- / loisdavidsonart This painting is inspired by the late, great Ron Ranson. It depicts a bend in the river and winter trees. It is also a 'viewer request video' as a few people asked me to show how I paint reflections.

It is painted using Cotman tube watercolour paints: raw sienna, paynes grey, ultramarine, burnt umber and light red using hake and rigger brushes :-) I used Millford 140lb cold pressed paper 15" x 11" - Jak na to + styl
I agree with Robert Boyce here! Ranson would be proud. in fact I did have moments I thought Ron was painting! O gosh I need to pick up the hake once again! very inspirational Lois! good one!
Edo Hannema Watercolour Art Edo you have made my day! The hake is indeed a wonderful brush, but I long for a very large squirrel mop, one day I will be able to afford one 🤔😉🤞💐
What size large squirrel brush and why would you recommend it over the hake brush?
@@tammyste1 a nr6 Blue squirrel
You did the reflections so easily. Thanks for sharing. I am going to watch it again.
I'm 67yrs old. Never picked a paintbrush up in my life, but have just started to try and learn. WOW, you make it seem so simple. Thanks for your videos Lois. they're fabulous. I think i'm going to need a lot more practise.
Bill.
I think Mr Ranson himself, would have been proud of that tutorial, Miss Davidson, Thank you so much for your time.
robert boyce Thanks so much, your encouragement is greatly appreciated 😊💐
Another inspiration, another reminder of the importance of a limited palette, bold strong colours because they fade, and a light touch. Sigh! One day I'll learn. Thanks once again Lois. You're SO talented.
I like that you say damp water! It tells me that it is not tons of water!! Beautiful scene! Thank you!!💕
Excellent results using the hake - I will keep on trying this challenging style of painting with the hake.
When you said you were going use Payne's grey for the water my ears perked up. Didn't know that could work for water. Its beautiful! Also love watching how you worked to bring the river to recede and follow the horizon.
How i love your art videos. I am learning so much being away from doing any for awhile. One of the things you have no loud bumping background music when you are speaking which helps me clearly as i have 2 hearing aids .You speak clearly your teachings and paintings are very beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. Pauline
I have to say that I've never been a fan of this style of watercolour, but I'm very quickly changing my mind watching your tutorials Lois. I especially like the relections in this - so simple but the effect is wonderful. I also like the river in the foreground which you lightened up. Really lovely work
clive Howlett Thanks so much Clive, I really appreciate your encouragement and wonderful comment 😊💐☕️☕️
Absolutely brilliant tutorials , keep up the good work , thanks very much you are an inspiration !
I love this so much! How did I miss this! Thank you!
Thank you so much for these tutorials! Love your paintings! Brave!
Beautiful. I would love to see a wider angle so that I can also see how you get the paint from the palette with your brushes and also the water.
Lovely tribute to the great Ron! ❤
Truly beautiful.
Stunning- you’re very talented
It's beautiful...your style if teaching is wonderful.
This is lovely ...so simple yet impressive....thanks for sharing.
Great video Lois 👍
It's a beautiful winter scene.

I really enjoyed the painting so the way you do it!!! Thanks for sharing your work 🍂🌼
Nicely Done!! Looks just like Ron Ranson did it!
Watching you creating such a wonderful landscape in a piece of paper is hypnotic!!! Love it!
So simple, yet so beautiful and so impressive. ❤️

Thanks so much Steven, I'm thrilled that you like my work :-)
An inspirational tutorial, as usual👌👌👌
Amazing!
Awesome!
Very nice
I loved his style and your style too. Very loose and impressionistic. Great winterlike painting . I'm already thinking of Winter (that we never get here in Florida)
Another wonderful tutorial culminating in a beautiful painting. You are a real talent.
Thanks so much, that means so much to me x :-)
Superb ❤
Lovely, you make it look so simple.
Artsos Creations thanks, it take a bit of practice but Ron Ranson’s methods are a lot more simple than some approaches 😊
I have been watercolor painting for just about 2 years - new to the whole painting thing. I saw some of your tutorials and decided to add some hake brushes to my stash. Good thing this was a beginners painting. A whole learning curve on using hake brushes and figuring out how much paint to water etc. I think i figured out how you did the trees with the brown stripe amongst the gray. Fun to try it all out. My version is adequate but I learned a lot. thank you.
Very nice Lois, thank you.
I love this one, Lois
Keith Evans Thanks so much 😊💐
Very sick nice color, that’s the winter.
Thank you, Lois. Very helpful. 🎨🖌👍
Thanks Lynn, I'm so glad it was helpful :-)
Beautiful painting. Great video. it's beautiful. 😊🎨✨✨✨
Thanks so much :-)
Beautiful ❤️
Thanks Margret, I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊💐
What a fantastic painting, thanks for sharing. I love the Ron Ranson style so this is a perfect demonstration for me. I only wish he'd done more coastal scenes.
As a quick follow up to my comment above, I got chance to try this painting yesterday and was really really pleased with the result. My best effort so far, exactly the style I was hoping to capture. Thanks so much!
I loved when you said it was "time to get in the river" 😂
A great tutorial, thank you.
Thank you June :-) I'm glad you enjoyed it
Great video, you have such a light touch.
Joe Menza Thanks, it’s following Ron’s advice 💐🖼🎨
@@LoisDavidsonArt Yes it's very Ron, he had a light touch as well.
That was excellent. I thought, at the end, that it looked more like a pond than a river. Either way, it was very good, and very inspiring. Thank you.
you did it excellently
thanks so much Pavel, it was fun!
Very lovely painting, Lois! I've noticed in your paintings some very faint pencil lines. It would be helpful, in future paintings, if you could make your pencils lines darker so that we could use them as a guide while you're painting. Yes, Ron Ranson would be proud!
This is nice. Better than Ranson. Seriously. I am 83. Can't master the Hake, so gave up and stick to trad brushes. Merry Christmas Lois
Oh my! Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I absolutely love your work, and am inspired to give a hake brush a go. Would you please let me know what brand and size hake brush you used in this beautiful painting?
Looks like it was done by Mr Ranson himself!
Great and selective.

Hi! I just started to paint watercolors and I love to watch your tutorials! You have a lovely voice that I enjoy listening to! I am from sweden so English is my second language and therfor I sometimes dont understand or "hear" some of the words. It is the name of a brush I cant hear. I think you say something like wriggely brush or something😂🙈. The thin brush. Hope you see this even if its been a year or so since you posted this! Thank you for a great tutorial! My namne is Anna, by the way.
Hi Anna, I think the thin brush is a “rigger” brush. I believe these brushes were so called because they were perfect for painting the rigging ( or ropes, sails and fine lines )on old ship scenes. Hope that helps!
awesome - you're handy
I will join your patreon account beginning October 1st. In the meantime, I want to get my materials ready. I purchased a small size Ron Ranson hake, should I buy a medium as well? I don’t foresee panting anything bigger than 10x16” till I have a clear understanding of how it all works in practice. I also own a 9X12” block which probably I will use to get started. I have smaller brushes but none of them are authentic kolinsky sable brushes, but imitations from an American company, Princeton. I do have some credit cards or hotel keys that I can use to create textures. Wonderful picture you have painted without fiddling at all. Thanks
Thanks Mr s, it will be great to see you in Patreon. I think probably see how you get on with the small hake first, they take a bit of getting used to
Lois, love this demonstration! What kind of Hake brush are you using? Thank you so much!
