My great Aunt's school bus broke down in front of her home in Missouri. It was hot that day and the kids got off the bus to wait for a replacement and Laura brought out lemonade and cookies for the kids! One of her favorite stories to tell!
There weren't any buses in the 1800's.

For your information, Laura and Almonzo moved to Mansfield, MO in the late 1890s. They built a farmhouse there and that's where Rose was born. Laura died there in 1957. I assure you, indeed, there were school buses in the late 1940s and the 50s. That is not an unbelievable story. It is just the thing that an elderly Laura would do. Visit the museum in Mansfield and see Pa's fiddle and listen to the real Laura speak. It's wonderful. Then visit the cemetery in the middle of town where Laura, Almonzo, and Rose are buried.

I love Little House On The Prarie. I watch it everyday. Life was so simple and down to earth. I really wish living was like this today , no phones , cell phones , no computers. Clean simple living.
Simple but extremely hard, don't forget that.
And the average life expectancy was 40...
And if we didn’t have technology we wouldn’t be able to watch it on demand. So for that I’m grateful. But I know what you mean about a simpler time. ❤️

This makes me think about how quickly everything that we have and know changes after we're gone. In a relatively short time there's hardly anything recognizable about the lives of a town of people who lived there just 150 years ago, and it's hard to determine just where anything was...if it weren't for a hand dug well. So thankful for Laura's writings.
look at that simple living can you imagine no phones, ipods, FB, IG, Google. smh no drama no tv clean music and no reality shows. life was simple. today's society is just out of control.

Laura Ingalls wilder is one of my favorite author when I was young before it came a tv show and it's a great video as well

As a school girl, my parents gave me "Little House in the Big Woods," which I adored. I read most of the series, too. I remember thinking, "If I am a lucky enough to have a litle girl someday, I’d like to name her Laura." In 1982 my Laura was born!

You need to go to DeSmet South Dakota where Ma, Pa and Mary Ingalls last lived. They are all buried there too. Great place!
You need to check out Mansfield, MO where Laura and her family last ended up.

@@christianbrother4724 They did. Walnut Grove from the show is a real town and they have a huge museum dedicated to the books and the show. Many of the cast have visited and last year they had a big cast reunion. You can go outside of town to the site of the duggout house "On The Shores of Plum Creek" as well but the duggout house is gone now as it was really just a hole in the creek bank.

@Ellie5621 You do know some of us know how much work it is to live that way. We also know how simple it was compared to the difficulties of today. You would rather not because a bunch of settlers who kept themselves isolated went mad? I didnt know that was all settlers? Bugs and such eating them alive? That still happens today.....except now you have poisons in your food because no one likes those bugs....clothing is made of plastics now days, water is disgustingly polluted, need I say more? Hell yea I would love to go back then and learn the ways of that time

Thanks for the coverage I’m currently renting a house in Pennsylvania built in 1855 and I’ve been doing historical research on the builder learning so much I already found his gravesite and another house built by him up the street. Famous author Margaret Mead grew up in the house!

I grew up on that show...still is the most wholesome show to ever be on the little screen.
Oh Jordan, I LOVED IT! All that for $3.00. How cute was that lovely little gift shop and who wouldn't want to have a little picnic there. I loved 'Little House On The Prairie' and it nearly always bought a little tear to my eye. How funny was Harriet Olsen. The programme sure did make you appreciate the simpler things in life. Harriet Olsen ( the woman who played her) was a Terrific actress... She never missed a cue ., her facial expressions , screaming , she was just a natural …...… we use to laugh , because in high school , my girlfriends mother , Elsie , was EXACT to Mrs. Olsen... From the way she looked , to the way she acted , both like the good things of life , but both , when it came down to it ., were kind and generous ., I still laugh to this day with Elsie ., who passed away now , we use to call her Mrs. Olsen … She was hysterical … these were good people … and we sadly miss them all

@@sagitariosolitario774 the real Mrs Oleson was barely mentioned in the books, so her character is unknown. The actress who played her, Katherine MacGregor, was a funny lady, a great second mom to the kids on the show. And a good actress!

I have no idea why I'm so emotional seeing this...I grew up watching Little House on the Prairie and I actually watch the reruns every day. Laura Ingalls just knew how to pick out the beauty and enjoy the life she had. What a blessing to see this. I hope one day I am able to visit myself...

I grew up watching Little House and loved it! This was fantastic and I’m so happy you stopped. I live on the prairies in Canada and we have some old timey pioneer towns on display that I had to visit because it is so interesting to see how people used to live and how far we’ve come. It was nice to hear the nature sounds of the prairies in the vlog. So peaceful!

My father used to say that if more people could live that simple of a life, the world would be a much better place to be. My use of simple meaning without all the modern amenities like cell phones, electricity, running water, etc. I agree with him, it is so much more peaceful than the rat race we now live in.
Remember, those people only lived there because the original people were displaced. Neglecting to acknowledge that is romanticizing genocide.
We went to a childhood home of Laura's when we did a cross country road trip in a RV. We visited Walnut Grove Minnesota and Plum Creek, the location of the dugout home, from the 4th book in the series. It was fantastic and loved the Little House series.
I’ve been there. I loved wading in Plum Creek. I’d just come from Laurapalooza in Mankato, and then went on to DeSmet, SD where she met and married Almanzo.
Home is the nicest word there is was said on the show and not in the books.
The ultimate " family " show every show ended with an " inspirational " message. Half Pint Melissa Gilbert charmed America as did 🏈 legend Merlin Olsen.
I wanted to love the TV show but I just couldn't. I grew up with the books, as did so many others, and to me, the show was nothing like the books. I know it's TV and "entertainment" not history but still..... I loved Michael Landon in Bonanza but I read a quote from him that said he was nothing like Charles Ingalls. He said Charles Ingalls was always in debt...etc. etc...etc. Basically insulting. This bothers me because those books were written as a tribute to her father. I've also read quotes from people who knew her that, Laura herself would have hated the show.
It's a good thing that the show brought so much notice to the books but, try as I might, I just don't like the show.
Thanks for the great tour!! We live about 5 miles from this and have been there numerous times. It’s a great place for kids and truly a sweet peaceful place to just relax and imagine what life would have been like back then. When our kids were little they got to have a school day there, dressed the part, took their lunches in pails, and learned their lessons. They loved it!!

That first room in the schoolhouse is the coatroom. Those cans that looked kinda like paint cans were what the kids brought their lunches in. My mom went to a school like this in Missouri when she was young. She is the one that explained the coatroom.

This is awesome! I watched it here and there. My mom had them recorded on VHS tapes for us.
I live in MN and grew up 12 miles from Walnut Grove. My father set in motion the establishment of the roadside monument there that paved the way to the opening dugout site, museum, tourists etc. because he was the county engineer and discovered it while talking to the farmer while working with him on a road easement way back in the 50s. This is the only Ingalls-Wilder site I have not visited with my family ! Thank you, I especially like that you read all the nice quotes she wrote and that they posted.

Appomattox is a wonderful place to visit. It is a national park, and children can partake in the Ranger program.
I grew up 15 minutes from the real Walnut Grove Minnesota. Many towns that they mention in the TV show I’m very familiar with. My town is never mentioned, because it was not established until 1900.
They also have a museum dedicated to Little House on the Prairie in Walnut Grove.
Growing up when I watch the show, I never figured out why it looks so different from the real place. Not realizing that it was filmed out on a ranch in California. And stuff was done on a soundstage as well. But through kid eyes I could never figure out why it didn’t look like the real place smile.
In fact, I had swimming lessons in one of the towns they mention. The town is called Lamberton. They mentioned going there for supplies quite a bit in the show. As well as a town called Sleepy Eye in Springfield. Very familiar with these towns.
That was really interesting ! I loved the Laura Ingalls books. I'm from MN, and my grandma brought me to the Laura Ingalls museum in Walnut Grove.
Thank you for taking me back home today. I could swear I smelled the sweet smell of a warm sunny Kansas day. This vloge touched my heart, it brought back days of walking through butter cups, and the cool caress of the grass on my bare feet, and the sweet smell of clover in the air. God bless you Jordan. My Mom had sewn a dress, almost the exact pattern/color as hers. Even used 2 scrap strips tied to the bottom of my braids. A boy was mean & pulled on them. Everyone chanting mockingly: "Laura". I was a goody goody from Grade 1 - 5. Even getting an award for perfect attendance. Given to me at a school assembly. Ahhh seems so long ago. I love all the quotes on those signs. It still blows me away how the entire family all lived together in a 1 room cabin! And how they travelled by wagon. My Mom grew up on a farm. And went to a 1 room schoolhouse, just like in the tv show. Here I was spoiled by growing up in a big city. And a 2 floor big house. Pretty good for having a Single Mom supporting my bro & I. My Gramma looked after us too. She was my very best friend. **QUESTION: WHAT WAS THAT SOUND IN THE BACKGROUND? CRICKETS OR SPRINKLERS?**
ThankYOU so very much , for bringing this beautiful History to life ., to This day , (and I am 65 years old) I watch the reruns every night , I have seen them a thousand times , and STILL cry on most all of the episodes , I know times must have been tough back then in the late 1800's , but the PEOPLE were of honorable and full of traditions , hard work and Christian Values ., To ALL on Little House , especially Little Joe Cartwright ( as I remember him) Michael Landon ., WE LOVED YOU ALL!!!!! You gave us the very BEST childhood Memories , and Quality of Life ., We Miss you Dearly ., even Bunny , Bandit , and especially JACK … When she found him passed away in the barn , my heart broke ., to this day , I cannot watch that episode ., and my favorite was the BELL story , and The Lord is my Shepard , truly she was a great writer and sadly missed ~ Thankyou for showing me this , you did a great job and made me a very happy senior lady

One of my favorite tv shows. Grew up to them in the 1970's ( born in 1971) and still watch them today. The only one you won't see in its actual location is the one in Wisconsin because it was relocated and had to be restored due to decay. I live 2 hours and 40 minutes from Rocky Ridge farm here in Missouri.
WOW, these folks have done a remarkable job preserving this site. They deserve our respect and patronage!
Hopefully you can make it up to Walnut Grove, MN someday to see the things that relate more to the LHOTP show in particular.
My husband and I traveled by car from WV to Walnut Grove MN three years ago..... there is hardly anything at all there..... was so disappointed.

Thanks for pointing this out. I know it's silly but I hurt every time he said it. I grew up a few miles from Fort Osage (an historic site in Missouri) and attended Fort Osage High School, so of course the word was already familiar to me.
I'm actually related to the Inglles family. 4th cousin to Laura I think I would be. That's cool though

I read all of these books to my two children when they were very young. They are in their 30's now and they still remember me reading them. My Dad was born in 1916 in Nebraska, my Mom 1920 in Kansas. I have their stories that are quite like this. It was great seeing this. Thank you.

I live somewhere like this when I was a child. My father had a farm he had horses, cows, sheep & chickens. He didn't have running water. we had to haul water. In the morning we have to get a bucket of water. The only thing was different was we didn't wash our clothes by hand. we drove in town to wash our clothes & took a shower in the barn that my dad built. it sure was beautiful as a child. Now I live in the city with my mother.

Oh so many years that since my grandmother gave me the first Laura Ingells Wilder book. My best friend borrowed one that spring & became so engrossed she barely spoke to anyone for months until she had read the whole collection. How cool to see this all . Fantastic vlog Jordan ! Loved that old Post office.

Bill Kurtis, one of the owners, was raised on that property. He is the Bill Kurtis of CBS News. He did the nightly news and the CBS morning show among many other news programs. He is a celebrity in Kansas, and has these Laura Ingalls ties too.

Over my lifetime, I have watched every episode of Little House at least 2 or 3 times. Later in years, anytime I would find it on a channel, regardless if I had seen the episode before, I would watch it. I continue to watch it today. I would have loved to have lived in that era. I know life was hard, but it was so simple, and people were more respectful of each other. That is what this modern-day time is missing, Simple and Respect!!!!! Appomattox courthouse was where Grant and Lee signed the surrender of the Civil War in 1865. It is pronounced App - o- mat - tox.
