Josh Glover of Mr. Fence of Florida gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what they did to take their company from 0 to $3 million in their first year of business. In this episode he chats about how they started and what they did to scale.
If you’re in a position to buy a company, you’re not starting from zero.
If you really want to know what starting from zero is, come and talk to someone who has hit rock bottom and started a small construction business as a result of being laid off during a pandemic.
I have special insight into this company and I assure you they started with nothing more than an idea a couple trucks and maybe some hand tools. That being said I have much respect for anyone bootstrapping a construction business. Its not easy. Keep up the good work and know your numbers!
A couple of trucks is a good starting point
@@SuccessfulContractor "started with nothing" must mean something else to you. What Joe Wilson said is if you have either the cash or the credit to purchase a functioning company, you're not starting from zero. It's like if a billionaire decided to start a construction company without any experience in construction, but had the funds to hire consultants, staff, & advertising to get it started. That's not starting from zero.
Ask the right questions next time! Why did he start a fence business in Panama City? It’s because they had a category 5 hurricane that destroyed everything. No shortage of work there and insurance companies pay for all of it. All trades did well and still are.
Yes but now all that work is dried up and he is still thriving. That takes work.
Doing it right now , thanks guys for the insight and support , it's a great help and encouragement.
I’m glad you get value from the show
Awesome video! I am currently in the process of getting my contractor license for fencing, inspirational and informative !
Thanks!
This is amazing!!!
I’m not on the fence industry, but I’m sure going to use these bits of wisdom in my excavation work
Contracting is so universal.
Good video great content I would invest in lapel mics just to cut out the background noise and peaks keep up the great content I learned a lot
This was one of our first. You will see we now use them. 👍
Thanks for the good vid. Plant a mic on your guys so we can hear him better!
This was a one of our first videos. Things are getting much better now 😁
No one speaks about the software they use for biding, CRM, PM (Daily Progress), integrations..etc
We have several videos on our channel about the software we use.
I am a very successful landscape contractor in The Villages Florida the numbers that are on the post seem to be very exploded.
I can only report what they tell me.
I used to work for a fence company I’m going out on my own now about to take my test for licensing what do you think should be Some stuff I should be focusing on in the beginning of this process
Focus on building a good quality team. This won’t be cheap and because of that you need to focus on making a profit on every job. Trying to be the cheapest will be a race to the bottom. Keep your profits up and your prices up so you have capital to pay your team well and grow your business. Know what you need to charge to make a profit. If you can’t calculate this on your own work with a good accountant.
Keep watching the channel. Every week there is more information that will help you as you grow your business.
Work your ass off.try get at least one job a day but try to keep it at 2.but don’t overwork your men realise that they get tired and especially if your out running around looking at jobs and laying out yards ahead of your guys
How can you scale estimating that way without coming up with a pearl in your foot price? Is it just establishing processes and procedures for the sales staff? So that they know what to add to a job? Or does ownership have to be involved on determining the numbers for every job?
It can be a mix. I’m getting ready to show you how we do it in our new startup series. I refuse to price by the foot FYI.
Thank you so much! Please excuse the silly typos above I should’ve proofread it :-)
Sweet Ive done the section price right..
That will give you a leg up for sure. Thanks for watching!
Would like to see some content on a companies in a small market
Do you have any suggestions? We are all ears. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the free game
You're welcome
Driver doesn’t have his seat belt on.
I personally lack the authority to issue any citations for this violation. Instead, I choose to worry about myself, and as you can see, my seatbelt is securely fastened.
This is obvious, but the audio is a little tough to listen to in the beginning of the video.
Agreed. This was one of our very first videos--won't make this mistake again. 👍🏻
A 180 foot job and there done.me and 2 other guys and Bossman so 4 people did 360 foot chain link fucking hills and hookups out the as and the back like on utility and then a 260 footer pretty flat
Solid work!
A smart guy should wear a seat belt. Just saying.
I can’t disagree with that
Misleading.. You didnt really start from 0..
They had a couple old trucks and some hand tools but no cash or customers. Thats about as close to zero as you can get.
Too bad this video has such poor audio. Doing a video in a noisy truck is not the best. Also everyone should have clip-on wireless mics. just saying.
It was one of our fist. We have come a long way since that.
Watched this a few days back, it kept bothering me so im back for my two cents.
..... "We dont charge per foot we charger per section" "dont know how those guys can be profitable charging per foot".....
Bro...if you charge per section youre charging PER FOOT.
You dont do jobs smaller than lets say 200 linear feet (just guessing)....its only because your company overhead is insane.
Id also be willing to bet that you have the same company motto as the ones near me, you subcontract all of your work to an army of Mexicans....you dont pay them shit, all the while running your hole about the volume of work you provide them....lmao. 3 million in annual sales, 1m in material, 350k paid out to subs, 750k in overhead. Whats profit 750k..... dont think so though.
I assure you they don’t have a single sub or subcontract crew. All their jobs are done in house with team members they employ. Is their company perfect? No, but show me one that is. This is about sharing ideas that you may be able to use in your business. Take the ones you like and disregard the rest. Thanks for watching. 🤙
We just released our latest video discussing this very thing. You and I are very much on the same page.
The video was good but the audio was terrible.
One of our first videos. We've come a long way since. 👍🏻
@@SuccessfulContractor yeah you have. I really enjoy the content that you and your brother put out. Thanks for all you give us.
