Thank you. I try to make the videos for people like me, because frankly, I don’t know what all the parts are and have trouble keeping them all straight. You have to basically perform a preliminary layout, and then plan your most efficient route to connect the dots while isolating zones where appropriate. It is easy, but it takes time.
I'm just about to put in a drip irrigation system, so once again, a great and timely video!!
This seems like a lot of work and material. I used my zone 9 of sprinkler system that is run to each raised bed underground. Then I threaded a 1/2” ball valve on a riser where I can either shut off the bed or adjust the flow at each bed separately. Works much better and I can connect either the sprinkler nozzles or drip irrigation tubing to each plant. Also the same system can be connected to my rain barrels with an added 12v water pump. Been working well.

I like putting the emitters on the mainline before the spaghetti in case animals chew the spaghetti line, the flow will still be regulated for the entire system. If you lose an emitter off the end it will affect the flow for the entire zone because of the drop in pressure at that failure point. It’s easier to inspect if they are all on the mainline as well.

More to the point everything I do is container gardening. 5 to 10 gallons. tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupe ,cucumber you name it. So drip irrigation is important to me as a time saver water saver. At least 60 containers .
I've never understood drip irrigation but this cleared so much up for me thank you so much for your diligence and explanation. Other channels talk to you like you're a five-year-old child won't name them they do have good information. But I just like your straightforward approach
I also recommend drip irrigation! I like that unlike a sprinkler irrigation, the plant leaves do not get wet which decreases the risk of fungal disease. I decided to experiment with a different drip hose this year that can be stored flat in the garage over the winter as the drip hose I have been using was at the end of its life. I only have 3 containers, to contain my invasive plants because I want more from my gardens than mint, catnip, and oregano. 😆 I may have to consider this system for them so they don't die while I'm on vacation.

I just came in for a break from the heat as I was working on installing my drip irrigation system into my raised beds this afternoon and low and behold, CZcams just recommended this video to me! I'm using the Perma-Lock fittings as well and they are a dream to work with. I've just flushed out the main tubing and am all set to join the micro-tubing and emitters after I gather up the courage to face the heat and humidity again. Great video!

I've been using the same Drip Depot parts for a couple years. I love them. I control everything with the Orbit B-Hyve Hose timers that are controlled from an app on my iPhone.

Thank you! This is the most instructional drip system video that I've seen! I have a very small garden that I want to set up on a drip system but had no idea on how to go about it. Not many instructions with the system I purchased so I found it confusing. Add to the fact that I am a visual learner. I lost some plants last year due to being out of town for a family emergency. I promised myself that would not happen this year if I had to go out of town.
I'm glad the video was helpful. Definitely set up the drip irrigation system. I put installing mine off for awhile, because it got too hot last summer and I lost the energy to do it. Now that it's done, I'm *so thankful,* because it has made life so much easier. I just left for a vacation, and my neighbor came over a couple times and just turned on my spigot for 15 mins. Everything did great. It's a lifesaver.

I know you did this a while ago but it’s perfect timing for me. I have my wicking tubs plumbed together so they have water reservoirs under them to keep them watered, but someone bought me some grow bags and I’m not going to put water reservoirs in them so I wanted to see how this was done. I have no power out to where my garden is but I have a sprinkler system that I need to get running from when I bought the house and I have water barrels out there that I can hook up to provide water on a regular basis if I decide. I haven’t seen all of your videos but I’m sure you have to have an automated setup somewhere for your drip system. That will be the final part of my puzzle to engineer.

To make your life even easier, you can replace the manual valves with 12v sprinkler system valves, do a master valve at the hose, then each row another. Some sprinkler controllers have the ability to add a master and secondary, then you can just control the whole thing from your mobile phone and scheduled watering.
It is very easy to move back and forth to PVC to hook these up (drip depot has all those compression coupling adaptors - mini rings that you glue to the PVC). At my setup, I even hooked up a mist line to one of the valves and no I can tell Alexa to turn on the mist to cool the backyard area ;)

drip irrigation was the best thing I ever did for my garden. with this 95+ temps this week. definitely helped with a pressure regulator to not pop off pressure fittings.
It is a bit of work up front, but it will save you enormous time in the long run. It has taken me 2 summers to install all of this, but now my garden is basically on autopilot permanently. Next will be zones to my perimeter fruit trees, but that is much less complicated.
@@TheMillennialGardener yep. I set mine on a timer so I can water before the sun comes up. I got all of my beds and half of my containers. Need to do a few more containers before I’m 100% automated.

@@yaima0901 my figs I water by hand. They are my only fruit trees. But I have my system run for about 30-45 minutes in the morning before the sun comes up. So far so good. We’re going to be going back down in temps so I will probably drop it back down.

This is timely since I just ran a main line over to my containers but haven’t chosen an emitter yet. Question for you- for plants that have a lot of subsurface feeder roots like citrus do you think a downward spray would be better than a point source dripper?
BTW I love drip depot and use the locking fittings from your recommendation 1-2 years ago, it really is the best way to do things. Will be sure to use your storefront link for my next purchase.
Thanks for the excellent video. Clear instructions, easy to follow. Question: It's a lot of work to plan, cut and tie the system in place - can it be left in place over a Northeast winter without damage, so long as the lines are not full of water? How would you properly empty all the lines? Also do you have a link to a 20-25 PSI valve to attach to your hose faucet?

I love your irrigation set up. I’ve been struggling with irrigation in my garden. It works for the first few days but then by day 3 some of the droppers stop dropping while a few will still work. If only this video came out a month ago before I ran my system. When I need to replace the tubing in a year or 2, I'll probably upgrade to 1/2 or 3/8 in.

Great video. I have tons of drip to set up. Definitely some good ideas here and a clean finish. I assume there is a pressure regulator on the system? My main question has been does it matter how close the punctured holes are? I thought I remembered there being a minimum spacing between the 1/4" holes(18"?), but I can't find anything on drip depot's site. All I found was the maximum feet/gph for tubing sizes(30/30 for 1/4", 200/200 for 1/2", and 480/480 for 3/4").

It will probably be easier to break the install into portions instead of tackling it all at once so it's less daunting. Yes, there is a difference in the spacing of the holes, because you want the holes spaced based on what you're planting. The drip line comes with, I believe, either 6", 12" or 18" drip spacing, so you'll want to use the lines that match your planting scheme. Something like lettuce or carrots will need tight spacing, where indeterminate tomatoes need wide spacing. Drip line is pretty cheap and eventually tends to clog, so the drip line itself isn't permanent and only lasts a few seasons. The distribution lines last many years.
Question - I get that you do not have a set schedule of when you use the drip system or for how long you let it run due to so many factors to consider. BUT......., on a typical summer day with no rain in the forecast & with temps in the 80's-90's & full sun, HOW LONG of time would you run the 0.5 gpm emitters for and WHAT time of day would you run them for? I am in South Jersey (Glassboro, Gloucester County) which you are familiar with.
Hi, I experienced drippers only send narrow channel of water through containers and inadequate to water entire root ball. So I ended up switching to micro sprayer for drip heads. Let us know how it works for you in North Carolina since you get augmented by rain. I don't in Los Angeles

Where do you get your landscape fabric? I’ve been looking for some sturdy enough for foot traffic to put under our pots.
Do you manually turn on and off your zones as you water through the different areas? Do you use a timer on the line, or just turn water on and watch until things are soaked properly? When you use 1 gph emitters (for example) do you actually run your water for an hour in that zone?
Did you use a timer? Did you use a splitter valve and a regulator for your supply line?
You’re not concerned with your large fig trees so close together regarding sun exposure and air flow? Second question, do you prune your fig trees throughout the season? To remove branches that aren’t growing where you want.

I’ve been using the drip irrigation system for a couple of years now. For the most part it works great but I found that some of the barbs become loose in the holes of the main line. Hi--QUESTION: I have a small garden and what to set up a drip system--can I use the 1/4" line as the main line or does it have to be the 1/2" line--I am going to use gravity fed as the garden is not near any water, and I am renting so I can not bury any lines!!
I have my 200ft garden hose stretched out across my lawn to my GH. When I go to water in the afternoon WOW that water is hot!!!
You could make a cup of tea with it it is so hot. I let it run 2min before the heat begins to subside. I hate wasting so much of my well water like that.

Do you have a filter and pressure regulator at your head end? Everything I see indicates that it's important to filtered out particulate matter, and also important not to over pressurize things.

You said to make sure you stick to one drip manufacturer but looking at Drip Depot they sell from a variety of manufacturers? With all the shut-off valves you installed it seems like a onerous task task to remember which ones are open and which are closed. How would you incorporate a timer to your system?

Thank you! I water about 15 mins. Any longer and water will run out of the pots, which isn’t good. I don’t want to wash them out.
Follow up question: how often do you water them? Like 2 or 3x per week??

15 mins is more than enough at a time. More than that and water starts running out of the drain holes, which is not good since it flushes out the containers.
How long and how often do you run the container drip emitters
How are you liking the drip emiters for your containers? Do they pop off occasionally or are they secure? I have been debating between emiters vs emiter tubing for my patio garden.

They're excellent. The Drip Depot emitters do not pop off. They're amazing. I tried another brand, and they'd constantly blow off. The unique barb style of the Drip Depot emitters don't allow it. I recommend ordering through them. I placed a link to their stuff in the video description. Their quality is top notch.
Can I be on my dripper for the whole day?? Will it affect my plant ??
Thanks for a great video. I have a lot of containers with flowers besides my raised bed veggie garden. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed because they are in 3 different areas, front of home, both sides and 2 decks. I'm lucky to have 3 spigot to run lines from but have no idea on how to measure and what pressure regulator to use on each spigot. Any advice is much appreciated!
I would recommend looking on DripDepot’s website. They have several sample kits for different orientations, which include pressure regulators and backflow preventers. You can begin with a layout that is similar to yours, then customize it. I use the ‘Senninger 3/4" Hose Thread Pressure Regulator - PSI : 25 PSI.’ However, my system is pretty large, so I used the largest allowable. If your system is small, you may want a lower PSI to prevent blowing the system apart. They can’t tolerate much above 25PSI, and less is obviously safer.
With your drip system setup on the mature fig trees, how many hours per day do you drip into the container figs from late May through summer until they bare edible fruit?
You can measure the output of your particular irrigation system by placing a sheet pan or casserole dish under the drip hose and experiment with different run times and ect to measure out put. I also run mine (from a timer) at night to mitigate immediate evaporation and facilitate deep watering and root development. The timer is also good because your garden doesn't die when you are on vacation.

Is the water 1000 degrees. On a hot sunny day I’d imagine the hot water coming out of those black tubes would be bad for the plants, is that not the case?
I wonder if you get freezing temps later in the year? We freeze hard in the mountains of central Oregon. Would I need to disassemble the lines or can they withstand freezing?
Depending on how large your system is you take a small compressor or canned air and attach it to the main waterer open up all the valves and the ends just blow out all the water, then replace the end caps so bugs and debris doesn't get in.
How frequently do you run your drip system?
This is an excellent video, as usual! Something that haven’t heard anyone explain and am curious if you can address. You said that your emitters were 1/2 gal per hour. 1/2 gal doesn’t seem like a lot of water and it especially seems crazy that I will have to run my water for at least an hour. (I know you showed us the gal emitters, but they still take an hour.) Is there something that delivers water quicker than 1 hour or would that flow be too damaging to the plant? Love you and Dale! In the video description, I have a link to my Drip Depot affiliate store. They sell 0.5GPH, 1.0GPH, 2.0GPH...I think even 4.0GPH emitters. You can get them in all different sizes. However, please keep the following in mind:
1. Drip irrigation systems need to have a restriction valve on them that limits flow to 15GPH. Otherwise, the pressure is too great and it can burst your entire system. Therefore, the entire system can only support 15 gallons per hour of flow. So, if you want to use 1 gallon per hour emitters and you have more than 15 plants to water, the flow is going to be naturally restricted. If you have 30 plants and you're watering them to 1.0 gallon per hour drip emitters, they're only going to function at 0.5GPH, so you'll still need to run the system for a long time. Using larger emitters won't help, because they'll be reduced in-kind. The only way around this is to have multiple points where you feed the system and break the system into many parts, which isn't exactly convenient.
2. The point of drip irrigation is to slowly penetrate deeply into the soil. If you water the system with a high GPH rate, it's going to behave more like overhead watering, and the soil may repel the water. Using slower dripping emitters and running them for a longer period of time actually penetrates the soil better and waters it more deeply. Since the system is automated, it doesn't really harm you to run it longer. Just set a timer on your oven so you don't forget to turn it off, or buy a timer that turns it on and off manually for you.

I am turning them on and off manually. The reason why is my spigot will leak with a timer attached. One day, I would love to integrate this into my lawn irrigation system. Until that day comes, I’m stuck manually turning the spigot on.
@@TheMillennialGardener timers will change your life! I have a small garden compared to yours but ran line from the spigot on the house underground to each bed and put a spigot at each bed. Pressure gauge is on the spigot at the house and individual timers are on each bed. Took a bit of setting up, but now I’m free from all that on and off! Love your channel. Thanks!

How long can you keep your fig plant in the five gallon bucket before you need to set them out in the ground and will they make any fruit while they are in buckets?
They can survive in there indefinitely if you prune them aggressively in the fall/winter and root prune every 2-3 years or so. Most of them are on their 3rd year and are doing fine in the 5 gallon buckets. My figs usually fruit first season.
How long(ft) and how many .5 gph emitters can you use with your 1/2 inch pipe using gravity feed tanks? How much higher are your gravity tanks compared to your garden? Thanks
@The Millennial Gardener I too would like to know the how high your rain barrels are above your garden. Does gravity feed allow you to water more than one zone at a time? I see in a later video you did raise your barrels. What is total height above garden?
I have a few questions. Would you suggest buying individual parts or a beginner kit for approx. 30 5 GAL containers? Is the drip emitter rate 0.5 gal per hour PER PLANT or overall? I would also like to know what landscape fabric you use/recommend to help my newbie container garden. This vid was helpful, informative and concise. I need to start an order list. What is the max number of emitters that can be attached to the main line? I want to set up a drip irrigation line for my front yard, about 30 plants, and a separate zone line for the back yard, about 40 plants. Is a 1/2" main line big enough for that many emitters?
That depends on many factors. It depends on the psi of the pressure regulator that you must install in the beginning of the system, the GPH rating of each dripper, the overall surface area of the system, the grade of your system, and so much more! Each “zone” in my system probably waters 100+ plants. I can irrigate every single zone with my spigot, which is literally hundreds of individual plants.
Is there any video where you show the setup at the hose faucet with a 20-25 PSI valve, and the zone lines splitting off from your main line? I didn't see this in the video (please forgive me if I missed it).

Also what about connecting a timer for your system, so you can water even when you're not home? Which timer would you use with the drip system you feature?
i would think black tubing is not what you want for drip. maybe i'm wrong - and i do see most companies using black piping but could this not potentially result in watering your garden with hot water?
Hi. Can I use water from my water tank 1000L standing about 1 meter high? So lots of water but not much pressure.
It depends how far away your drippers are and what their elevations are. You'd have to check the different elevations and make sure your tank is significantly higher.
So does the distribution line just connect to the house faucet?
It is connected by both a rain barrel and to the house. You cannot simply connect it to a house line. You need a backflow preventer and a pressure regulator, or you'll blow the system apart. I have a full install guide here: czcams.com/video/szMxYIKDXmU/video.html
