John Carpenter has said that Mac was a helicopter pilot in vietnam, and had developed his drinking habit after he returned.
That part confused me too, since it is both alluded to, and can be inferred from things, in the movie.
I love how this ending is ambiguous like the movie. On one hand when dying of hypothermia a person is covered in a warm 'sleepy' like feeling as they die. On the other hand he might have finally become The Thing.

EclecticMage S well first off there's many flaws in the comic book and second the whole story is bogus because child's was confirmed the thing by both John and kurt Russell. And this story throws that out the window. It was confirmed sometime in the past few years. Don't know when this comic was made though. I do applaud you though for making the video and reading for everyone.

madx43 John made a tweet saying so that one was a thing and kurt said on a red carpet quick question that his character knew child's was infected. Just google it because I cant share links because of CZcams spam rules.

I do have one problem with this story, and it has to do with Childs- at the start of the story it’s explained that after Childs brought Macready aboard the whaling ship that he went back for survivors. Now we know that, according to this story, that Childs wasn’t infected. My issue is this, since he wasn’t infected, he would’ve known that there were no survivors back at the station, so why the hell did he go back?
To burn the remaining bodies, it was mentioned in the last 2 chapters

Well he couldn't exactly say he was going to burn the bodies of his dead friends now could he, look what those Seals did to Mac or even what they did to Lars.
Macready & Childs were totally bad assed. They should adapt this to a film while there is still time...
the actors are pretty old now.

As for Macready being called lieutenant, and the implication that he’d served due to his knowledge of the call sign, I’m pretty sure I’ve read/seen something about his back story including him being a pilot in Vietnam during the war.
I love the aspect of these blood tests....it adds so much more suspense

The southern ocean, which surrounds Antarctica is abundant with life, including many species of whales, and averages anywhere from 28-50 F. The water is much warmer than the land. All The Thing has to do is make it to the tip of South America, New Zealand or Australia and humanity is doomed.

Nope, there is a sequel to this. It did survive, but it didn't spread. The second one is the best out the trilogy.

I like how they brought the thing right into their base multiple times.
The whole submarine sequence went by too quickly, it was clearly underdeveloped. It could have been the most thrilling part of the whole story, and it went by like a flash.
John Carpenter himself mentioned this sequence when he was interviewed several years ago about the Comic Book
It took me years to figure out that The Thing, is just a giant living scab.

Cool upload. But isn't it implied that Child's is infected at the end of the movie when he drinks from the flask with gasoline in it and doesn't react?
Its one of the most controversial endings I have to admit. Even the cast and director disagree as to what the ending implied. In an interview Kurt Russel had stated he believed that childs wasnt infected at the end and was drinking alcohol not gasoline. While Carpenter revealed his intentions were to make it look like Childs was infected, admitting that he did not do a good job of confirming it either way. I on the other hand believe that its endings ambiguity is what makes it memorable.
the bottle was a regular bottle of wine as in the original script they would go to the 'bar' that had somehow been untouched by the explosions- the hydrogen tank being detonated with explosives to kill the creature- Mac and Childs would get a board and start playing, Mac having a flame thrower under the table
so it's likely just wine- this is implied in the movie as everyone who drinks is not a thing, mac being a example
as soon as some stuff happens Palmer stops smocking, Norris' heart would probably not be happy about drinking and Blair never drinks.
Alcohol kills bacteria and the thing would likely get drunk quicker or have some other effect as it absorbs things, not completely digest through a full extent such as a normal person.
Norris is also the last to be infected
we see the green stuff constantly through the movie- even the dog has it, the dog, only being found and threatened does it start to make this, it's so big that this isn't seen, only small patches of it is seen around where the arms erupt through the body- meaning a faster growth than a calm slow growth we see with the dog, but like the dog, norris also starts to break apart, the dog is a large biomass made of partly assimilated material, when norris is down on the table and shocked we see him break apart but most of his body remains unmoving and a unformed mass of organs and alien body parts erupt out while his head tears itself off- this can imply that he was the closest
the thing is also a social animal it seems- or at least seems to mimic one, we see Palmer and Norris side by side nearly constantly after the blood sabotage, both around Fuchs who was the next to die and burn himself before the thing would get to him
Blair would be stealing parts for the ship while palmer and norris sabotaged the rest of the people
we see palmer and norris sabotage the group's efforts early- having them turn on the person in charge- the person keeping them clam and organized and in this tight and organized state the thing could not continue to spread- it's patience is not unlimited
Fascinating, I never noticed the point about the bottle. I thought the ending was supposed to suggest either was infected. I need to watch the movie again.
Wasnt it when they were sitting together outside, you could see MacReady’s breath from the cold, but not Childs?
Im not sure if your aware but theres a PC game of the thing. Its very dated but its actually not too bad. It follows aspects of the original movie too. Check it out.
Was Mccredy one of the things all along?! In the end only he survived drowning when no one else could and in the end when he faced extreme cold he went to sleep, just like the thing goes into hibernation when it faces extreme cold?!

And thus, Child's unwittingly lets the invader live to kill everyone another day.

At 10:13 McCredy right hand holding the ice is transforming.
Plus in the beginning McCredy wanted to die to avoid the Thing spreading.
At the end he didnt want to die and went into hibernation to avoid it.
That was great would have made of cool movie.

Favorite thriller/horror film ever... well running close with Alien anyway.
They hinted to Macready being former military in the movie to when u see his torn clothes that our outside(the ones that the thing tried to use to set him up) you will notice that jacket with his name on it was a standard issue olive drab uniform same with his personality and his action are very military minded
I like this story, but I wish there was a way to recreate the claustrophobic feeling from the original film using comics. The location changes so quickly with these that I think it would be hard to make a movie out of.

It's almost like The Thing takes place in the Halo universe and this is just first contact with The Flood. Literally the exact same as The Flood in almost every way.

I really don't like how The Thing is seen as a combat monster here, it completely goes against its behavior in the movie
But this is the comics but probably in the movie child's was the thing or mccready was. but maybe this was part of the movie, but they did it as a comic instead, if so I'm glad I really wanted to know what happened.
Here’s a thought it was only one ship that the alien came in from which means an entire hell of these creatures exist somewhere out in their universe which is fucked up

Hey Effen Stein! Yes I grabbed a copy last week, but havent had the time to read it. Will let you know what I think, when I get the chance!!
I know a lot of people have a theory Childs is the thing but many of those pieces of evidence can be debunked. Also Childs has a gold tooth and gold earring. The thing can’t mimic non organic materials. His breath can be seen on screen, it’s just not as notable. His clothes are the same, they are just covered in frost. There is no reason to believe the thing doesn’t have a sense of taste, it can replicate cells and presumably taste buds. The bottles that had fuel in them were blown up in the Blair explosion.
I don’t think anyone making the film at the time knew if someone was the thing. Ambiguity was more dramatic. Over the years I think maybe they have put their own ideas on to it. It makes sense if they were both human or if Mac was and I would say if Childs was too, but I cannot get past the tooth.

As F'd up as it may be, Childs had the best idea, he was looking at the overall pic. You HAVE to get this thing, even if it means sacrificing yourself and or others. It was spreading already.
