- Little House on the Prairie was a TV show based on a series of nine books that were published primarily between 1932 and 1943. The series, known as the Little House series, was written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, who intended it as a historical drama to represent her childhood in the Midwest. She lived in the Midwest between 1870 and 1894, when she was a child.
The United States bought much of the Midwest from France in 1803, in an event known as the Louisiana Purchase. However, much of that land was uncharted by Americans, and it remained unsettled for some time. The practice of homesteading grew popular, and families moved into the great unknown and built homes on the land. Homesteaders focused entirely on self-sufficiency, and they built their own homes, grew their own food, and even made their own clothes.
While the US government romanticized this lifestyle to encourage citizens to settle the Midwest, it was a difficult way of living. Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family settled in Kansas when she was just three years old, and they faced many hardships. However, Laura learned many things growing up, and it inspired her to write a book series later on in her life.
The series became so popular that a man named Ed Friendly was inspired to create a television series based on the books.
Little House on the Prairie aired on September 11th, 1974, and concluded after eight seasons on March 10th, 1982. A slightly different version of the series called Little House: New Beginnings ran the following year. The series was a family-favorite in households across America, and even today, it remains a classic among children and adults alike.
Much of the show's success is owed to the talented cast members. But did you know about some of the relationships that took place behind the scenes? Melissa Sue Anderson had a hard time socializing she kept to her self but one of the reason was that Melissa Sue actually auditioned for the Laura part and her was very mad that she didn't get the lead part so I think her family made her feel like she couldn't be friend I also think that the part Mary was far more challenging to do and Melissa Sue did a great job with that part...

I've been watching Little house on the Prairie for decades and still do, I watch it over and over because I have it on DVR, not only because I Luv the series but because it doesn't matter what religion you are, this show makes sure you look towards your Faith and your community if you have it, because you can have one and not the other, so for me, I have my Faith and that means so much to me....
This was one of my favorite shows growing up. I would never look at it the same after watching this.

Some of the episodes were so memorable especially the one where the runaway Laura meets Jonathan (Ernest Borgnine) on the mountain. The child and adult actors were outstanding in this show.
That's one of my top five favorite Little House episodes. LHOTP will always be one of my favorites. A great family show.

I love this show. In the beginning of 2020 when stay at home orders started due to Covid. I started watching these wonderful shows. Brought back wonderful memories of childhood. I ordered the nine series DVD. I just can’t get enough of it. It’s so wholesome and just takes me to a place of peace and love. Crazy to hear how Laura & Nelly were true friends. 🤪

I bought the whole series on Vudu and am happy that I did. In 5th grade I got the books for Christmas and wore them out!
The DVDS are well worth it especially since they’ve unedited. I won’t watch Little House anymore on broadcast TV because the episodes are so heavily edited for more commercials.

This program never gets boring, I love it. I loved it as a kid , I’d come home from school at 3:45 to be able to watch it before dinner. ( I usually waited for my dad to help me with my homework later in the evening.. )

I think it's a little unfair Melissa Sue Anderson was branded cold and bratty. I've seen her interviewed and she seems like a perfectly nice woman. Coming from a sheltered background she may have just been shy, not everyone is extroverted and finds mixing with different people as easy as others do.

I think Melissa Sue Anderson was every boys dream. As it turned out she's living a decent and tranquil life in Canada. She's been married, her only marriage, for over thirty years, and several children, who by the way did not follow in her career and all professionally doing well. Considering HOLLYWEIRD this is quite a CON'cept. KUDOS to her.....

I wasn’t, From what I understand, Melissa Sue Anderson didn’t get along with hardly anyone. I heard her mother was your typical stage mother.
I knew that Melissa and Jonathan were whole siblings, and adopted, but was surprised to hear that they grew apart. I was surprised that Melissa Sue Anderson was so unfriendly. I still watch the show in Georgia on COZI TV and UPTV. I actually have been watching since the program started, and continue to adore it to this day. A lot of people have no idea that the boys that played Albert Ingalls, played by Michael Laborteaux and Patrick Laborteaux played Jonathan Garvey's son are actually BROTHERS. Etta Plum, who was a teacher is Michael Landon's daughter, Leslie Landon. The episode where a boy played an illiterate teen, Abel Makay, was played by Dirk Blocker (Dan Blocker from Bonanza') son. A lot of children in the classroom were the children of some Michael Landon's friends.

@@skinnybrownbrown565 It was a made for tv movie 1983 called look back at yesterday. When Charles brings Albert back home cause he has nose bleeds and is tired. he is diagnosed with Leukemia. he is told it's fatal. you don't see him die but the story suggests that he does. very sad and good acting.

He actually seems like a decent, down to Earth guy.
I always feel bad for him now since the reports focus and real Melissa's hesitance and fear in playing opposite him but we don't ever hear about how all of this made him feel...
To be honest. I heard some pretty cruel stories about how " mean", " hateful" and " cold", Melissa Gilbert treated him on the set. I heard she was Down right awful to him. My Dad worked in the industry in the 70's. He did not share this information to us kids until the 80's after the show had ended and we were old enough to handle the truth. Little House was a huge favorite in my family growing. So glad Dad waited to tell us, I was so emotionally invested in these characters; I would have been traumatized knowing the truth as a kid.

Knew all of these already. LHOTP is a (guilty) pleasure of mine. And i always liked the later episodes better. Probably just before or when Mary went blind. Yes it was a tragic episode but I found both Mary & Laura grew up a lot more after that. And always loved Laura & MR Edwards friendship they were defiantly soul mates. Willie was such a mama's boy for the fist few seasons but I really began it like him after Nellie left.
I also think Melissa Sue Anderson was unfairly branded as cold & unfriendly.

There are more videos but the ones I really do like & a tear jerker ( bringing back memories) are "Through the Years" w/Kenny Rogers & "Can't Help Falling in Love" w/ Elvis Presley.

I & my 5 kids loved this show. & I am happy to know they got along & a bit surprised Mary was difficult.. Butblike was mentioned could be from.over protective mo she did not know how to act in running with others... So glad to hear they remained friends.. It had such realistic hardships 4 all..Micheal Landon died b4 his time

When the title said "secret relationships" i thought this was going to be about who was dating who among the cast and crew.
I still watch all the series. I loved the show. Couldnt hardly believe Laura and Mary didnt get along outside of set. And the romance between Laura and Manley. You could tell she was younger. It was always the greatest romance. I loved Micheal On the set. Was always a father figure I loved. I will remain loving all the series.

But what do u call the kiss between Laura and Almanzo in the circus episode, when Laura was dressed as a clown. Or the kiss a few seasons earlier between Laura and a young boy. Don’t those count

my mom introduced me to this show, certain episodes i dislike but i usually play it in background listening to it while i craft. :) but to be true on things, i liked the olsens allot lol why i dunno i guess thats just what i like. :p .............
that came as a HUGE surprise to me that both melissa did not get along at all behind the scenes and outside in real life , well well , always something new to learn .
From what I've heard and read, it was dictated by Michael Landon that there be "sibling rivalry" fostered between MSA and MG. Not sure why--maybe to get better performances out of them, perhaps--but it made no sense since Mary and Laura were very close IRL. If you watch closely, their storylines and characters were on different pages even when they shared the same scene. And though Landon and MG shared a father/daughter bond, it was MSA who was chosen to work in some of Landon's side projects. Also, MSA was a more professional and cultured actress than MG. MSA didn't really say anything about MG in her book--other than mention when Landon took them all to an amusement park and told them to keep it on the down-low, and MG announced to the whole park the cast was there. Landon was [ticked off].
"Little House on the prairie" and "Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman" are my favourite all times TV shows and I found many similarities between its characters, in my opinion: Laura Ingalls Wilder vs Doctor Michaela Quinn, Pa Charles Ingalls vs Byron Sully, Harriet/Nellie/Nancy Oleson vs Loren Bray/Jake Slicker/banker Preston A.Lodge III, Nels Oleson vs Dorothy Jennings, Carrie Ingalls vs Bryan Cooper, Albert Ingalls vs Bryan/Matthew Cooper, Mary Ingalls vs Ingrid/Colleen Cooper, Ma Caroline Ingalls vs Cloud Dancing, Reverend Alden vs Rev. Timothy Johnson ! But the main character Laura Ingalls Wilder cannot work separately, without Pa Charles or later her husband, Almanzo Wilder as Dr. Mike Quinn cannot go without Sully !
You didn't mention the fact that the one who played Albert and the one who played their friend Andy, are brothers in real life as well.

I was more surprised I was able to watch this even though it was unlisted-
4:30- Melissa and Alison were such great friends and had such a great time in the water fight scene they continued playing around in the water even after shooting of the scene ended; thus, the picture of the two of them covered in mud!
Melissa gilbert and alison arngrim used to have slumber parties at each other's home when they were teenagers.

But Sad part is its only SEASON 6 Episodes they are Showing over & over again so no Choice we Watch it Wish they Could Show us from Season 1 to 5 & All Episodes balance Seasons too ! I don't get it? If you watch the very first kiss between Almanzo(Manly) and Laura, it was entirely on the lips and not the cheek. She did it and Michael had a very serious talk with Dean Butler about how the scene needed to be done right the first time and it was. She also felt uncomfortable about being seen in the same bed as him when they finally married and had their own home, but she was able to do those scenes as well. Melissa Sue Anderson has publicly stated that there was no feud between her and Melissa, they just never became particularly close.
Just as I watched Little House on the Prairie to get away from politics back in the 1980s when Watergate was alive, today the Trump impeachment is alive so I watched Little House on the Prairie to get away from all the Trump Capitol invasion. While watching the series, I saw love, fairness and understanding. It is definitely something you don’t see in Congress and Washington, D.C. politics. Little House On The Prairie is good medicine and therapeutic.
So thank God for Little House on the Prairie ! It took me away from all the Washington Politicians hogwash. I watched All episodes of Little House from season one to season nine. They are shown on Peacock and it was such a release to watch all nine seasons. I LOVED IT !
It was a joy to put CNN on the back burner for a long while. I so wish Michael Landon was still alive because it appears he had a heart for fair government and a society of acceptance. May he rest in peace.

I have always loved Little House On The Prairie. If anyone has COZI TV on their television, they show 3 episodes a day of LHOTP. I'm front and center.
The Peacock channel has all nine years of Little House. I sit and watch beginning from season one all the way to season nine when it ended. Gets me away from all the politics.
It’s also on Up TV everyday from 9:00am-3:00pm eastern time. It used to be on Hallmark Drama on weekdays and weeknights but I think they took it off. I think it’s on the Hallmark Movies and mysteries in the mornings. I get all 3 of those channels, I love Little House on the Prairie to fall back on with all this crap happening in the world.
They show 2 episodes on Kanal 3 Puls at 11pm on weekdays, here in Denmark. Only show worth watching on TV, if you ask me.

It's also interesting that Matthew Laborteaux, played Charles Ingalls as a little boy, when Charles was reminiscing about his childhood in one or two of the episodes.
I believe many people were shocked that the Labyorteaux's were brothers, probably due to their hair colors. But to me, they still have the same smiles. Patrick is just a little older than Matthew.
@@SuperDevoria They were both adopted, they aren't actually biologically related, so maybe it is just a mannerism that in subconsciously picked up, maybe? I've noticed that similarity between adopted kids and their parents before...so stranger things have happened.

You didn't mention the adults relationship with each other. I remember reading that Mrs Oleson ( Katherine McGregor) and Ma Ingalls ( Karen Grassley) were good friends in real life. Ironic that Ma Ingalls is named Karen in real life.
