Said so rightly. Realising the difference between 'coaching' and 'consulting' has made a huge shift in my online parent coaching programs

I have some concerns about my loving, silly 16month old son. Around 12 months he would repeat us when we said mama, dada, nana and a few other words. Looking back now I noticed in videos when he was around 9 months he would respond to his name constantly, then videos when he was about 12months I would repeatedly say his name and it would take more for him to respond. Fast forward to him now at 16months he can say about 15 words but I don’t feel as if he uses them as much as he should, like he won’t say baba or milk when he wants one. He just tends to whine/fuss so I ask him if he wants one he shakes his head yes. he will repeat some words after I say it first but not all of the time. He doesn’t seem to repeat mama or dada when I prompt him to say it anymore. He will however come up to me while I have food and say bite bite bite, or when he wants up in my lap he comes up and says upup up. Now When it comes to new words I say I’ve noticed he has tried try to mimic them or sometimes says them correctly but then he doesn’t tend to use them again. He also seems to not respond to his name even more so now. He will respond here and there or when he’s not really engaged into an activity, he does seem to have good eye contact most of the time when I finally get his attention But then sometimes when I call his name he will look at me and then look away, especially if I don’t have something to really keep his attention. He brings me toys, shows them to me, shares them while giving eye contact. He loves peekaboo, and playing other games with me sometimes and at times he even plays with his 2year old sister. She does tend to take things away from him and has hit him, which obviously he doesn’t like. So there is a lot of time where he does more of independent play In the same room with us. Sometimes If anyone tries to take something from him he says no and isn’t really happy. He does seem to have quite a bit of tantrums when he doesn’t get his way. When it comes to commands I can ask him to put something in the garbage and he will, at times when I ask him to bring me a certain toy he will and then other times he won’t. Usually when I point to something he tends to look at it, there are times when he’s engaged in an activity he won’t. He tries to communicate when he needs help, like if he wants a pair of sunglasses on and he can’t quite do it himself he comes up to me and say help(it’s not clear but I know what he’s saying). Not very often will he point when he wants something from us, he just kind of puts his hand up in the direction to what he wants and then goes uh uh uhhh and whines until he gets it. Im sorry this is such a long post, I am so worried about him. I am losing sleep over it. I did make an appointment with his pediatrician and one with the early intervention office. While I wait I’m just wondering what you might think though? Could it just be a language delay or autism or another type of delay? Thank you in advance

I would speak with his pediatrician, if you are worried you should ask for a referral for assessment... its different in each state so I would ask his pediatrician first...

Thank you for your explanation of the coaching model and that it does NOT mean that we never do anything with the child or ever touch the child! I get so upset every time I hear this. Or even worse, that little Johnny doesn't even need to be present or awake during the sessions! Noooo! A good idea has been taken too far in some cases. I appreciate your fresh, even, common sense perspective.
