Entendre Jonas Kaufmann chanter cet air en vrai est encore tout autre chose... sans la médiation de l'enregistrement, sa voix nue est incroyablement belle ; elle passe des diminuendo les plus intimes à des crescendo fabuleux dans la même phrase musicale et créée une émotion incroyable ; on n'en sort pas intact....il faut absolument essayer de l'entendre en vrai une fois au moins même si c'est difficile d'avoir des places...
enfin un ténor non-français qui respecte la syntaxe, les liaisons et la partition avec forte/piano sur la montée finale sib sans détimbrer ! brillantissime. Aber achtung pas trop de ' r ' roulés.... Vielen Dank Herr Kaufmann
que bueno poder escuchar, por CZcams, a tan maravilloso tenor de este siglo, ademas de apasionado en el rol que representa, y como dice una que comenta, es ademas buenmozo y muy varonil, tuve la oportunidad de verlo en persona en Salzburgo este verano en la bellisima opera Fidelio de Beethoven, es increible su voz y como representa el sufrimiento del hombre preso injustamente alejado de su amor. Kaufmann's voice is clearly not to everyone's taste. Its heavier with more baritonal sound then some care for in a tenor. No he's not Corelli or Bjorling, or even Bergonzi. He is however the greatest tenor of his generation (an argument could also be made for Alagna). I personally don't share reservations about Kaufmann. He has four things I wish for in a singer in a staged opera, a good voice, appropriate appearance, acting ability, and most importantly, he communicates the meaning of the text, not just producing a series of pretty sounds. An opera performance isn't tested against some "ideal" standard, its tested by its audience. Here the audience is clearly more then satisfied. But, then each to their own taste.
I like what he did at 3:28 (Et j'étais une chose á toi). The only other tenor who I know ends it with a softer head voice for dramatic effect is Carreras. It sounds so perfect!
His sound is just wonderful. The quality and the high notes. He just knows how to sing and focus that voice so well. Placement and resonance are astounding. His voice is the gift that just keeps on giving.
My first reaction is to exclaim that he is the greatest tenor of all time. But I have to control myself. I'll settle for the greatest tenor alive for now. I may have to revise that assessment back to 'of all time'. Pretty damn great. BTW I'm digitizing all of Carmen.
Some of the comments on here are bizarre. How many of the people commenting on this have spent months / years studying the role and then successfully sung Don José at all, let alone hundreds of performances in major houses around the world with mixed acoustics, large orchestras, incredible personal stress and after punishing rehearsal schedules? Not many I'll bet. Saying that an aria sung by a vocal athlete of this calibre is "awful" is unbelievably ignorant and saddening. For all those that are comparing him to old recordings of turn of the 20th century tenors, just consider that when those recordings were made, most of the lower overtones disappeared in the old recording methods, and they were sped up to fit on old LPs etc. The voices sounded thinner and more direct on recording. So it's very difficult to know what Caruso, Gigli etc really sounded like in relation to Kaufmann. Its perfectly possible Caruso sounded similar. One can like or dislike it, but saying it's awful or trying to comment on a technique / muscle process he's spent 30 years developing and one knows absolutely nothing about is a stretch...
Alexander Grove As a consumer of opera we’re entitled to critically evaluate a performance. Just because we can’t do It doesn’t mean we’re not entitled to form an opinion. Other consideration is that authenticity is highly prized. Kaufman is excellent. He’s a genius but the interpretation is not satisfactory. He’s got the ‘it’ factor but the current fashion for singers who look like matinee idols is rather commercial. Here he is too heroic. Don Jose is the beta male Escamillo is the alpha male. Kaufman sings Don Jose like a heroic tenor. The interpretation needs to suggest more of the weak sentiment of a fawning moon calf. Yes it’s a concert performance but if you can’t believe it, you simply can’t believe it.

He reminds me so much of Dietrich Fischer Dieskau. Brilliant musician? Yes. Beautiful sound? Clearly. But I have a feeling that any tenor trying to copy him would be in a World of pain.
The video doesn't do justice to how he sounds in the opera house. Thankfully, I had the pleasure of listening to him at the Met. Simply magnificent. There is a reason the big houses want him to sing.
Este tenor actualmente esta cantando divino, no en este video, pero si en la gala del 2011 en Berlín, tiene una voz muy, muy bella y potente, por qué son tan duros con la crítica.
Javier Funes estuvo en Buenos Aires en el Colón el 14/8/16 hizo hasta 7 bises fue maravilloso yo soy un fans de Jonas.... Hay gente con nostalgia del Belpassatto y se cierra a nuevas herramienta de la Lirica y no se puede vivir del pasado y lo malo son las comparisiones sin amplitud de criterio y lo que es peor piensan que la Opera estás muerta o en peligro de extincion, porque no abren la cabeza a una nueva interpretacion....
