anakin would’ve been allowed to use his emotions and attempt to save the people he loved like his mother and padme. It is Obi-Wan’s/the Jedi’s distaste/distrust for anakin, Palpatine’s now fatherly role for anakin in light of Qui-Gon passing, and the lack of the Jedi’s sympathy and acceptance of emotions like love that causes Anakin to fall to the dark side. I thought everything with Palpatine was brilliant it’s just not all up front with the dialogue sometimes; a display of George’s solid use of subtlety. Not to mention how amazing the underwater gungan city is, how awesome Naboo is, the entire Pod Racing sequence, and getting to see the Jedi order/Coruscant in their prime. I can accept if people don’t enjoy them but they’re genuinely compelling films and stories in my opinion.

Appreciate any positive reviews for this movie. My favorite Star Wars story ever made is Knights of the Old Republic 2 because the writing is some of the greatest of all time, outclassing even the original trilogy. But for the movies, it's a weird situation for me. This is definitely one of the weakest movies of the original saga, but I want to say this is my favorite star wars movie just because of nostalgia. I don't think there's ever been a movie I'm more nostalgic for than this one. It's the first movie I ever saw as a toddler. Of course I was obsessed with the toys and I watched the movie all the time. As a kid I really wanted to be Obi-wan, and I still think padawan Obi-wan looks really cool in this movie. And Qui Gon is underrated too. I base my longtime DnD character off of him, a paladin with similar personality and voice.
I think you're also right about the coms with Palpatine btw. A lot of the dialog in this movie is just hard to understand and subtitles help. I remember as a kid not really understanding what was happening in the movie, and then discovering subtitles when I was like 12 and suddenly understanding the movie completely differently. haha

Dave Filoni said duel of the fates score is called Duel of the Fates because it has to do with the fate of Anakin. He also said it’s the most important fight in Star Wars. If Qui Gon lives, Anakin wouldn’t become Vader and if Qui Gon dies Anakin will become Vader. So the entire movie is based around discovering Anakin and the fate of the young boy. I also feel like every character in Phantom Menace adds to the overall story and to the story of Anakin. None of the characters are random characters or filler characters. Each one contributes to the story in some capacity. Like Jar Jar ends up becoming a speaker in the senate and takes Padmes place in the senate. So it circles back to every character regardless of how much screen time is contributing to the story of Anakin in some way. Even if it doesn’t seem like it. But that goes with all the movies except the Disney sequels.

You "tried"? Me and my two sons actually succeeded two days ago. It wasn't that hard. We just pressed play and watched. Cringe withstanding, it went pretty well. Our intent is to watch Episode 3 by May the 4th, to see the eventual fall of Anakin Skywalker.

I think ROTS could have been really great if the script was good and compelling, because the overarching story is good on paper. With all the cringe lines and other iffy things, I think it's mid or pretty decent at best.

I adore Star Wars, it’s my favorite IP. But part of growing up is realizing how these prequels are hot garbage. Not aesthetically, but substantially.
