At Arsenal vs Olypiacos I was "sitting" at the clock end. We were chanting our lungs out despite the disappointing result. The stewards threatened to kick us out if we didn't sit down. Disgraceful in my opinion.

One of the grounds no longer exists, which was the old Rotherham ground, so I am guessing that there will be more leg room at the new one. The other was Cheltenham Town, where if you are taller than 5ft 6ins I would advise you not to sit in the main stand...as you would be in for a very uncomfortable 90 minutes.

The atmosphere as away fans is just amazing. Cant beat it but heard about it being absolute rubbish at Emirates which Im sad about. But I can say as a Glasgow Rangers fan the atmosphere In Ibrox our home stadium is phenomenal. But we need some standing seats for the blue order and such. The stadium is great otherwise. Where as at the stadium of light and St James park we stand throughout the game dont use the seats! Its very slippy and steep though. Safe standing is a great option. +AIDEN_js Completely agree. I go to every Rotherham United game and where I sit (Or should i say stand) everyone in that section stands for the whole 90 minutes, and It creates a great atmosphere for everyone in that section and encourages other fans to stand up. As mentioned, I'm pretty sure 90% of championship clubs have these sections that stand, so why not simply put in safe standing, not only is it safe so you can't fall over (At New York Stadium, the home of Rotherham united it's definitely not safe to stand, because the angle of the Kop stand is very steep indeed) it also gives you something to lean on if your legs/back gets tired.

The reason there is no standing areas in BPL is thanks to the clubs being run by corporate interests. With seats only, you attract a different kind of crowd which in most cases have fatter wallets. And they're still selling out their grounds. Until there is a moneymaking prospect in the introducing of safe stands, it probably wont happen. The exception would probably be if the FA stepped in and regulated a minimum amount of stands (scaling to the capacity of each clubs stadium), but that's not likely either.
    However, excellent video!

I completely agree. Although I haven't had the opportunity to actually go to Emirates Stadium, watching an Arsenal game, even behind a television, I can feel how dull and inspirited the fans are. And the one thing I love watching during any football match is the crowd. It gives me goosebumps to watch everyone go absolutely mental when a goal is scored or when even a goal down, the fans chant their hearts out. I see this all the time in any bundesliga game but unfortunately, never in the BPL. If I do get to see the Arsenal at the Emirates, the number one thing on my bucket list, I want to be able to sing, move, and just really get behind the team.

Until the late 90s there were benches, then we had like those British all-seated stands but some of the seats were broken because we standed on top of them singing, jumping and supporitng for 90 minutes. It's even better than Hannover now because it's more spacious as the fans told their opinion, you can check it. Yeah, we can't play in Europe like that but we're in third division now.... The cost of implicating safe standing is a drop in the ocean, especially with the new £5 billion TV deal. Clubs could easily facilitate this and its obvious the atmosphere at games would improve.
Imagine the Stretford End and the Kop end two of the most famous terrace stands in Europe all being made all standing with everyone singing and getting into the game. The league needs this.

I defiantly think this is a boss idea because firstly it will separate real fans from the plastic fans, because it will show who's passionate about there to support there team week in and week out and then there's the fans who are just there for a day out. Also for clubs such as Liverpool (my club) it will make the atmosphere great again which will get behind the team and encourage the team to play not just for the shirt but for the fans.

This morning I was completely against it, but the more I think about it the more I begin to be in faour. I am unable to go to games for my club (due to my age and limited resources) but I am going to see Liverpool play Bilbao in the Aviva in Dublin, but I cant really imagine the atmosphere being as good as some GAA matches I have been to because, singing, cheering and having fun isnt really possible from sitting down. This system takes into account almost all of the old faults with standing and deals with them while also including the seated element.
Like I said I was firmly against it this morning, but now I am struggling to see any reason why we should not have it.

james brown How do you come to that conclusion? In countries with actual fans, it's usually the dedicated supporters that stand, even ultras if your team has them. Most ultras are at least 15, so that's not an issue. Not our fault that kids are standing in the midst of adults. That's their fault, they chose to be there. Maybe they can just stand in the front row?

I am an Oxford supporter and stand in the east stand, i always get my ticket in the top row and behind this is a walkway/path. I was standing there for around 10seconds with my mate before a steward forced us to sit in our seats even though it was 30mins before ko he stood behind us and walked behind us so we couldn't carry on standing there. My other mate told me he was threatened to be kicked out if he didn't go back to his seat even though he was just getting a flag even though he's aloud.#legalize safestanding

This is what football should be about enjoying the game and embracing it. My local club Doncaster Rovers used to have a stadium called Belle Vue where seating was pretty much irrelevant. The club moved at the start of 2007 into an all seated stadium just before they went up into the championship. Since then our club atmosphere has died and there are hardly any supporters going to games. As nice as the new stadium is it has never had the same atmosphere as the old ground. The Germans have enhanced bundesliga clubs atmosphere and Celtic are the first Scottish club to give it a chance. Hope it does come into the English game once again.

What I don't understand is why some people have a problem with the idea. It was about 3 years ago now that we realised Hillsborough was cause by the police not doing their job properly as opposed to fans standing up, I support Carlisle and go in the standing section every week but my safety is not affected because we are not shoved into little pens filled with double the amount of people it can fit. Good luck to teams in higher leagues getting safe standing.

One thing that I don't understand though is why you need a safe standing? It's definitely a step in the right direction but I don't see why you can't go all out and make it "full standing sections" or whatever you wanna call it. Here in Sweden along with a lot of other European countries standing sections is a part of the culture. Always has, always will be. The tragic Hillsborough disaster did not happen because of the standing section. It happened because of poor managing from the police and the outrageous fences in front of the section. It looked like a prison!
If the police can manage the sport events better (which I'm sure they can) and the supporters are treated better there should be no problem with standing sections.
