    // 5 TOP TIPS for PARENTS from SPEECH THERAPISTS!:
    #1) Don't overthink your child's initial evaluation results!
    Why? It's just a starting point, and often times kids score LOWER on initial assessments due to non-compliance and non-preferred tasks!
    Soooo, take it with a grain of salt, don't overthink it and keep your chin up!! The most important part is that your child is beginning to get therapy and support!
    #2) Be SILLY at home! PLAY with your child!

    **Stay tuned for a BIG pre-linguistic resource coming your way!
    #4) Create communication opportunities in your home!
    How?!
    + Don't anticipate your child's needs all of the time - wait for them to initiate communication and ask/sign/use a gesture/sound or word
    + Limit a child's ability to access all of their favorite toys, snacks, juices - by putting it just out of reach or in a see-through bin with a lid
    + Use a first/then approach or MODELED approach for teaching HOW to make a request
    // All Inclusive //Speedy Speech TOUCH Hand Cues:
    • SPEECH SOUND HAND CUES...
    speedyslp.com/resources/hand-...
    #5) Practice, Practice, Practice Skills the skills you are targeting! Don't give up when your child pulls their hand away or doesn't get it the first time! Acquiring a new skills is like running a marathon! It takes lots of good AND bad days, tons of repetition and a lot of support! YOU CAN DO IT! Don't give up!
    Begin at a level that is lower than your child's current ability level to increase your child's motivational level OR begin with a preferred task using first/then method.

    My 2 almost 3 year old has two SLP’s and neither are as educational, positive, fun or enthusiastic as you. As a mom I have learned so much more from watching your videos then all the in person time combined we have spent with his therapists. I so wish you were a SLP in my home town. Please keep these videos coming. And if I could request one, can you make one that gives us some fun ways to work on vowels?

      That’s a great idea! I will remember to target vowels in play! I actually have a video on my phone of working on vowels with a child but I will need to ask parent permission to share. Stay tuned

    Thank you. My 2 year old daughter recently had her first session and I was reluctant to continue because all they did was play for the full 30 mins. I will continue to bring her in for therapy. She will also be starting preschool so that should help also.

    I'm pretty sure my child is just willful and a bit stubborn as he was doing a lot of the pre linguistic skills and now seems like he's forgotten them. He no longer responds to his name every time but will run from another room if he hears music he loves, he doesn't want to point as much but will take our hands to the activities he wants to do or bring us the activities, he doesn't constantly like eye contact he likes to focus on the item is playing with more then eye contact. He likes to help with chores sometimes more then playing but that's play for him I guess. We play a lot but I'm not completely sure it's helping him with language skills. He doesn't say any words at all at 21 months but he babbles and will respond often to questions with babbles he also watching our mouth when saying abcs, counting or singing songs he likes. I'm pretty worried though I try not to be because he's just not saying any words yet. I been watching your videos and trying to apply them but he mostly just wants to play outside and go for walks. I know he is learning things from these activities just doesn't seem like he's learning speech.... any advice would be helpful. When I ask other parents they just say they don't know anything about it their kid just started talking.

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 2 lety

      If I can be completely honest I would definitely take him to see a developmental pediatrician. These are a a lot of markers for autism. I would focus on using what he likes to do like music and engage with him in that and pause the music and see if he will try to fill in the blank with words or sounds. He might also be a gestalt language processor which I do have a video on and that would be the most helpful method to help him at home. 💛 hang in there mama, you’re doing great check out gestalt language processing and the NLA stages on meaningfulspeech.com

    What do you suggest when a 6 yr old ,... being focussed, speaks clearly on /k/ and /g/ sounds, be it final or first sound in the word.. but again when it is a normal routine casual talk... they speak with same issue with missing clarity or eating up the sound or overlapping sounds.

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 2 lety +1

      That’s pretty typical, honestly! 6 year olds (especially boys) don’t care about their speech, so we see that once they are motivated & or focused to correctly produce sounds & make progress at the spontaneous sentence level, but until then….. 🤷🏼‍♀️ lol best of luck!! Your little one will get there one day!!

  • @StephanieMT

    more therapists should explain these things at the evaluation so parents will know before going in (some dont)

    What are your thoughts on a child having multiple SLPs? My child is going 4 times a week with different SLPs each time.

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před 2 lety +1

      I think it’s 100% best to have the same therapist - however I know the company that I work for currently does not seem to value that same opinion so kids are just tossed around wherever, so it depends on the company & also the therapist - I try to be at work every single day but I know a lot of therapists might call out or work different hours or be sick and so sometimes there will be coverage that is unavoidable but I hate to see when kids are tossed around between different therapist using different therapy techniques every session

  • @BeautifulChoas1
    @BeautifulChoas1 Před rokem

    How do you feel about parents switching speech therapists? My child is on his 2nd SLP. The first wasn’t convenient for our schedule. Now the new one seems to lock him in a chair for 30 mins. I’m not sure if I want to stay with her.

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před rokem +1

      I do not ever recommend restricting a child's movement to work on attention or communication. Research shows us that more communication is obtained and greater attention is displayed when gross motor movements are available (child is running, jumping, bouncing, etc) so I would recommend changing as soon as possible if you haven't already.
