      Sir, the way you explain the stuff is just perfect... i love the last tip with the circuit of the reverb, almost organ-like!
      look, one question though:
      Is there anything you can do „wrong“ with the patching? Can i harm the granny by doing a „wrong“ patch?
      i‘m going to get one of these babies cause i just cant resist anymore 😅

    When they debuted this synth, I thought that Moog had done something gimmicky in adding a spring reverb tank. Then I played one at Moogfest last year. Nope. It's an integral part of the sonic nature of the Grandmother. Such a fun playground. You bring the best out of it. Thanks.

    • @NuisanceMan
      @NuisanceMan Před rokem +1

      Do you have any thoughts as to why they put a delay but not a reverb into the Matriarch? It seems a bit odd, since otherwise the Matriarch is much more powerful. Yes, from what I've gathered there are a few other things the Grandmother can do and not the Matriarch, but they sound relatively minor.

    • @strangersun7721
      @strangersun7721 Před rokem +1

      @@NuisanceMan Matthew here from another account: I'm now very lucky and happy to own both the Grandmother and Matriarch. I think they did it just to differentiate the synths a bit. The Matriarch signal path is different with all the stereo options, but I'd guess that putting the spring reverb tank in there would have made them too similar. I can't say I miss it on the Matriarch, but it would be nice to have.

Now I’m thinking to send it out to my Behringer model D and apply attenuated LFO for a bit of of tremelo on just the reverb and then send back in like you did here. Or even shape it with the Behringer ENV should yield interesting results. And to think I laughed at the spring reverb as a gimmick when I first heard about it!

    It’s cool that you show how but as a newb to patching synths, I don’t see why you’d want to. Very few of these sounded at all useful and several sounded the same so I don’t get why you’d want to go to the trouble. I guess I’ll have to play with it.

  • @trizvanov
    @trizvanov Před 5 lety +2

    I wonder if it is possible to get the output into a Small Stone and back into the synth to get the reverb on top of that?

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  Před 5 lety

      Thanks! Good question. In theory you could just patch it in between the filter and the VCA, that way it will be processed by the reverb. But you'd have to convert the 1/8" to 1/4" and back. I'm also not too sure how the levels will work, because the level from the filter output will be hot (it's before the amp) so I'm not sure if that would overload the pedal. Maybe I'll try that with the phaser moogerfooger one day and hope that nothing blows up 🤞

    • @trizvanov
      @trizvanov Před 5 lety

      Good point that! Would the level be lower ( I could be completely off here ) if we get the signal out before it hits the filter ?

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  Před 5 lety

      it might actually be higher. Or rather, it's probably the same, but the filter will at least attenuate it slightly if partially closed. But actually I just remembered there's a mixer before all that (lol duh), so I think it should be fine cause you can control the level of the oscillators there. So yeah, adding the pedal anytime after the mixer should be ok.

  • @LaymensLament
    @LaymensLament Před 2 lety

    Maybe its obvious to most people watching this video but I would have liked a quick example or explanation why I would want to do (some of) these things (like parallel filtering) on this synth specifically. Maybe the Vibrato / Tremolo thing is clear but e.g. the split filter thing, I wouldn't know off the top of my head, what to do with it. Still, thank you for the great video!

    Stupid question: Are any of those path outputs actual audio output? Other than the actual audio outputs and the headphone output on the back of course. For example, could you run a cable from the oscillator output into a guitar pedal and then back into another input patch on the synth? Or are all of the patch outputs just voltage telling the synth what to do?

    Really interesting (albeit GAS inducing). Thanks! Would like to hear more of your thoughts as to "why?" for some of these tips. For instance, when you route the oscillators separately through the filters--one through low-pass and one through high-pass--what sort of sounds do you get that you wouldn't otherwise have available and how are they useful in a musical context? I guess I'm interested in some ideas about the philosophy of sound design as well as the nuts-and-bolts.

      First off I want to thank you for this video. And I am with you big eastern syndicate onyour questions. Among other Synths I ownI also have a GM which is pretty much on top on my list as my favorite Synth that I have. With that said I am no musician at all, can’t really play the keyboard very well either. So I also listen to this and other demonstrations on patching and like you I can appreciate all these different ways you can use and change the sounds.I have NFC how to use these different sounds creatively. I just don’t have the talent to figure out how I can use each different sound and make it sound decent in any sort of musical sense. I come to the same questions of just listening to a piece of music, I pick out little sounds here and there in a song and wonder how they figured out that sound and how to use it. It might just be a little bell sound, or some string sound, etc. and it really makes the music pleasurable. It’s just so frustrating not to have a musical gene in me. Anyway, again I really do appreciate tips like these, and even though I might never know what to do with these different ways of generating sound, at least I have more avenues to explore.

      Same thing here. Funny thing is that according to the signal flow diagram in the manual, everything that goes through the VCA has to go through the wet/dry mixer. So if that is on 100% wet, no dry signal can come through. So we cannot hear OSC1 and the Noise. Only OSC2 on an endless sustain. So our experiences match the flow diagram. So either he has another version of the machine, which is unlikely, or he does not have the Reverb fully open, although it does look like it on the video. Unsolved riddle. Please, Once Upon a Synth, help us out!

      I found the solution! Somehow we assumed that we should set the Reverb to fully open. This is not the case! The Reverb out on the back is always fully open. So if you keep the reverb closed everything works as demonstrated!

    Hey great tutorial, I just got my own Grandmother finally after ogling yours for so long. I love a lot of the tricks that get displayed here but the last one with the spring reverb is probably the coolest. When I try doing it on mine (patches all the same and drone definitely off) the second I go to plug oscillator 2 into the reverb-in patch, it starts to drone which kind of ruins the whole effect. Wondering if I'm the only one who's had this problem and if anyone had any idea of what I was doing wrong. I keep going over everything and I'm coming up empty

      Hi, just stumbled over the same problem. :D Just turn the reverb knob to the left (very contra intuitive). The signal is kinda weak, but you get the result from the vid! (That wasn't my solution, found it on Reddit)

    can any of these patches that you create be saved or is everything lost after you've spent so much time just trying to create a cool sound?

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  Před 5 lety +1

      There are no preset saving on the GM, so you have to remake it every time.

    When i try the reverb patch, the notes are sustained all the time. Does anybody knows why?

  • @maddmannmatt
    @maddmannmatt Před 4 lety

    I followed you along on this with my GM and I got very different results. For instance the last tip where you patch the WAVE OUT from OSC2 to the REVERB IN, the OSC continues to sound even if I am not keying in a note. All other settings are identical to what you have on your GM. Trust me, I checked several times. Is anyone else having variances in the results of these patch suggestions?

      @maddmannmatt Před 4 lety

      @@driesferiani Well, it helps to NOT have the drone on...derp. But still, I ended up updating the firmware regardless due to some later discoveries. I had some issues with it not recording sequences. A bit unsettling having the up the FW having only owned a Moog for a few days. I haven't gone back thru this vid to see if that helped but if I do and it did, I will DM you the result
