  • A rare cine-film capturing the final week of service on the Middleton Branch Line. What was a well worn station was soon to become a derelict wreck, Wright & Green then Crown paint occupied the site This cine-film was passed down to my father in the mid 70's

I've lived in Middleton all of my life..born in 1962, so don't remember the train station, but have heard about it. Great post of interesting Middleton history, thanks for sharing your video. 👍

Born in June 1964, I can't remember Middleton Station as I was too young, I believe it stayed open for goods trains until some time in 1965, even though passenger trains finished there in 64 sometime. Also Middleton Junction station got closed under the 'Beeching' cuts in 1966 - you can still see where the station steps are there and also the ticket office near the 'mousehole' tunnel bricked up. I knew that the station in Middleton was where Wright and Greens was in the 1970's, but there is not much left to tell you there was a station there - an old brick wall next to the old probabtion service building next door on Oldham Road looks to date from when the station was there?

Such a shame no one had the forsight to try and preserve the line the site and goods yard to the left of St Michael's church would have made it a perfect candidate and brought alot to a dying town

I traveled on the line a few times and also got prosecuted for trespassing on it, taken to court and received a 10 bob fine.

Great little clip. Middleton has become my adopted town and I find the history of our long lost rail station and the short branch line fascinating. Any other info, photos or film would be great.

@@sarahcb1986 do you know where The Brunswick pub is? (Townley St/Oldham Rd) Middleton Railway Station was over the road, to the North-East. Yeah, if Iremember correctly The Brunswick faced The Railway over Oldham Rd, but its been 55 years. Anyway thats why that pub is called The Railway.....coul d be called something else now...if its even still there.

@@dumptrump3788 Yes I know where you mean... I wondered if it was that pub! But knowing how it is now (or when I was last there, 10yrs ago), it's just so hard to imagine!
