Fuming Demonstration : Fumed Latticcino/Zanfirico Fuming fun

  • I'm not quite sure what to call this but it's something similar to a latticcino/zanfirico cane. Only, as opposed to using colored rods, fuming is done instead to create the designs inside the glass
    I'm using a 9mm blowtube attached to a ~19mmX2mm piece of tubing that I flare out into a conical section, then after fuming the interior of the flare several times, I'll stripe lines of clear rod in the center (in this demo it's only 4 lines at north, south, east, and west within the flare) I'll fume again after laying the lines then condense the whole mass so it becomes a gather.
    After condensing into a gather, I'll attach a punty and start to twist so the fumed portion, along with the laid down lines, start making really cool, zanfirico/latticcino-type rotations within the glass.
    Great technique that can be used to make fumed horns, fumed cane, nice little pendants, whatever you can think of. Happy melting, and any questions, feel free to ask!
    Also, the song is by Maxence Cyrin off of her 2010 album called Novo Piano (and of course, the original is "Where is My Mind" by the pixies!)

    Song Title is... With Your Feet On The Ground.... it’s real title is Where Is My Mind by the pixies but if Google search “with my feet on the ground my head in the air”, this piano version comes up. Cheers 🍻

    What are your gas pressures set at at the regulators for O2 and LP.
    Also, when 'baking it in" or any number of points in the process what type of flame are you using?
    I noticed the flame chemistry change and that certainly is information that would help.

    I enjoy your tutorials and have the same torch. One question I notice you seem to work in very lightly shaded glasses for boro. Has this caused you any issues?

    • @alexshore8115
      @alexshore8115  Před 7 lety

      You know, if I'm blowing glass for more than a couple hours at a time, I notice I get a minor headache. I used to have shade 5 tinted glasses and recommend those for sure. It's a trade off between higher visibility during fuming and better protection for other techniques/things I'm doing on the torch.

      @hotfiyah Před 6 lety +2

      Mike Yazel Either get shade 3 or 5. I would HIGHLY recommend that you do not do what this guy is doing. He's working just using Dydimium with no shade, which is very harmful to your eyes when fuming. Most people will tell you if you're fuming, then shade 5 is the way to go. Don't use a worse lens just because you can't see. Get better lighting in your studio if that's the problem. A $30 shop light is better and cheaper than not being able to see right because you were too lazy to go buy a light.

      A shade 3 lens is what is in those glasses you see him wearing
      Although I think he mentioned he recommends a shade 5 lens in his previous comment.

      Those glasses are shade 3 lens, I own a pair and have been glassblowing for thousands of hours with no i'll effects to eyesight.

    Thats too much silver. A lighter coat would give better colors.

      Yup. I started getting brighter blue when i just put one light layer of silver and then clear (dots) over it.
