As a Black American woman I have to say I can understand the negative influence the years of only seeing "European " beauty standards. This is sad because Asian women are beautiful with their natural features, I think we all need to work on the thoughts inside our head.
Oh yeah no doubt. I was in denial of this for a long time and have started to make peace with this. My dads asian and my mom is a light skin black woman. I always felt off and unattractive because I felt that “white” was the only way for me to be attractive and be whole. I waged a long war against myself and now I don’t really know what to do
i dont even know why/how/when white beauty standards were implemented in me as such a young girl. i remember thinking "when i turn 18, im changing my name to Emily", looking up how to go blonde, and avoided the sun/covered up skin no matter how warm it was. only noticed white boys.

I understand too. When I was younger, I wanted long, straight hair and I wished my nose was more narrow and pointier, because of being bombarded with European standards of beauty on TV. That’s all you saw in bikinis, as love interests, models, etc. It’s wild that facial features can be demonized, when it’s something natural and beyond our control outside of plastic surgery. We don’t all have to look a certain way to be attractive.
I’ve learned to love my skin, my hair, and my nose. I have a lot of Native American in my family so my nose has a hump in it. I used to want to shave it down but not anymore.

I left home to study abroad alone at a young age. When I turned 18, upon one Christmas visit back home, I was dragged to a renowned plastic surgeon in Taiwan by my mother to get a “double eye lid” surgery. I’m grateful to that famous surgeon for refusing to perform the operation and kept my monolid eyes. As a top plastic surgeon in the country, he observed my mother quietly, and assured me gently that my eyes are “special”.
Absolutely scary: to be almost literally ambushed and dragged to any not needed eye lid surgery! Eye lids are not merely "curtains" on our "windows" and I dread the thought of any complications with blinking (keeping eyes clean,fresh, protected)
That plastic surgeon, Dr. Youn, and the like are treasures. We should not erase these truly precious features that make us all unique. We need to protect these features. I'm glad to hear you were spared from this butchery.

@jufrota8017 it's a shame, really. You will have much nicer skin when you are older, and by not dumping chemicals into your hair, it will be healthier. If you keep looking, surely you will find someone who appreciates your beauty. I love natural beauty, and that's one thing that really attracts me to my wife. Find someone who loves YOU, and natural beauty, and the fact that you have lighter skin and nice, but flatter hair, and they will also love that about you.
My son hated his ears as a child and asked me to have plastic surgery. I told him that when he has children his plastic surgery cannot be inherited and his children will have large ears too. He thought about it and changed his mind about having surgery. It's important to teach self love and acceptance.
I used to wish there was some way I could make my wavy hair permanently straight like the other asian girls, but of course there isn't. I would spend up to an hour straightening my hair every day, would pay hundreds of dollars to get it chemically straightened and it didn't even really work. When my daughter's hair started growing in and she had a head full of curls just like myself when I was a toddler, I immediately stopped straightening my hair. I didn't want her to go through life hating her hair like I did.
This is actually a good point, and I think about this sometimes when I see people have surgery that drastically changes their appearance. If they have kids, those kids aren't going to look like them and I sometimes wonder if we are going to see more kids that are affected mentally by the fact their biological parents look more "perfect" than they do.
I used to think my ears stuck out, but my face shape just affects it. It’s hard to know that as a kid! Thanks Mom!

@A H I saw a video not too long ago that was about plastic surgery in China. They interviewed a boy who felt his ears stuck out too much. So he got surgery for that. Within 2 years, suddenly, sticking out ears were considered adorable, so he had them put back the way they were! Fashion always changes. 😊 What you don't like about your looks today could be the next big thing tomorrow.
My boyfriend is interracial (Filipino/British & Irish), and has what is referred to in the video as a “classic Asian nose” as well as tanned skin. I have never once thought for a second those traits were unattractive. So sad how society makes people believe their natural features are something to be ashamed of.

The comments of people who often don't realize the harm they inflict or sometimes they do. My eye color is naturally very light green. They appear to be different colors depending on what I'm wearing or my health or my mood. Blue when I'm very happy. Brown when I'm ill or very sad. Yellow when I'm in sunlight or very bright light.
My mother told me, as a child that I was full of diarrhea which was why my eyes were green.
During recess, at school, when it was sunny, my eyes turned yellow. The other children were so mean, calling me "Vampire".
It seemed that everyone had brown colored eyes or blue ~ then there was me.
When I left my parents home, at adult age, I realized that the color of my eyes was something other people thought was very attractive. Love 'em or not, they work just fine.
The classic images are from stereotype of Asian looks ever since Opium War, and they all know why in Asia especially China, and anti-Japan because of Pearl Harbour, anti-chinese because of communism... what is the Asian look, Asia is huge with different regions and different looks, monolid eyes and lower nose than westerners are just as numerous as other looks. It's only a small part that feeds western evaluation of "Aliens", more exotic and outworlderly, more featured as demons whenever needed.
I'll never forget the first time I saw a black girl my age; I was probably 4 and I told my Mom that I wanted to look like her. I ran up to her and we started talking. I was mesmerized by the braids in her hair; I really thought I could look like her, maybe when I got older. My Mom and the girl's Mom were having a conversation and I said to the girl's Mom that I wanted to be her Sister and to look like her. I'll never forget the Woman's laughter; she tried explaining to me why it was impossible. Then I saw her tear up and she bent down and gave me the biggest and best hug of my little life. That beautiful little girl's face is still etched in my mind and I'm about to be 63. I was awestruck by her beauty and the colour of her skin. Then I secretly wished she was my Mom. I felt so guilty about wanting to have my own Mom replaced that when I said my prayers that night I asked God to understand that I really didn't want my Mom replaced, I just wanted us to look like them.
Yes, this is so cool and it just goes to show that beauty comes in all forms. I too, was envious of a little black girl in preschool because of her amazing hair and cool braids. I especially loved how her beaded hair ties would click together when she moved. I wondered why my hair couldn't do that too, and I wished that my hair would just stick together when being braided instead of being so slippery.
Same lol. When I was in kindergarten my best friend was black. I remember going into her mom’s room and seeing all the different hair products. I was so jealous and wanted hair just like them. My friend’s mom would braid my hair in micro braids and I even got my grandma to give me a perm. Funny thing is growing up girls would always tell me they were jealous of my hair because it was long and straight. Now as an adult I’m content with what I have but I still admire natural black hair from afar. Guess we always want what the other person has.

I’m half Asian and half Caucasian like your kids. I ended up having a double lid, but I’ve always looked at the Asian members of my family with mono lids and throughout my life I’ve wished I had them too because to me they are so beautiful. Thanks for promoting beauty in all forms. In all types of people, from different backgrounds or in us biracial people!

Oh, I hated my monolids growing up. It's easier in society to have doubles, I think . And draw cat eyes with the eyeliner, lol!

Growing up Korean in a 99% white small town this video made me feel better and cry at the same time. Being made fun of growing up and being called slant-eyes I would've given ANYTHING to look like my white peers. Now as a 36 year old I'm finally comfortable in my own skin. Also moving away helped. I'm pretty sure You're still beautiful as a Korean or simply as a sensitive, emotional human being. The peace you have now inside will reflect on the outside. You needed that balance and You have it now. "LOVE YOURSELF!" is not only a catchy slogan to find on a t-shirt. It's probably the best advice to hear and to take. No one will love you more. We're not perfect, but it's not about that at all all. The key is to be happy. I'm glad you have that now. Take care .😊
As a Korean, I remember my mom took me to a surgeon when I was 11 to do the double eyelid surgery. I was terrified and start crying and begging the surgeon not to do so. But now I am 20, and I was thinking about doing the surgery since it makes you look "cuter". After watching this video, I start to think that if it is only an emotional need, and maybe I don't need it at all if I can think better of myself.

Koreans are a bit paradoxical- they put extreme importance in being “korean” but then alter themselves to be less korean

Monolid was one of my insecurities back in school because people tease me for my small eyes. I learn how to love myself by practicing in front of a mirror and constantly giving myself encouragement, telling myself that I look kinda cute and it's unique since it's very hard to look for someone who looks exactly the same as me. It's like hypnotizing myself and as time goes by, I sincerely believe it 😂
My uncles, aunts and some of my cousins also had small eyes so when we smile, we look very similar and I really love that. Genes are so strong sometimes 🤗

It’s actually crazy how people make fun of us Asians for having slanted eyes but now everyone wants to get an eye lift to make their eyes have a Fox-eye look aka slanted.
I, a Caucasian woman from 🇨🇦, adopted my daughter from China about 20 years ago. As a young child she had one very droopy eyelid that had the potential to impact her vision. So we saw a (Caucasian) specialist, who told us that he could absolutely repair it surgically, and that, of course, he would do some extra tweaking to add a crease, AND operate on the other perfectly healthy lid to add a crease there too. She was 4 years old! Needless to say, we never saw that doctor again, the droopy lid resolved on its own as she grew, and she is now a beautiful young woman.

I'm so tired of white features being the universal beauty standard. When I visited my family in Vietnam, in all the houses I visited the women had lotions and soaps that promised a whitening effect. Meanwhile in the west people risk getting skin cancer just for a tan skin. Humans always want what they don't have.
I do have a very flat nose but the only thing that annoys me about it is that my glasses keep sliding down 🤣

The difference between whiteners and browners is: not every household in Europe has browners stocked. I've visited way more households here in Germany than I have in Vietnam and I've never seen anyone use browners (doesn't mean that these people don't exist, just that it's not as common). Meanwhile in Vietnam it is way more normalised to try to be as pale as possible - like I stated above, every single household I visited there has at least one woman that used whitening creams. All the celebrities you see on TV there have pale skin even though the average Vietnamese person is several shades darker.
One thing I can’t stand about Asian parents (as an Asian myself) is that they never fight for their or their kids dignity. It’s always “Well, you need to change than so people won’t make fun of you.” And they pound that into your head, making sure to always remind you that others are talking crap about you whenever they don’t like your appearance.
That is because Asian society places high value on your “social score” or your reputation with society and how you are viewed by it.
I think that comes from the generalized immigrant mentality where they are anxious and desperate to fit in. Except if you are Scots Irish. Then you rebel against anything and everything and you don't give a crap. Unless possibly the queen mother would object. Yuk, yuk. 😆 Keep being a bad ass and be your own person. You the monster!

True. Growing up as an Asian with a “flat, wide typical Asian nose” I was always told to get a rhinoplasty if I want to look attractive. I wish Asian parents would build their kids’ self-esteem or confidence instead of constantly putting them down and belittling everyone. The world is tough enough when you’re just trying to blend in. It’s even tougher when you have features that make you stand out.

I don’t remember my parents EVER just giving me a compliment on anything without adding some sort of criticism. As a woman who had an Asian Mullato grandmother, who married a full blood Seminole native, whose child my mother married an Irishman. All I can say is that beauty comes in all shades and ethnicities. I married a black man and have children and grandchildren with green eyes, blue eyes, brown eyes, hazel eyes, and all skintones. Slanted eyes and round eyes naturally in one family. Yet we all love each other, and no one makes comparisons to each other. It will be a wonderful world when humans are just referred to as human beings or the human race period.

Went to the Philippines to visit family. It was impossible to find any kind of skin cream or soap that didn’t whiten. Colorism is huge.
That's why i just use baby soaps 😂
That predates western influence. They have always sought light skin because it means you don't have to work outside. Peasants are dark. If you are light Filipino you're rich and sit indoors. This isn't because of westerners.

As someone with bulbous eyes which have a deep set double lid, I’ve always thought that monolids looked beautiful. I think the flat lid coming down from the eyebrow looks much more welcoming and softer than my eyes. I think it definitely helps to keep a youthful appearance too
I’m the same way; I’ve always been jealous of people with less eyelid, but I’d never think less of anyone for having large eyelids. You’re your own worst critic, right? 😅

I have big eyes with big eyelids. I hated them growing up. They are, hands down, my best feature. I was just uncomfortable being different. Some people think they’re absolutely gorgeous, some people don’t. I don’t really care about either opinion. As you get older you just get more comfortable in your skin… now if could just get rid of these damn stretch marks 😂

When you said that when you saw your daughter on the day she was born you knew "she was the most beautiful girl I'd seen in my life" just just had to smile and laugh. It's true. New Dads fall in love instantly and their little baby girls ARE the most beautiful. My husband did when I gave birth to our daughter and they remain very close, even though she's going to turn 35 this year.
I'm getting close to my surgery date, but it's not to look 'beautiful'. I've lost an enormous amount of weight (no, no bariatric surgery) and in a couple months I will have a bracheoplasty (arms) which is a quality of life issue for me.

I was the same way when my son, who is half chinese/half dominican, was born. I already loved him during pregnancy, but I fell even more in love with him when I finally saw him for the first time and thought he was the most beautiful little boy I'd ever laid eyes on. He has my monolids and my SO's darker skin tone and I wouldn't change him for the world.

I'm half Asian and half European. I've got a monolid and my sister has a double lid. Growing up, I always wanted Western eyelids. Mainly because all the beauty and fashion magazines only had eye makeup advice for double eyelids. As an adult, I'm very much happier in my appearance and am glad I never had surgery.

Certain Caucasian, Black and etc groups also have this specific feature (not as much as East Asian/ Asian, native American, Siberian and etc but there are)!

There is yet another no man's land between the mono lid and the double lid...the dreaded hooded eye lid. Yes, you have a separate eyelid and a crease; but the upper lid coming down from the brow bone totally obscures the lid with only a little along lash line peaking out. Hooded lids assassinate eye shadow. You are left with shadow on the brow bone and a greasy little bead in the crease and along the lash line which you only notice when you tilt your head back as if you have a nose bleed. Oh well. There are worse things in life.
It breaks my heart when other ethnicities want to look white. I know social media doesn’t help with it pushing for western beauty, but I think it is important to stop looking at others for beauty but see the beauty in you. We are all unique and beautiful in our own ways.
Having to stay true to your race to avoid people criticising you is itself racist. People should be free to look however they want, whether it matches the race they were born into or not.

@@morganreigns1984 Only ~50% of Asians have monolids. Africans and Indians dont tend to have monolids. So it's unfair to say a person who gets surgery is anti-Asian or pro-white.

I have a student in South Korea and it makes me so sad when I hear her say that Korean skin isn't pretty, and that white skin is just better. I think all people are beautiful, but it's so deeply ingrained in her that the paler the skin, the prettier someone is. :(
Meanwhile Caucasians are tanning because we hate being so pale and would rather be darker. This standard needs to change.

But its roots are in classisim. Just like it was for Europeans. Thats why when the rich started going on hoildays to sunny places and getting tan skin. It became pale skin is no longer beautiful now tan skin is in the west.

This topic was also covered by Dr Gary Linkov in his reaction video to a recent documentary about how parents in Japan make their children undergo the surgeries, it's devastating. Diversity is so important in the world. It's great that more and more surgeons speak about ethics and ridiculous beauty standards. It's so sad that so many people feel the need for their kid to undergo a surgery...
I don't why is this considered devastating. It's already a normal habit to most Asians because white people exists and knowing about their natural beauty it gets challenging to love themselves. Condemning them isn't going to work.
Japanese society is anything but diverse, and beauty standards isn’t the main issue.
Thank you so much for this video. I am a mixed-race person with an East Asian mom. When I moved to the mainland from Hawaii, that was the first time I experienced hate for being mixed-race. I got hate from a lot of Asians, actually, which really pained me. Us mixed kids are still considered trash in many places. They made terrible inferences about my mother and people made all sorts of assumptions about my father that simply weren't true. I was a child and I didn't understand why my existence and appearance was so politicized. For context, I grew up in San Francisco during the 90s, in a heavily Asian-American city, during a time when we had "race wars". All this to say that I also experienced extreme objectification by many women wanting to get plastic surgery to get features that looked like mine, but at the same time saying how they were "pure" (insert ethnicity here). Even within my father's side of the family, which has been mixed-race for generations, I was considered "Oriental" and exotic. It was gross. My own mom to a certain extent also had that kind of mindset, really latching onto that once I hit puberty, and my appearance and features became a sick sort of clout she held over other women in ways that made me really uncomfortable.

I always thought the “Stop AAPI Hate” movement that went on a couple years back was so funny and ironic because most of that hate is actually Asians who hate other Asians. I’m guessing they assumed that your father took advantage of your mother or something during war times, because that was a real situation that happened to many women especially in the Southeast, it was basically a trend amongst American soldiers to go to those countries and bring back an asian wife. What I’m trying to say is, it’s kind of warranted considering the things they’ve done to multiple countries. It’s not right, and it’s extremely difficult to get past that when your family has been directly affected by that country’s actions. Lots of Asians are very patriotic and prideful of their countries, so this will create many conflicts

2. You no longer look like yourself
3. You Try to change your race
4. You Pretend that it's real
5. You put others down for not getting surgery
6. Your decision to get surgery is because of what someone else told you, and not strictly based on what you wanted. If you aren't getting surgery without an outsiders influence then it is indeed too far.
Honestly I feel that surgery should be used for people who actually need it. Such as a broken nose, their jaw not being properly in place. I don't think that small surgery is too far however, such as lip injections, and Botox (although I personally think it's ugly and only pretty naturally on people) I feel it's better when surgery is used for actual problems. Beauty has become way too limited. Do you know how obnoxious it feels to have everyone get surgery to try to look like me? You began to feel ugly even though others are getting surgery specifically because you are beautiful to them. At some point every single person who fits the standard of beauty will lose that beauty. Why? Because you're no longer unique. It's why so many pretty people are being called average as we speak. The women to the left is so unique and gorgeous in her features and skin, yet we are being suffocated with women who look like the one on the right. Everyone is becoming a clone and pretending that's what they naturally look like on top of it. It's gone too far. Beauty has become less in the eye of the beholder and more subjected every single day.
There are clinics in Korea and China who have almost a quick menu of faces they can go for. It’s no longer accentuating YOUR unique appearance, it’s creating a whole new person.

My last teaching stint in Korea was in a middle school. I wondered why so many of the girls seemed to have suffered eye injuries because they had gauze patches over one eye. Somebody explained to me that they were getting their eyelid surgery. IN MIDDLE SCHOOL! Also, the fashion magazines have the same sorts of sections as western fashion mags -- makeup, hair, clothes, accessories, and so on. But they also had a section for plastic surgery. Including nipples! EDITED TO ADD: Skin whitening creams were everywhere. A mommy gave me a jar as a gift. I'm a blond-haired blue/green eyed Caucasian of Germanic descent. All I could think was, "How much whiter does she think I should get?"

I don't know if this sounds weird, but I think the popularity of make-up videos on CZcams and Tik-Tok play some role. It's frustrating when you watch videos of makeup looks that don't work on your face, or make you feel like your features are "wrong". I'm speaking as someone who has very hooded eyelids - a lot of popular eyeliner or eyeshadow looks don't work great on me. I know it's also an issue for people who are older and have wrinkles. So I'd imagine it also affects Asian people and people with darker skin tones.
Most people on CZcams are
not real makeup artists. Educated and credentialed ones have techniques for different facial types, skin tones and ages.
Yes as I have aged eye makeup is a difficult but I rarely wear makeup 😂
theres a technique to apply eyeliner for hooded eyelids. Those vids exist. You can't expect all make-up tutorials to work on the same person.
@@alisonfraser8231 I think for makeup, u don't need to only follow real makeup artists. I learn more from an Asian makeup influencer with my features than a professional white makeup artist. In fact, I got laughed at and made fun of during my prom bc of makeup I got done from a non Asian professional MUA. I found an Asian MUA who learned from youtube who does a phenomenal job where I get a lot of compliments from my makeup. It seems that it is hard for non-Asians to work with Asian faces (even if I have double eyelids too)

I noticed that it's not just skin care and plastic surgery that's geared towards European standards. A few years ago I had surgery on my hand to remove a ganglion. I was given a sheet with post surgical care information telling me I should contact my primary care physician if the wound gets bright pink or red. I have dark skin, I'm assuming they wanted me to look out for infection, or hematoma but on dark skin you won't see any redness 🙄😒
I have grandparents and relatives of dark skin (native American from the south of the continent) and they get redness! Not every dark skin works the same just like not every light or medium skin works the same!
I was hoping you'd also mention how the US Military encouraged their Korean translators (mostly male) to have eyelid surgery, because the American soldiers thought that they looked untrustworthy with their small monolid eyes

When I first started watching Korean dramas and K-pop in 2008, what attracted me the most was their unique and fresh looks. I found that quite appealing and fascinating. Fast forward to 2023, The whole Korean entertainment industry's beauty appeal changed, and similar-looking actresses/actors dominate the Kdrama land while Western beauty standards are favored in the K-pop industry. Hope everyone is appreciated the way they are!

They all look the fkn same! Literally can’t tell them apart. And I’m Asian, so I’m normally good at that. But they get the same exact surgeries and have the same exact beauty standards/goals so they come out looking the exact same. It’s so boring and honestly kind of embarrassing seeing them try so hard to act white (flashback to the ONE kpop black pink? video I watched where the lyrics were “Not shy! Not shy! Not shy!” X10 and they’re dancing hip hop and singing along to it in a heavy Asian accent😂 so cringe.. esp when they try to twerk but it looks so bad because they have flat butts 😂 maybe butt implants will be the next big Korean plastic surgery trend?). I think that’s why squid game became so popular amongst Americans vs the other Korean shows on Netflix. It’s because they used real looking people who you can actually tell apart.

I'm slavic and I genuinely never understood the craze of double eyelids or a european nose, I've always thought monolids were beautiful, I don't get how they would look "stoic" or "passive," they look pretty and soft. I have hooded eyes and a kinda-strong brow bone and I can look stoic or mean at a glance.
I’m Mediterranean (Native American and Caucasian, btw) and I notice, at least here in my home-country (where the majority of the Caucasian community is of Mediterranean background), many people perceive the Slavic (specially those of “pure” background) as mean by their features at a first glance… The fun thing is that one of the quietest and sweetest school friends I made was a girl of Slavic ancestry! 😂

There are very few Slavic people of "pure" background since "pure" Slavs would look no different from a German, Anglo or Celt of pure stock. The concept of a "Slavic" look is a myth since it's actually the result of the mongrelization of Slavs with alien races which leads to the diversity you see in eastern European countries and Russia.

Growing up with monolids I didn’t know they were considered unattractive until I was exposed to other people’s expectations and opinions. Now I’m an adult and I still have my monolids and while I have my moments of insecurity they’re part of me and I wouldn’t change them.❤

The funny thing is it's obvious to everyone but the internet likes to pretend that this double eyelid surgery, and high nose bridge surgery is just something that came out of thin air.
I was so shocked when my friends in junior high had eyelid surgery or even nose surgery in some cases. But I guess it makes sense since 99% of people I knew had braces at some point as a kid. If you will do one, it isn’t too much a leap to do the other.
I just hope that in the future this stops as we know the risks of doing stuff as a growing young person ( mentally or physically). I am okay with surgery or teeth work done if it is really an issue , but if it is cosmetic then maybe people should wait till they are grown enough to choose.
I can't say how it works in other countries, but even as a kid 20 years ago, my dentist refused to put braces on me, because it was only deemed "cosmetic". This includes a canine and an incisor that's turned 30 degrees (sideways), a missing incisor, and another incisor that is bordering on being completely outside the row of teeth. I absolutely hated my teeth as a teenager. But if I want braces (and possibly a fake tooth) I would have to pay for it myself.
Here they never put braces on kids, if it's only cosmetic. Even if it might affect a kid's self-esteem..
I agree. Our bodies and facial features change even in our early 20's. That's about when we know what our adult face will look. I hate seeing those who regret their choice because there face changed and the new nose no longer fits the face.

Where I am in Canada, almost every kid I knew had braces or some sort of retainer at some point , even for very minor reasons. It was a very painful time in my experience and I ended up needing to get further work on my teeth when I was older since I think I had them taken off too early. If I had waited till I was older, it might have stayed more since my mouth and face wouldn’t have still be changing. I also know many kids that said they didn’t want braces so they never looked after them properly , damaging/staining their adult teeth permanently.
Nonono there's a difference between braces to put your teeth in a better position for later use and only cosmetic changes - especially at young age. Here in Germany many kids have braces due to health issues and little nose or eyelid jobs.
Braces can be applied for aesthetic reasons but often they are done due to medical reasons (crossbite, overbite, underbite, overcrowding, etc - all of these affect the way someone chews/eats she sometimes even how comfortable they breathe)There are many cases where straightening your teeth and fixing your bite are necessary to have a healthy, normally functioning mouth and jaw. Double eyelid surgery is only cosmetic and has no medical benefit.

As someone who has felt insecure over being pale and how un-Asian I look compared to my sister (we're both 1/4 Japanese) and even some of my non Asian friends look more Asian, seeing the opposite on a wide scale over the past decade is kinda baffling, like neither of us is satisfied but also why the actual hell would you wanna look like me when I would have liked looking just 1% more Asian to avoid being called a liar during elementary school when talking about part of my own family history 😓
I am also 25% Japanese and experienced similar things being called a liar as a kid. As I got older, my eyes started taking on a more Asian shape. I went from being called a liar to “Oh I thought you were Irish with weird eyes.” Which feels…slightly racist. Not like hate-crime racist but definitely leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
My little boy is 1/4 Navajo and people are skeptical until he talks Navajo then they're like "Oh. Yeah, he's Navajo alright" lol

I'm Asian and I grew up wanting to have a taller nose and whiter complexion like everyone else. Filipinos do prefer to look Caucasian (because we have been colonized for over 3 centuries and having fair skin became the beauty standard) so it became so normal to use whitening products. Luckily, when I moved to Canada 7 yrs ago, the pressure to having fair skin has stopped. I still love having my fair skin so I don't like tanning or bronzing up but I don't actively use whitening products anymore like before when I was younger. Also, at 37, I have come to love my features and will not wish to have plastic surgery anymore. 😊

You said the pressure to have fair skin has stopped but then literally right afterwards say you still try to maintain having fair skin by avoiding things that could darken it ie tanning from the sun. So I guess the pressure really hasn’t stopped because then you wouldn’t care if you got tan or not.
@@stancexpunks I will never do tanning under the sun coz I am afraid of getting skin cancer and excessive sun exposure ages skin fast. Majority of Asians I know are very cautious of that and we use a lot of sunscreen on an every day basis as part of our skin care.
I don't want to get dark coz I have come to love my natural skin tone which is exactly my point. I don't actively do anything to change my natural skin color.
If you are naturally fair and you want to become tan, isn't that the same as wanting to have whiter skin coz you naturally have darken skin? Everyone is the same, we each have our opinion of what looks beautiful 🙂

The prevalence of plastic surgery in Korea really is so concerning and can be a bad influence on everyone, especially kids who are coming into themselves. I remember back in high school I watched so many beauty/makeup videos from Korean creators and was so frustrated I didn't have a crease because my eye makeup would never look as good as theirs! I knew that plastic surgery was common and was happy about the way I looked, but I was sad I didn't see anyone who looked like me even though they were from my "home" country
The prevalence of rape in Korea also connects this trend to a particularly sick kind of misogyny. Looking at it more carefully only makes it uglier.

I think it's a bit simplistic to suggest that East Asians are all trying to look European. Most of the beauty ideals mentioned here aren't specifically European or necessarily associated with Western influence.
For eyelid surgery specifically, one factor is that monolid eyes often appear smaller (or at least, that's something people _think_ about monolids). Large eyes are instinctually associated with beauty/cuteness and youth in humans, across cultures. Given there aren't many other surgical ways to make your eyes appear larger, it makes sense that eyelid surgery would be pretty common, with or without European influence.
When it comes to noses, those are more fashion dependant, but its also notable that East Asians _aren't_ generally trying to achieve 'hyper' European noses, like the traditional 'Roman' or 'Greek' nose, with an angular nasal bridge or a hook. The noses people are going for in this surgeries aren't all that natural to Europeans either.
Pale skin has been prized across Asia since time immemorial as a sign of status. As far as I'm aware, there hasn't been a period in East Asian history where being pale _wasn't_ seen as attractive in women. If anything, East Asians prizing pale skin is a sign they _aren't_ just copying Western beauty ideals, given the Western emphasis on tanning.

Thank you for this video. I am half Korean and I saw and experienced a lot of pressure to look more white growing up. My best friend (also Korean) had her mom say something similar about her needing to do eyelid surgery and offering her it as a birthday gift in her teens. Luckily she turned it down but it hurt her very much to be told she would be more successful if she was prettier by changing the eyes she was born with.
I've a friend who worked as an English teacher in Korea for a few years. She taught in senior high school. She said that during the 1st day of the new schoolyear, lots of girls would be coming to class in sunglasses. That's because those girls just had double eyelid surgery. It's gifted by their parents. They usually do it during the last year of senior high, so that when they apply for/ enter university, they are "prettier". Sad fact...

It sticks with you differently when you are told you aren't pretty from family members. I would be made fun of at school and that I could always get over. But when your own father is introducing the kids at a cookout and introduces your older sister as "the pretty one" right infront of you, as young child it sticks for life.

I grew up insecure because I always got made fun for having mono lids, small eyes, wide nose-bridge, short, and dark tan skin basically none of my features fit asian standards even for SEA, but then got harassed because I got curves earlier than most of my peers. There's no where in between I either harassed for my features or harassed for having curves early. I'm from Thailand btw.
Then I moved to the US. Mind u, I came to the US when I was 6th grade, and my perspective changed. I saw people curvier than me and darker than me walking around the hallways without harassment. I was like 🤯 then I learned to accepted my features one by one, of course it took some times. Fast-forward to present time, puberty hit me, and I adore most of my features now lol. All I gotta say is wait until you are at least 20 before getting anything done because your body is still developing and not at it's full potential. Of course, none of my features are up to any standards, but I'm not mad about them anymore.
THANK YOU for addressing this and taking a stand on this. It has become so commonplace that people rarely question it, and the perception of what the physical attributes of Asians actually are have been skewed towards appearances-in nose shape, eye shape, and skin color in particular-altered by plastic surgery.

I'm a huge fan of monolids and dark skin, I also appreciate a diversity of looks and It hurts to hear that people want to change their looks severely to be accepted or look "better". I hate any beauty standards as people get mad at chasing them and ruin their natural beauty.
I'm not against plastic surgeries but not for the sake of "fitting in".

Imo Asian people have such beautiful, unique features, especially their eyes. I feel sad that they want to look "white"
I don't think asians want double eyelids to look white... double eyelids make the eyes to appear more prominent and give the illusion of them being bigger and so you end up looking more alert and awake.

Thank you for pointing out that ALL races, ALL ethnicities are BEAUTIFUL! I happen to be primarily Italian (European/Caucasian), but ever since I was young, around 12, my grandparents spent quite a bit of time in Japan and China. The pictures and souvenirs they brought back were full of GORGEOUS people and a TRULY BEAUTIFUL culture. And it makes NO sense to me that we want to incorporate their knowledge and style, but not their appearance, into Westen society! So, please, if you want cosmetic surgery, do it for yourself, just as Dr Youn says!
Im an Asian female who was born with monolids and eventually lost it. I really miss it, because it made my face look gentler and calmer. Your face has certain features for a reason and it creates who you are to the world. To give a part of it up feels a bit like negating your ancestors and your past.

Wow! Dr Youn, I have seen you here and there on CZcams. But I have to say that I am a fan of yours from now on because of this video. Your perspective on this topic is SO refreshing!
I have long wondered about why double eyelids, sharp, high-bridged noses and extremely fair skin color are so coveted in the far East. Fairly frequently I see others posting that the light skin is because hundreds of years ago poor, uneducated peasants worked outdoors, while the educated "higher class" people stayed inside. --- The problem is that it does not explain wanting to have round eyes and a pointy nose, and a few other Eurocentric things.
It seems that many of the most celebrated entertainers in China, for example, who are sopposedly considered to be the epitome of beauty basically look like White people with very slightly (actually, practically no) Asian features. Yes, I know it is not just China. This is only my perception from watching dramas from Asia. Admittedly, this is very far from a scientic observation. Of the ones that I watch, it seems a bit rare that the leading actors who are considered attractive will have markedly Asian features.
To me, this is very similiar to how some Black people covet the same beauty standards - again, based on White people. And that is sad to me. Beauty comes in so many forms. Besides - none of the stuff on the outside is gonna last forever.
BTW - no, I am NOT anti-White people. That would be silly. But I am very much for appreciating beauty in the many forms that it takes. Ironically (considering current beauty tends), I have always considered mono-lids to be very lovely.

As a Filipina, I am content and happy with my nose, skin, and body. And my concern now is how I can take care of it all, without plastic surgery. Thank you Dr Youn for your sound principles in practicing your profession.
As a southeast asian I’ve always felt inferior when it came to my looks ever since i was a kid. It started with relatives helping me to lighten my skin and now I’m a young adult and i can say it has progressed to thoughts about reconstructing my face. Although i can’t say with certainty that these thoughts have vanished, i try my best not to pay attention to them because i know I’m only falling pressure to the societal pressure for Asians to look a certain way. I’m tan and have a flat nose and I’ve always hated it but I’ve come to terms with them because they’re MY features and speak for my heritage.

I never thought much about the eyelids, growing up is SE Michigan was pretty diverse, until I lived with an Hmong woman. She naturally has a crease and she said Japanese women always ask where she got her eyes done (We met working at a Japanese company). I know in the US we didn't get very diverse media, but I'm glad there's more of a movement to embrace the differences. I also know I am a spectacle when I went to Japan to work being fair skinned, blue eyed, light hair, broad built, and tall; I find these attributes boring, but I literally stand out.

When teaching in LA and Ventura Counties, in California, my students were extremely varied. It was the ASIAN children who never bothered their neighbors, and usually got the highest scores-Caucasians and Mexicans were usually too busy arguing to actually LEARN from their homework and classroom teachings! Sorry, that's the truth!
SO...Dr. Youn's QUESTION, should actually be, " Are THEY going to far ?" Dr. Young doesn't seem to be ONE of them-at least not now; and GENERALIZING that Asian women who don't have the "Western Eye Cosmetic Surgery" aren't beautiful, is absolutely STUPID. GOOD ONE DR. YOUN! Beauty being mostly in the "eyes of the beholder" is a concept that REALLY needs the "sculpting." Those who believe the "beauty" is located only in their BODIES, can use a few psychology courses on self esteme way before they consider "plastic surgery!"
